About Flim,
By Pithy Commentz (CT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Come to Daddy (Audio CD)
If any of you cats got the vinyl of Come To Daddy, put song 02- Flim on slower speed (which on a normally 45 speed LP would be 33rpm), I swear it sounds so much better. It's almost as if RDJ intended it to be that way but released it faster to trick his fans. The rest of the (cd) album is great, the cd has more songs, some of the best songs. Mummy remix is terrific, Contour Regard fantastic, Iz-Us compelling.

This guy just scares the crap outta me. Listen to "Come To Daddy (Pappy Mix)" in the dark at 1:49 AM with headphones after (enter chemical amusement aid here) like I'm doing right now and tell me Richard is not one disturbed man. Brilliant, but what a nut job. Excellent beats, interesting melodies, twisted, disturbing, funny. Great EP. I think the cover tells you best what to expect inside, yowch.

Aphex Twin - "Come To Daddy EP",

This review is from: Come to Daddy (Audio CD)
This is my first Aphex Twin album and I just bought it about 1.5 hours ago. And since it's an 8-track EP, i've already heard the whole thing. For the past few years, I have been strongly into rap music, listening to artists such as Ludacris, Eminem, 50 Cent, etc. Then someone I know introduced me to artists such as Mum (Iceland), Boards of Canada, Prodigy, The Crystal Method, etc. So I decided to try Aphex Twin...and I am very pleased with this album. I'm going to go through each track and tell you what I rate them.01. Come To Daddy, Pappy mix (4:23) 02. Flim (2:57) 03. Come To Daddy, Little Lord Faulteroy mix (3:48) 04. Bucephalus Bouncing Ball (5:45) 05. To Cure A Weakling Child, Contour Regard (5:10) 06. Funny Little Man (3:55) 07. Come To Daddy, Mummy mix (4:24) 08. IZ-US (3:03) I am very pleased with my first Aphex Twin album and it motivates me to look into buying some of Richard D James' other albums like, "I Care Because You Do", "Richard D James Album", "Selected Ambient Works, Volume II", etc.

He's created a monster!,
This review is from: Come to Daddy (Audio CD)
The infamous poster-child of Aphex Twin's fame (Come To Daddy - Pappy Mix)is best experienced with its companion music video. In this stunning audio-visual sequence we see a demonic face twist and morph inside a TV set while scores of its hideous juvenile worshippers embark on an urban rampage. The first track is, without a doubt, the best of RDJ's work and possibly in all of techno, and the entire cd (though short) is worth buying for this alone. One of RDJ's better albums, fusing extremist drum-and-bass elements without completely losing structure. By far, this is his greatest attempt to bridge the gap between his more intensely chaotic styles with metronome-centered fluidity. Beautifully disturbing!!!!

A decent starting point....,
This review is from: Come to Daddy (Audio CD)
Partly because of it's 8-song length, and partly because of the music that Richard James puts on this EP, it serves as an excellent starting point to those who are familiar perhaps with 'Windowlicker' or 'Come to Daddy', and curious about the rest of Aphex Twin's music.....it's not a masterpiece, it's just a good record that happens to be made simply with electronic music, and covers a wide range of emotional terrainCome to Daddy(Pappy Mix), remains one of the scariest, most intense songs of the 90's. Considering James's output since, it seems to be his final statement on drum n' bass...not a song to listen to alone, late at night if you're easily disturbed... Flim and IZ-US, the closing track on the album, are both short, simple pieces of music built around shimmering melodies that fade away just when you become accustomed to them. Bucephalus Bouncing Ball and To Cure a Weakling Child (Contour Regard) are songs I find somewhat less enjoyable, though they are interesting to listen to from a rhythmic standpoint, especially Bucephalus, which sounds like being trapped in a rubber room with tennis balls on crack...... the other two 'mixes' of Come to Daddy are completely different songs, with the mummy mix evoking a certain level of uncertainty and tension...it's driving, but also low-key--not matching the intensity of the opening track. the Little Lord Fauntelroy mix is my favorite track on the album--a truly bizarre melody with dueling, distorted sample vocals that floats along, somewhere between nostalgia and nightmare. and Funny Little Man is for my money, either a quick joke, or the most disturbing song on the CD, depending on how you look at it.. this EP is actually longer than some full-length CDs, and contains a decent mix of music---if there's nothing here that makes you want to try more Aphex Twin, then you're probably not a fan of what he does.

I must say the cover of this EP is what hooked me into buying it, however, I was a little disappointed with the cover song. Both of the remixes were much more interesting though. But the real reason to buy this EP is an incredible song called "Film" that just happend to slip it's way in. Film's simplistic light-hearted melody is pushed along by a cool, confident drum beat that makes for an incredible experience. If you're a fan of AFX get this EP for sure. But for me "Film" is worth the price. Anyone else want to see a Film EP??? I do!

good creativity music despite being scary and disturbing,

This review is from: Come to Daddy (Audio CD)
i found this music to be weird, scary disturbing but i guess that was the point of aphex twin with these songs.here are my favourite songs/tracks Come To Daddy (Pappy Mix) i remember seeing the video for this song(on a large screen tv with the sound up at 2am) and its probably the most scariest song i've ever seen or heard and definatly the scarierst thing i've ever seen on a tv screen, no movie or anything comes close to this, it was a horrific experience. The music starts off with this spooky guitar 3 notes playing while with the heavy drum and bass sound with this evil growling voice yelling "i want your soul,i will eat your soul, come to daddy" simular to that voice of that demon from the movie the "excorcist" but that wasn't even scary compared to this. I managed to watch the whole video untill near the end as i found the "middle" and "end screaming part" the most painfull and disturbing to watch and listen to. Its certainly not something that i would listen to too often or even while driving or before bed becuase of the nature of it but it deserves at least one listen or watch, though be warned because of the nature. this is a nice song with a nice melody that i can listen to anytime. Come To Daddy (Little Lord Faulteroy Mix) this song is my favourite, its not scary just a little creepy maybe but its listenable. It sounds like a 2-step hi-hop type beat with these voices(sometimes kids) singing or talking with this wierd melody or notes playing, i like this song becuase of its weirdness. It sort of makes me think of something from the x-files or walking through the haunted mansion at a theme park. Bucephalus Bouncing Ball this isn't a track i like much but its a great song to listen to for the beats and they are all made from sounds of bouncing balls, the song does get noisy especially the 2nd half but it is interesting. To Cure a Weakling Child (Contour Regard) this is another weird song but its also a little creepy a kid would be singing this but its really samples of kids singing put in a loop,"my feet,my arms!" e.c.t. Its a good song becuase of the beats and the song makes me think of a great song the kids from the adams family tv show would dance to or if you lived in the haunted mansion then your kids would dance to this music. Funny Little Man this is my least favourite track but i thought it was a joke just as the aphex twin song "milkman" comes to mind sounded when i first heard it, this would be a great song on a soundtrack for a weird comedy movie. Come To Daddy (Mummy Mix) this song sounds alot different from the other come to daddy remixes and its not scary at all. The song is just a bunch of beats and there is no melody or lyrics. Some people said this song was noisy?? well it is if you have the trebble on full with the volume up but otherwise its listenable. IZ-US this song is just as nice as "film" a really peacefull song that i really like listening to and is my 2nd favourite on this cd. well i hope i can help with this review, it is certainly an experience and i hope other can share it as i have.

Flim.,

Richard James is such a gifted craftsman in the game of electronica, weaving a diverse range of moods, rhythms, and sounds. The main attraction on this EP is the abrasive title track, which sounds like an unholy marriage between drum-and-bass and industrial. But the real standout is "Flim," one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Set to a frenzied beat with angelic synth touches and computerized strings, it really delivers a total sense of calm. The rest of the EP are remixes and non-album tracks, but they don't stand up to the surreal elegance of that amazing track. First time listeners should probably check out "I Care Because You Do" or "Richard D. James Album" first, but the cut "Flim" is almost worth the price of "Come to Daddy."

Some hits; some misses,

My first taste of electronic music was the nightmarish video for "Come to Daddy." Being more of a metal/hardcore fan, I identified with the heavy beat and thrashing vocals. However, in the intervening time, I have heard a great deal more of this genre, from insipid dance tunes to brilliant epics. A good deal of the latter is from Richard D. James. Unfortunately, the majority of this EP is rather annoying, repetitive filler. While the title track, with its almost free-form industrial drill n' bass sound, is certainly interesting, it is hardly indicitive of the greater Aphex Twin sound. The majority of AT's work is more subdued and "down-beat". In other words, if you want nonstop extreme, harsh beats, this is mostly not for you. Go listen to something on Alec Empire's Digital Hardcore label. While the rest of the songs are more in the traditional AT mode, they become boring after repeated listens. My advice is to download "Come to Daddy" and save your cash for the "Richard D. James Album" or "I Care Because You Do" CDs. This is for only the most hardcore completists.

Flim not only makes this cd but it makes Aphex Twin.,

This Ep would still be amazing if the only song on it was "Flim". Without words this song still does alot. It describes so many emotions, feelings, and memories of feeling infinate for me. I think another reviewer said this song reminds him of snowflakes and I couldn't agree more with him. I came to this site with the objective to explain how great this song is, and how much emotion is attached to it. But as of right now I know I haven't accomplished that goal so listen, love and tell friends about this song because this song makes you think twice about "Smells Like Teen Spirit" being the best song of the 90's.
