Not Perfect, But Fairly Close I Think!,
By Sunnyside "Sunnyside" (Astoria, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Singin' in the Rain (1952 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Well, I wish they had "left in" the tapping feet, but otherwise, this album is the original soundtrack all right! I especially liked it that different versions of some songs were used ("Would You", "All I Do Is Dream of You", "Beautiful Girl", etc.), some only slightly different and others fairly radically. Too bad lyrics weren't included in the booklet! If I may be picky, I would have also liked it more were the photos in color. Otherwise, I can't think of anything else to say other than that if the movie's touched your heart, then this CD ought to do the same!

Disappointed,
By A Customer
This review is from: Singin' in the Rain (1952 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
One of the other reviewers mentioned that the dialogue, tapping, applause, etc. included in previous releases of this soundtrack were annoying. I must disagree. I believe that THIS release, especially without the tap, is both annoying and boring. The dialogue and tapping are parts of the songs for me...part of the rhythm. Without them, the songs lose their spark. Even my 4-year old son noticed the absence of the dialogue and tapping. I was highly disappointed with this CD and now I'm frustrated because I cannot find a CD version to replace the old, worn out (though still wonderful) cassette we have been listening to.

What a Glorious Feeling...,
This review is from: Singin' in the Rain (1952 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Perhaps one of my favorite movies, Singin' in the Rain is both a crowd-pleaser and a cinematographic achievement (it was named one of the top ten movies of all time by the American Film Institue). This soundtrack does justice to the movie, and more. It contains the score of the original movie as well as the vocal pieces (favorites include "You Were Meant For Me," "Good Morning," and, of course "Singin in the Rain"); however, it also includes extended versions and outtakes as well as supplemental material. If you have seen the movie, you will not be displeased with the way the soundtrack recreates the movie. You can almost see handsome Don Lockwood and Cosmo Brown tapping and joking at the diction coach's office, or Kathy and Don dancing across the empty soundstage. After all, the movie almost IS the music. If you have not seen the movie, never fear- the CD insert is a booklet that includes a synopsis of the film. Overall, an excellent (and digitally remastered!) buy. Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds are a trio that's sure to please.

No taps - Thank goodness,

There's nothing more annoying than a soundtrack that includes dialogue, tapping, and other foley tracks from a film. In the late 80's and early 90's some MGM films received soundtrack releases which were taken from the actual film elements. They were some of the most disappointing purchases I have ever made. Dialogue, tapping, footsteps, crowd noises, applause....if I want all of that I'll make a tape from my videotapes! Thank you Turner and Rhino for finally doing justice to the legacy of the MGM film. You'll find no extraneous noises here, and many of the songs have been remixed from the original multi-miked recordings to true stereo. A highlight of the disc is Debbie Reynolds' original vocals on "Would You?" (some of her vocals were done by Betty Noyes.) Add this one to your collection and then go out and get ALL of the Turner/Rhino MGM soundtracks. There's not a dud among them.

If You Loved the Movie, You'll Love the Soundtrack, Too!,
This review is from: Singin' in the Rain (1952 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
In my opinion, three characteristics make a great soundtrack. First, you have to have good songs to start with. Second, the soundtrack has to capture the essence of the movie. In other words, you can listen to a song and know exactly what was going on in the movie when that song was playing. Third, listening to the soundtrack should make you want to watch the movie again. The Singin' in the Rain soundtrack has all of these characteristics. If you doubt how good the songs from Singin' in the Rain are, then, you have not watched the movie enough. Unlike many soundtracks, the Singin' in the Rain soundtrack has ALL of the songs from the movie on it. Plus, it has outtakes and supplemental songs as well. As you listen to each song, you can recall the exact dance steps that were being performed during that particular part of the song. Also, as you listen to "Would You," you can't help but think of Lina trying to sing it and missing the beat. Listening to the soundtrack can't help but make you want to watch the movie again. One of the main reasons I purchased the soundtrack was that I do not have the time to watch the movie as much as I would like. Because the soundtrack does indeed capture the essence of the movie, listening to it is ALMOST like watching the movie. Plus, when listening to the soundtrack, you can TRY to do the dance steps from the movie (Not that I can, but it is fun to try.). The only bad aspect about the soundtrack is some static that is present on a few songs. It is very negligible, though. With the CD is a 28-page book that has a lot of interesting information in it. Most notable is a note from the authors, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, that tells the story behind Singin' in the Rain. This is the best CD and soundtrack I have purchased in a long time!

A Treat To Those Who Love Movie Musicals,
By "malgen" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Singin' in the Rain (1952 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Those who love the movie will definitely love the soundtrack. As a child, I loved watching the movie play on The Family Film Festival and the soundtrack wonderfully recaptures the charm and comedy of the movie itself. The music is so catchy that you soon forget that the sound does not have the stereo sound that people are so used to hearing today. Everyone knows "Singin' in the Rain" but there are other songs on this album that make it a worthy buy such as "Fit as a Fiddle" and "You Are My Lucky Star." The bonus tracks also include Debbie Reynold's version of "You Are My Lucky Star" which you don't get to hear in the movie. If you love movie musicals, especially those from MGM, this is one you can't miss having.

Smashing,what?,
This review is from: Singin' in the Rain (1952 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
The soundtrack from the movie that helped define an entire genre is JUST AS good as the movie itself.Songs like the title number,"Good Morning" and "Moses" are delightful and melodious, more so if you've watched the movie! An added bonus - several outtakes and a Debbie Reynolds version of "Would You?" , plus a very informative booklet to boot. One drawback however is the tinny quality of recordings, but if you've seen "Singing In The Rain" and loved it, this one is a must buy !

The best soundtrack there ever was,
This review is from: Singin' in the Rain (1952 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Yes, some complain about the static-ey quality of the sound in this album. But it's only in a few songs, and trust me, it only adds to the charm. The film was made half a century ago, afterall! It is, all in all, a lovely, dreamy recording. O'Connor and Reynolds provide great support--their numbers are sweet, funny, and quirky. But Gene Kelly takes the prize--his wonderful, mellow voice could melt a stone.
