Two virtuoso's captured live,
By
This review is from: Dave Matthews And Tim Reynolds Live At Luther College (Audio CD)
Unfortunately, you cannot capture the brilliance of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds live on an album. But this one comes close. We saw this dynamic duo in Oxford England March 2007, as they played for more than three hours. Their performance live is unmatchable. This album demonstrates yet again what an amazing songwriter, singer and acoustic guitar player Dave Matthews is...and it shows glimpses of the amazing talent that is Tim Reynolds. Dave's lyrics shine in this acoustic set more so than in DMB studio albums, as his voice becomes the third instrument in this duo. Through Dancing Nancies, #41, Dancing Nancies and Cry Freedom, Dave's songwriting expertise is more visible than with the full band. Tim Reynolds is amazing live and in person, and my one issue with this album is that his contributions aren't noticeable unless you know what you are listening for. But you can certainly hear his lead licks on #41, Dancing Nancies and Say Goodbye. An excellent album, see them in concert if you get the chance.

My Favorite Album,

Yep. This album, out of my entire library, is my overall favorite. Before I heard this album, I wasn't really into Dave Matthews Band at all. I had heard some singles and thought they were good, but not really enough to warrant digging deeper or really listening to the band. The moment Tripping Billies graced the speakers of the friend's house I was at, everything changed. Everything seemed to click and I was amazed at the chemistry that Dave and Tim had and at the awesomeness of the performance. Not to mention the song totally ruled. After that I got my own copy of the album and systematically fell in love with almost every single song on it. There are almost no misses here, every song is played beautifully and flawlessly. The tone of their guitars is also stunning, whoever recorded this thing knows how to record a guitar tone the right way. You can hear so much nuance and sound coming from their guitars, its just stunning. The crowd is also wonderful for this show; they actually shut up during the quiet parts (for the most part). Song highlights include basically everything. You'll eventually come to love pretty much every song on this thing and play it over and over again; I know I did. But if you really need highlights, try an awesome rendition of the rare Deed Is Done. Or how about a nice, slow, funky What Would You Say segued into Screaming From The Minarets? Maybe the wonderful performances of Dancing Nancies, Cry Freedom, Tripping Billies, One Sweet World and #41. But the REALLY good stuff is on disc 2. It starts out with maybe the best Typical Situation ever played - ever. Tim Reynolds' guitar solo is simply something that needs to be heard. You'll be able to clean the floor with your jaw. Stream is a tour-de-force and will reteach you how to play the guitar. Warehouse is...indescribable. I dunno if I have much more room to write, but I have to mention Seek Up, Say Goodbye, Ants Marching, a stunning Halloween, and a beautiful Two Step. Quite simply, this is my favorite album of all time. Mainly because it brings back many old memories, but still new ones are being created every time I listen to it. If you haven't heard much Dave Matthews Band, LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM FIRST.

I was showing my friend how to rip cd's, and ended up with this double disc on my computer. I had never really listend to DMB all that much, but do appreciate good accoustic music. After hearing this set, it is EASILY in my top 10 list of all time best albums. I get blown away every time I listen to it, and it only served to enhance my appreciation of DMB. I mostly listen to punk like minor threat/anti-flag, guitar rock like seaweed and the white stripes, and more experimental stuff from bands like fugazi and sonic youth. This live album added one more genre to my daily rotation. It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck, just as high as 12XU or stepping stone by minor threat. This blows my mind over and over again. An absolute must have, even if you think you don't like DMB, or have never listened to them before. Guaranteed to please even the pickiest ears.

This CD is one of the best DMB CD's out there. The song selection is second to none, Dave's playful guitar playing off of Tim's masterful solos is awesome! The only thing better than this CD would have been actually being there to witness this magic...

This is the cd that made me love dave. Him and tim blow me away with daves singing which some people find unbarable but i find hypnotic and tims mind boggling guitar solos this set of cd's is always in my cd player. #41 is to the best song he has ever written and this version makes it so much better. Tims guitar solo in what would you say is amazing and i could listen to that all day. The second disc is awesome Typical Situation ( which i am listeing to now) is such a kick back and relax song, tims stream makes me want to learn to play guitar, warehouse....great, say goodbye is one of his best songs, the emotion in holloween is second to none as is this cd, if u have loved dave forever get this cd and if u dont like dave now get this cd and you will by the end of its 2 discs i guarentee it.

Then buy these cds!! These will likely go down as my favorite live cds ever. Dave and Tim together are simply magical. They are my favorite discs to sing along to, whether I am in the shower, on a road trip, or just chilling out at home...this music is perfect for any mood. Dave's talent and passion shine through on every song. There is something about hearing someone play with just a guitar and a mic that amazes me...no studio equipment, no alterations...just pure music!!

I have had the pleasure of seeing a show on the Dave and Friends tour. Dave and Tim opened the show by playing a couple of songs, just them, and it was amazing. This album is better than that.Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds were meant to play together. They seem to flow with the music the other person is playing. Tim's guitar playing, especially on "Stream", is just amazing-it's surprising his guitar can handle how intensly he's playing. First of all, "One Sweet World" is a great song and was a good song to start the show with. "Jimi Thing" is one of my favorite Dave Matthews Band songs and Dave and Tim do a great job without the rest of the band. I wasn't really a fan of the slow version of "What Would You Say", but it was still good. "Ants Marching" is my all-time favorite Dave Matthews Band song and Tim does a great job filling in Boyd's solo. The "Dancing Nancies" intro is pretty good. Personally I think that the violin needs to be in this song, but it doesn't really matter. The "Warehouse" intro is amazing, and the actual song is fantastic. Dave really tears it up on "Halloween". "Two Step" is an great way to end the show. This album has most of Dave's best songs. I was really hoping that they would play "Recently" or "#34", but this album is amazing anyway. Buy this cd. It is great and you will not be wasting you money. Thank you for your time.

"Live at Luther College" is a great live album thatis unlike any DMB studio album because the band members have been replaced by Tim Reynolds. The result is a great live concert that uses guitar for all background music, which I actually prefer. The song selection is excellent primarily coming from the band's first two studio releases ("Under the Table and Dreaming" and "Crash") and also from "Remember Two Things." The result is a truly astounding live album in terms of quality and energy. The crowd feeds off Dave's enthusiasm but is also respectful enough to remain silent while he plays. It is hard to explain the difference between Dave and DMB but if you have heard the bonus CD with Some Devil then you have heard a taste of this two disc album. Otherwise, if you appreciate acoustic guitar over the various intruments that the band experiments with, then this is the album for you. It was for me.
