Deliciously haunting,

El Greco is simply deep & haunting. vangelis's music seems to be interpreted differently by many listeners, his fans, serious ones, will definitely enjoy this album. The movements seem to rise from long gone distant memories, a time dimension we are not familiar with, think of someone dipping into a steady flow of sombre emotions experiencing the hours of ancient times chiming out its presence with devastating clarity. It is almost as if History is talking to us from the past, but not in words. whatever the lesson or feeling it is conveying, it is nonetheless so deeply eloquent & reverent. This Cd is a modern musical masterpiece.

a Modern Masterpiece,

I have been following Vangelis for well over 25 years and I think this is one of his best. Slowly evolving, deeply atmospheric, and sometimes downright creepy. Very moving and emotional, especially the two sections that feature vocals. The electronics are especially more modern sounding ( I personally find that some of his earlier, more popular and more "classic" - at least in terms of fans' preferances - work sounds terribly dated,as far as sound quality and the keyboards and synthesizers he used ) while at the same time having a timeless sound, like good orchestral work should. Very highly recommended to fans. ( You know who you are. )

I didn't know much about El Greco the artist before my trip to Spain last spring when I was fortunate enough to visit the Toledo Cathedral which is a magnificent work of art in itself.(the building alone took more than 200 years to build) This cathedral houses an extensive of El Greco's works.I bought the c.d. when I got back because it seemed a bit obscure and an odd choice for a tribute (?) of this nature. I found when I listened to Vangelis' work that it did evoke the somber (but not depressing) mood of the Cathedral and one can imagine the artist working there and going there for inspiration and meditation. You don't have to go to Spain to appreciate this music, but it did enhance my appreciation of it. The music exudes a definite "Old World" vibe. Not for everyone, but then again, what is?

Vangelis argueably is my all time favorite music composer. Although there are others such as Mozart, John Williams, Yanni and a host of others that I also appreciate, Vangelis delivers music that is truly awe-inspiring and unforgettable. In my opinion, you always learn something new about a culture and different ranges of sound from listening to his albums. Whenever I listen to this album it reminds me of Egyptian pyraminds and the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Finally...that brings me to my point... The soundtrack is very atmospheric and compliments the beautiful scenery of dark temples and egyptian cities. It's like you're actually there! That's what El Greco does for me. Hope this review is helpful

Think of dark, deep dungeons. Iron chains clashing against cold stone, deep, deep down in some black abyss. The first movement of this atmospheric work conjures images of foreboding and lost souls! Sounds a bit scary, but I've got to say after a few good listens the whole piece just drew me in. Now, obviously, like a lot of Vangelis' works, El Greco isn't a CD to be put on as light background music or up-tempo driving music. It is serious and it does take time to absorb but, ultimately, this is a work that really can take you on a journey. You have to be prepared to LISTEN. This applies to Vangelis fans also. There are echoes of his other works in here, like Bounty, 1492, Oceanic and Voices. However, El Greco is a lot darker than all of these in essence. That's not to say there aren't any touches of sparkle or daylight. These occur occasionally and lift you out of the deep fog for a moment. One particular piece just mesmerises with Vangelis playing ascending arpeggios on the piano that capture the imagination and add movement and melody to a quite sombre work. There also areas of operatic grandeur, but still, the overall production just hangs over the whole piece like a damp fog, pulling you down and immersing you in some fantastical, dark, late-Medieval world. El Greco is probably not for all fans but it's most certainly one of Vangelis' finest works. Invite it in.

El Greco~ Vangelis is a very deep and introspective album. Vangelis makes the listener think and this very good since most electronic music of today is mindless sound loops and drum machines.
