5.0 out of 5 stars A big Fan!, Oct 9 2003
This review is from: This Child (Audio CD)
Hey aglukark fans, this album is a must have. Though it came out in Sept. '96 I still listen to it over and over and over again. It's album I cannot get tired of. The same goes for the next album and the newest album, which I'm just starting to break in. Get this album, the songs talk of a lot of different stories and sometimes it feels like ms. aglukark knows exactly what you're going through and shares it with you through her music. It's very touching, and peaceful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Native Music, Oct 27 2002

This review is from: This Child (Audio CD)
I Love this CD and know that Amazon has done the world a great service carrying her music and making it acessable for everyone. I know Susan, and it was her specialness that made me look up her music at amazon. I was shocked to see how famous she is In Canada as this woman is so gentle and kind and warm and down to earth as a person, and has done remarkable things besides singing and recording... shes a great blessing! I hope she keeps recording forever. Enjoy! This is a good gift CD too, and good for children to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars This child by S. Aglukark - a CD that goes to heart, Oct 24 2002

By chance I heart her music in Tillsonburg not far from Toronto in the Micheal-Collection of Inuit Art.
This Music had a deeo impression on me. The texts combained with rythm goes under your skin.
Not only are the texts about common topics, they also describe the feelings of the people so far north the place I come from.
In many songs I find myself, especially in "this child" and "Don't suffer from silence".
As well as other CD's from Susan Aglukark I can only highly recommend the CD to everyone who really like to listen!! to music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Hear!, Oct 17 2002

This is a beautifully produced album from a part of the world we don't hear from often. I have listened to many indigenous performers from North America and many of these performances are marred by an amateurish production. Not so on this cd. It is non-commercial yet very attractive to a non-Inuit listener. Susan is a talented songwriter and singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, July 25 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: This Child (Audio CD)
Aglukark is an absolutely wonderful singer and songwriter and this is a beautiful showcase of her talents. There's not even a smidgen of crass commercialism to be found (although this album was certified double platinum). Rather, Aglukark bridges her two worlds effortlessly and beguilingly. Bewarned, several of the tracks on this CD are rather depressing, but I can't even find fault with this. There is honesty and courage in Aglukark's sad songs, not sappy self-pity (though she does a wonderful treatment of that, too, in "Breaking Down"). I can't recommend this CD highly enough--one of the best music purchases I ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving and beautiful, Nov 27 2000

The opening of the first song on this album, will grab your attention, with its eeriness. It sounds like a cold wind blowing over the barren icelands of northern Canada. Then Susan starts singing in Inuit. And for the rest of the album you'll be totally absorbed. Some songs are sung completely in English, some with a mixture of English and Inuit, but each song has a story to tell, of Native peoples suffering, hope, spirituality and history. It is a very moving and beautiful album and something a little different from a lot of the mainstream music of today. A refreshing change.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Canadian North in Song, Feb 12 2000

I have just been sent this CD as a gift from home (I am an ex-pat) and it immediately takes me to my homeland. The artist excels in her poetry as well as her voice and the drums bring the unique gift of spirit that our native peoples offer us with their music. Some of the songs are personal, some are cultural, but all reflect an appreciation for life and for people. Susan Aglukark has the rare ability of being able to let us see through her eyes while listening to her voice. I look forward to hearing her other two albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars So nice!, Jan 14 1999

As the Inuit would say, "Isumina pioyualu" which is to say, totally awesome. Note that Inuit is the plural of Inuk, a person... Buy this album, folks.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album to sit back, relax and enjoy for the quality., July 24 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: This Child (Audio CD)
The first time I heard this disc, I kept playing it over and over. That's the kind of smooth melodic music it is. If you want something that mixes spirituality, a stunning voice, non-commercialized sounds and lyrics you enjoy repeating, this is for you. Some of the songs you will want to play as loud as your system allows, and others you will want to sip wine to and just mellow with. If you like Strunz and Farah for example, you'll love this.
