This review is from: Brahms: Late Piano Music incl. Handel Variations & Paganini Variations (Audio CD)
Three competent pianists share a fairly comprehensive review of Brahms' music for piano solo (except for his sonatas, ballads and a few odd pieces). Kovacevich's performance is the most convincing of the three: his fiery, sensitive and lyrical approach is a delight. The other two pianists hold their own too, although Harasiewicz is the better of the two (his version of the Paganini Variations is exceptionally good). At the price of two discs for one, this Phillips album is an excellent bargain, unless one is willing to buy Katchen's extraordinary 6 discs review of all of Brahms' solo piano music.
