5.0 out of 5 stars It Changed My Life.
This album is so good that, upon it's release, the sea of mediocre rappers in which the world yet swims convulsed in collective jealosy. It's so good that it sits next to my Black Sabbath and Dimitri Shostakovich CD's. Here is a man who stands above--far above--the rest of hip-hop. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great beats, rhythm, but those lyrics!
Excellent rating on the variety of sounds; good transitions and levels, but the nastiness of the lyrics ( and repetition) gets in the way of everything that's awesome about this CD.

Nastiness is fine, but how about some more subtle means of conveyance, a bit more creativity, instead of such 3rd grade level of communication about rectal regions and surgical...

This is original source material for those who revere music and creativity. This album will make you bob your head with it's sick beats, and keel over laughing at the inane, incomparable stream of absurdities from the mouth of the Most High Master, Kool Keith. Totally abstruse and esoteric, yet completely accessible, isn't that what great art is all about? A Dali painting on CD. People will have this in their collection 100 years from now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kool Keith's best, Jun 16 2004
This review is from: Dr. Octagonecologyst (Audio CD)
(In my opinion), since his early days with the Ultramagnetic MCs.

In this album (produced by Dan the Automator), Kool Keith plays the deranged Dr. Octagon.

This album is full of bizarre lyrics and is filled with electronic and unusual beats.
A crazy album from a crazy MC (who has spent time in a mental asylum) -- makes sense

There are several great tracks to listen to on this album such as:"3000", "Blue Flowers", "Bear Witness" 1 (1st of several by Dan the Automator and Prince Paul), and "I'm Destructive".
And there are entertaining and perverse skits throughout the album.

There are also musical contributions by: Prince Paul, DJ Shadow, and DJ Qbert.

If you like Kool Keith or unusual and innovative hiphop this is a good album.

Considered a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars kool keith is a little off, Jun 4 2004

This review is from: Dr. Octagonecologyst (Audio CD)
First of all I'll talk about kool keith. he repeats his one line refrains in unpredictable rhythms, and, for that matter, does almost everything in unpredictable rhythms. rhythmic variation is one of his best qualities as a rapper, while saying anything important is one of his worst. most of the cd revolves around the fact that he is a doctor with an enthusiasm for the ladies, and there is much talk of random disgusting made up ailments and several references to shooting excement onto faces. songs like halfsharkalligator are completely random and bizarre but keith somehow makes them addictive and irresistible. he never gets boring, sometimes leaving a ton of silence at the end of unfinished verses before going back to the chorus. you could call him a rap genius, in any case he is one of the most consistently creative guys out there for real. but enough about him...
dan the automator is a great producer; all his beats are good except earth people, but I think his other work on handsome boy and deltron is much better. I think this album lets him show his style but it feels less adapted than the deltron stuff. Blue Flowers is especially artful in its use of strings, and it is revisited and given a different treatment later on in the album. the well crafted dark atmospheric quality of his work needs little explanation if you have heard it at all, and there is little from him that you would not expect. one of the best things about the album is how keith and dan's senses of rhythm go together so well to create something so that it doesn't matter that the words don't make any sense.
dj q-bert is really good and he shows off sometimes when there is no rapping, and gets the whole song to himself on bear witness. he is really good, one of the best out there.
So this cd is a great OBVIOUSLY UNDERGROUND piece of work if you think random grossness and twisted sexual humor is funny. The spooky beats provide an excellent backdrop for keith's inspired ramblings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Andre Benjamin wishes he was.., Feb 12 2004

Outkast, especially, the recent Love Below album from Andre ICE COLD 3000 have tried to not only emulate this album but copy it. Andre Benjamin is the pop star version of Kool Kieth, Black Elvis and Dr. Octagon. This is the original.

This cd changed my life. I remember my friend saying "listen to this, its my brothers...this guy is crazy" I burned a copy, back in 98 or whenever, and I became a new man. All the other reviews have the facts about the cd, this is more of the feel. This cd is so crazy, so weird, so childish and so awesome, it is unable to be comprehended. Keep in mind it came out in 96, I beleive. What was rap like back then? Old school. Keith and Dan came up with this. Genius. This cd is still better than most of the cd's I own today. I know some people say it is childlish, fecal blah blah. Yeah it is. So? Does it bother you? Why? can't handle words like poo poo? Too adult eh? There isnt a single cuss word on this whole cd that I can think of. If you want to explore a new area in music, BUY THIS. It turned me on to undeground and freed me from MTv. I say again, it changed my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn Good, Dec 19 2003
This review is from: Dr. Octagonecologyst (Audio CD)
This is quite possibly my favorite album, Kool Keith is one of the most creative people in music today. Extremely good production on this, Automator and Keith seemed to bring out the best in each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truly Essential Leftfield Hip-Hop Album....., Oct 30 2003
This review is from: Dr. Octagonecologyst (Audio CD)
Possibly the greatest Hip-Hop album you've never heard of....easily as significant & as important as "DJ Shadow's - Endtroducing", with 'Dr Octagon' (aka legendary rapper "Kool Keith"), who assumes the guise of "Dr Octagon" a time travelling alien surgeon, pretending to be a female gynaecologist, and through this pseudonym he lays down some of the most creative, witty, brash, menacing & self-indulgent beats & Rhymes to unparalleled effect, with Kool Keith himself having a very distinctive lyric delivery...seemingly straying out of rhyme frequently and then seemingly managing to pull it all back into a focus and amazingly it all sound completely coherent. Dj Q-Bert handles the turntable duties on this album, and cuts & scratches everything from obscure dialogue (although keeping completely in theme with the 'Dr Octagon' concept) innovative beat construction and deft turntable trickery, and with 'Dan the Automator' casting his sublime leftfield approach to production, this is an album that delights in being quirky, but being a showcase for: the producer (Dan)....Dj (Q-Bert) and rapper (Kool Keith). And with "Blue Flowers" a single that went on to become a cult underground Classic, that still beats 90% of alternative Hip-Hops singles released today hands down. 'Kool Keith', has since distanced himself from this album.....complaining that all his subsequent work was being compared to this, and the only new audience he picked up through this album was 'white', irrespective of it's creators 'Negative' views, this is quite possibly one of the finest alternative & influential underground Hip-Hop albums ever released.

This album has the best production of any kool keith album, and lyrics are up there with black elvis. On a side note, I dont think Kool Keith thinks this is his worst album best white people listen to it, i think he doesnt like it because Automator and him were at odds after the album dropped because they had altercations as to who deserved credit for the album's success...anyways, great album. blue flowers is stupid dope.

5.0 out of 5 stars pleasingly bizarre, July 29 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr. Octagonecologyst (Audio CD)
This particular Kool Keith album is for the few of us that possess a psyche a step above the masses. If you happen to be an individual that follows the norms of everyday life and society as a whole, this album is not even worth considering because you just simply will not understand. Although, to the contrary, if you beg to differ like myself, my friends, and close family members, who happen to live and dwell in bizarre, sometimes disturbing behavioral tendencies, this album will aid and support your habits and remind you that you are not alone.
