5.0 out of 5 stars Made me laugh when as a little girl and makes me laugh now!
When I was a little girl, my dad played this on the record player. It was hilarious to me then and whenever I thought of it, I laughed! Today, the record probably lives in the attic of my parents house--and they no longer have a record player. Now that I am 50 years old, it has become a classic. I am enjoying sharing it with my family and friends who agree that it is of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not enough . . .
With all due respect to Andy Griffith as a storyteller, there are a couple of problems with this CD. First of all, it lacks the "No Time for Sergeants" song found on the old LP version. Next, the mix of the stories with the musical performances lacks a clear direction. Finally, the material is almost exactly duplicated on the AMERICAN ORIGINALS album. Capitol...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disapointing, April 18 2004

I do not understand why it is called "What It Was, Was Football (Part 1 and 2). This does not have all of the origial version, so how can it be Part 1 and 2? I should have listened to it first and I sure would not have purchased it. Live and learn.

Next, the mix of the stories with the musical performances lacks a clear direction. Finally, the material is almost exactly duplicated on the AMERICAN ORIGINALS album. Capitol would be doing fans a favor by combining the two albums and including "No Time for Sergeants"--they would all fit on one disc, and savvy justaposition of tracks would make an entertaining hour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, it wasn't terrible or anything..., May 28 2002

...but it wasn't that funny, either. And we know funny!! :-)
Got this for a road trip, we'd been hootin' and hollerin' at the Jerry Clower, Lewis Grizzard and "Blue Collar Tour" CDs, but we just took this one out early, nary a hoot nor a holler. Nothing against ol' Andy..........

5.0 out of 5 stars Funniest Thing I have heard, Jan 25 2002

I have the cassette version and I laugh so hard about the football story and Romeo & Juliet. I almost have the Football story dialogue memorized. This aspect of his career and Red Skelton's Gertrude & Heathcliff (the seagulls) are my absolute old time favorites. Both of them funny without being gross. My other favorite comedians are Bill Engvall and Jeff Foxworthy. I am putting the CD version on my wish list because I have a cassette version made for me, but my current vehicle only has a CD player. I used to have the original 45 & album (remember those?) but somehow in all the moves and a teenage daughter appropriating my record collection, my original records got lost. (Now I find that they are both quite valuable)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hoot!, Dec 1 2001

I teach Romeo and Juliet to 9th graders and when I saw this album, I bought it so my classes could see the story from a different perspective. Wow, was it different, and better yet, the students loved it. The entire CD is riotous.

This is one heck of a CD. Great for car trips and the like--I can listen to this over and over, and I just never get tired of hearing it. Buy this for Mayberry fans as well as for the uninitiated--this is stuff that pre-dates the classic TV series, but it recalls the gentle humor that was its hallmark. Great, great stuff, and for the whole family!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the funniest CD's I have ever listened to., Jun 15 2000

Andy Griffith is my favorite comedian of all time. If you love to hear funny stories. Listen to the very first one where he talks about going to a football game he thinks everybody is out there kicking a pumpkin. And playing this funny game out on a cow pasture instead of a football field. Then at the end he says "the only way to win this game is to get from one end of the cow pasture to the other with that pumpkin without getting knocked down or stepping in something."

5.0 out of 5 stars Drove me off the road, Dec 27 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Wit & Wisdom of Andy Griffith (Audio CD)
I hadn't heard this since I was but a youth and I wasn't ready to hear it when a local station played What It Was, Was Football on the radio while I tried to drive across Seattle in a rental car. If the essential element of comedy is truth, then Andy Griffith made one for the ages when he wrote this sketch. The Simple Soul trying to understand a game such as football and unashamedly relaying his thoughts is as pure and funny a story as I have ever heard... I wish he was still doing this kind of comedy today... I did actually manage to stay on the road...Barely.
