One of the Best Metal CDs Ever,
By Ghost of Metal Past (Circle Pines, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seven Churches (Audio CD)
This is a classic CD that is one of the 10 most import metal CDs ever to be released because it spawned an entirely new genre - death metal. I am not much of a fan of the current cookie cutter/cookie monster death metal bands but Possessed got it right way back at the beginning. This CD should also appeal to those who like classic 80s thrash.Jeff Becerra is not a cookie monster vocalist. He has a growling delivery but it is far from cartoonish. He is also capable of delivering quite a shriek. Check out the vocals near the middle of 'Evil Warriors' where he builds into a screaming frenzy - cool. And the piercing crescendo scream "Death MetAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!" near the end of that song. The title track starts with a halting, galloping guitar riff, then the vocals, bass and drums kick in and it's so heavy it practically tears your face off. Those are just a handful of highlights, though. Everything on this disc totally annihilates! If you want great production, buy a movie soundtrack. If you want virtuoso musicianship, get a Malmsteen CD, if you want intelligent lyrics, read Shakespeare. If you want a top-notch metal CD that kicks you in the gut every time you listen to it and keeps you coming back for more, get Seven Churches.

POSSESSED,
By Obiturized "Metal fan" (New Hampshire) - See all my reviews

WOW!, I just got this today, I heard they helped start Death Metal, so I had to check them out for myself, WOW, what a great band they were, Insane vocals, killer rythem/leads, brutal drumming, all out, old school Thrash/Death, definetly reccomended for ones who likes Death, Obituary, Pestilence ext, production is a bit raw, but it's not too bad, and it fits the music well, NOT FOR THE WEAK, this stuff was EVIL!

The Definative Death Metal and Thrash Masterpiece,
By B-R-Mike M. (Old Lyme, CT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seven Churches (Audio CD)
Possessed were one of the most dark and furious thrash bands of all time. Mixing Metallica and Slayer with dark creepy riffs and satanic lyrics, this album gave birth to Death Metal and gave a career to guitarist Larry LaLonde of Primus. This album is dark, fast and heavy as a house with songs that could bring one down. With a dark and depressed vocalist and a drummer on the brink to insanity, this album is rich with gloom and darkness. The evil lyrics of songs like "Exorchist", "Pentagram", and "Satan's Curse" give this album an edge like no other. So, buy this album. Highly recommended and definately a must hear, this is the album that all should hear.

The Sign The Points To Death Metal,
By Ronald Placeres "Chulo" (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seven Churches (Audio CD)
Music itself is a progression and the metal genre is no different. When it comes to death metal, it has its roots in thrash with bands like Metallica, Slayer and Venom. Than it gets heavier with thrash bands who point the way to death metal like Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Dark Angel and this band, Possessed who are the sign that leads to death metal with Death being the front door. It all starts with this album. This is one of the classic albums that influenced a lot of the early death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse and Vader. Those 2 bands have covered songs from this album. Cannibal Corpse covered The Exorcist. That version is on the Hammer Smashed Face EP. Vader covered Death Metal. That version is found on Future Of The Past. Anyway, here's my review. This album has a lot of early death metal elements making it an album ahead of its time. Lets discrible it first by the music. The music is like a mix of Metallica's Kill 'Em All, early Slayer albums like Show No Mercy and early elements found in Death's Scream Bloody Gore. It's heavy, brutal, intense, evil and satanic. It has plenty of speed with some mid-80's style thrash but with death metal elements like blast beasts and rolling snare drum sounds. The vocals on the other hand sound a lot like the late Chuck Schuldiner (Death/Control Denied). Chuck has admitted in an interview that this album influenced him and you can tell just by listening to the vocals as well as the music. Some of the best songs here are The Exorcist, Burning In Hell, Evil Warriors, Seven Churches, Satan's Curse, Holy Hell, Twisted Minds and Death Metal. Buy this album and prepare for a joyride through Hell. You'll ejoy it.

Ugg....Just pain bad musicianship.,
By "tylordthemighty" (U.S.A.) - See all my reviews

Wow this album plain sounds sounds bad. This sounds worse than any other album I have ever heard, and I have heard plenty! This sounds worse than a cheap demo on a worn out cassette tape. I guess it doesn't matter because the songs are crap too. The vocals are terrible and so is the musicianship. This has to be one of the worst albums I have ever had the unpleasure of listening to! If you like metal, go listen to Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Iron Maiden, or Anthrax. Anyone but Possessed!

Absolutly terrible production!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Seven Churches (Audio CD)
Out of all the albums that I have heard, this is one of the worst when it comes to production. It literally sounds like they hung up a mike in their rehersal room! It sounds terrible! If somehow you can get though the ransid production, then you find out that the band has no real talent. Sorry Possessed fans (the few of you out there), but there is much better material out there than this. Poor lyrics, poor riffs, and poor guitar playing! Yes you read right! Possessed is talentless and only got notieced for a VERY short time because of their evil image. I'm not buying into it and intelligent listeners shouldn't either. Go listen to Testament, old Metallica, Megadeth, etc, anything but this. There is no enjoyment on this album. You can't even feed off of the aggression like on Slayer albums. I'm glad Possessed is dead. These guys gave metal a bad name.

I must have been possessed to buy this,
By Gilbert Brotherhood (United States) - See all my reviews

Maybe I would have liked these guys if I had heard them when they first arrived on the metal scene, but hearing them now...WOW these guys were bad! I will give them credit, they were one of starters of the Death/Black Metal movement but that doesn't necessarily make them good. Even with the CD remastered it sounds terrible. The original production was just horendous. Plus the lyrics and guitar playing is terrible! Not to mention the vocals. Even for Death Metal vocals these are bad. I see these guys made a second album, but after hearing this monstrosity I think I will pass on it. There is MUCH better metal out there.

Possessed, a talentless wonder,
By "hardrockatlanta" (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seven Churches (Audio CD)
It's amazing how many people praise this album, because basically this is not an album worthy of praise. We get very poor lyrical writing, very poor singing talent, very poor musicianship. This album literally hurts to listen too. The production is actually worse than Venom's first couple of albums. Possessed didn't last long, and after hearing this, I can see and hear why. They only reason I can think of why people praise this CD is because Possessed is considered one of the founders of "Black/Death Metal". Whoopy! Not. If you want "evil" lyrics, go listen to Venom. At least they have talent.
