This film has an interesting premise, but then focuses mainly on the sexuality of the two young leads. When two children are the only survivors of a shipwreck, they are able to go on with life, living by their wits and the abundant resources on the island they call home. Natures beauty and the simplicity of life is stunning.
The sad truth about "The Blue Lagoon" is, that when these "kids" become mature teenagers, though completely "innocent", they act out sexually, even create a child. The parenthood in itself is still beautiful, however these plot elements are exploited.
Millions of people went to see this movie at theaters on the rumors that "Brooke & Chris have nude scenes!". The nudity is brief and not worth the ticket price. The idea for a beautiful film was there, but someone ruined the blue prints and the result was "Blue Lagoon". The target audience is clearly youngsters who legally couldn't even see this film at a theater.**

To counter the numerous suggestions by other reviews that this film is suitable for preteens to introduce concepts of sexuality and "coming of age", I must point out that the film is rated R, for good reason. If you want to watch it with your children, that's your perogative, but let me say that I watched it when I was 11, and I was quite blown away by the graphic depictions of sexual scenes in the movies, and it wouldn't have made much of a difference if my parents were there with me or not. Granted, these are "tender" scenes without violence or disrepect like many other movies, but still, I had never seen anything like it, and it was too much all at once. So, beware.

So I sat down to watch The Blue Lagoon. It's a great movie, but I couldn't help but notice how young Brooke Sheilds looked. It could have been because she was only 15 at the time. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it illegal to put a 15 year old naked in a Motion Picture? Two words come to mind....Kiddie Porn. Just a thought...

A body double was used for Brooke Shields. As far as the movie itself, it's not well-done at any level. Brooke Shields' acting ability seems to have deteriorated compared to her portrayal of a child prostitute in "Pretty Baby." Regardless, the beauty of a young Brooke Shields is the only reason to own this DVD.
