5.0 out of 5 stars WITHOUT THOSE INDIGOS WHERE WOULD I BE?
The day this collection came out I ran up to Border's to check it out. I stood in the center of the store with the headphones on and skipped immediately to Water is Wide. It was so gorgeous I cried on the spot. That was 5 years ago and I haven't been able to listen to that song yet without a chill going up my spine. Another few notables: Hold Me Jordan (Tara Mclean),...

I had to give this cd 5 stars based on the fact the in contains one of the best songs I've ever heard...BUY IT!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Get Acquainted with Some Amazing Women, Aug 23 2001

In all honesty, I initially regretted buying this album. I don't even know why I picked it up. After beginning to explore that incredible world of music that isn't mainstream, however, I gave myself a hearty pat on the back. I am partial to disc 2, however. You've got "Water is Wide", a great version of "What Do You Hear in These Sounds", Wild Strawberries, and Tracy Bonham all in one place. Shawn Colvin's "Trouble" is a delightful surprise. Indigo Girls, "Four Leaf Clover", "Eternal Flame", and the presence of Sarah McLachlan make disc 1 tolerable, but the true value of this set lies in the diverse sampling of incredible female artists it presents.

Buy it if you're looking for a good to explore the genre, or if you really love Dar Williams. If what you're looking for is "I Don't Want to Think About it", then buy the Foxfire soundtrack, and if you want "Eternal Flame", seriously, go with the Bangles unless you're partial to Susanna Hoffs. Even if you only enjoy one or two songs, however, this album will make you wish you'd made it to Lilith Fair.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Jan 8 2001

I bought this album the day it came out, mostly for the version of Building A Mystery, which sounds like every other live version of that song. I admit that I don't even like most of these artists, but I enjoy every artist when they play live and on this compilation disc of the first Lilith Fair, it just doesn't work. Meredith Brooks' song Wash My Hands is good, but her singing -or lack of- completely ruins it. The only songs on here that are worthwhile are Water Is Wide (gorgeous), Hold Me Jordan, Mississippi, and Wash My Hands.

Beacause I am a lover of all types of music, it is nice to have an album that covers quite a few different styles from rock, alternative, folk, country, and even world. What is so good about albums like this, that feature not only well known talent, but also emerging artists is that it allows you to listen to artists that otherwise you probably would never even get to hear. Take Lhasa for instance. I had never heard of her before, but the traditional song she sings 'El Payande' is one of the best on the album, and leaves you wanting more, and now I will most certainly purchase any albums that she has. The same can be said for Yungchen Lhamo. Before hearing her on this album, I had never given Tibetan music a second thought. But it really is beautiful, her voice soaring and haunting, singing alone with no musical accompaniment. These 2 songs are worth the price of this album alone, but when you realise you are getting 25 songs, it's a bargain.

I love the album "jagged little pill". When I heard the song "Thank you", I couldn't buy the album quick enough. I was so disappointed! The rest of the album was just awful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb live work!, Sep 2 2000

Really a good cd!! there are a lot of great live performances here! Suzanna Hoffs acoustic performance of Eternal Flame is beautifull. Ohter favourites of me: Falling In Love from Lisa Loeb, Rock In This Pocket from Suzanne Vega, Building A Mistery from Sarah Mclachlan, Hold Me Jordan from Tara Mclean, and Going Back To Harlam from Emmylou Harris. But the best song is ofcourse Mississippi from Paula Cole. What a voice!! I really like the part when she yells to the climax of the song and releases that great height is her voice. Really, only for that song I would buy this cd!

3.0 out of 5 stars O-Tay, July 2 2000

This review is from: Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music (Audio CD)
I love Lilith Fair and am a huge fan of most of the artists. BUT, the tracks are not the artist's best songs! Paula Cole's Mississippi and Shawn Colvin's Trouble are should not have been included! However, I did enjoy Sarah McLachlan's Building a Mystery, Sarah McLachlan/Jewel/Indigo Girls' Water Is Wide/ and a couple others. All in all it way O-Tay but it could have been way better!

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, July 2 2000
This review is from: Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music (Audio CD)
I when heard this cd the first time I thought it was horrible. The music didn't flow right. (I gues were arranged in the order by which they say sang, which would help the listen visualize being there but)... When I analized the music "seperately" it really didn't seem as bad. But the songs went from slow and soft to loud "rock" (give me a break)! In short: I felt the music was thrown together and because of that it was impersonal, and annoying.
