Wow!!!
All I have to say is...GET THIS CD! The music is so beautiful and amazing - it's pretty much as good as the Lord of the Rings soundtracks, which is saying a lot! Even though the main themes are repeated quite a few times, it's not exactly the same each time, so it doesn't get annoying enough to change the song. For me it took a while to get to like this soundtrack, but...

Boring Mood Music.
I just want to say that I saw the movie and loved it. I rushed out and bought the soundtrack thinking that I would be buying a piece of that magic, but I was sorely dissapointed. The soundtrack is nothing but low mood music and percussional pieces. There are only three or four tracks on it that are actually fun to listen too (the ones with the heavy drums), and the rest...

All I have to say is...GET THIS CD! The music is so beautiful and amazing - it's pretty much as good as the Lord of the Rings soundtracks, which is saying a lot! Even though the main themes are repeated quite a few times, it's not exactly the same each time, so it doesn't get annoying enough to change the song. For me it took a while to get to like this soundtrack, but once I started listening to it more, I loved it! The only slightly disappointing thing about the Japanese version is that the lady who sings in # 20's voice is not what I would call...pretty. (So you're not really missing anything if you get the English versoin, in my opinion.) But who cares?! The rest of the ost is great! I highly recommend this cd! I also recommend the soundtrack to My Neighbor Totoro!

Beautiful and Haunting, Oct. 24 2003
From the moment I finished the movie, I knew I wanted the soundtrack. The haunting tunes and smooth melodies are not only good with the movie, but on their own. Each song has it's own theme, and rarely is a melody used more than once. Joe Hisaishi, the composer of the CD, has taken the visual beauty of Princess Mononoke and turned it into a powerful music score. His uses wind instruments like flutes and string instruments such as violins to create the flowing experience that follows through the entire soundtrack. One song that leaves this flowing theme is that of the 'Battle Drums.' Instead of the wind and strings, Hisaishi moves to the powerful drums of Kodo. I have been to a Kodo performance, and Hisaishi takes the long Japanese tradition and shifts it perfectly to fit in with both the movie and the soundtrack. All I can say is that this soundtrack is worth it; it is not necessary to see the movie to enjoy Hisaishi's masterpiece.

I would add that I was so impressed with this soundtrack that I bought an album of Hisaishi's works contained on a single disc. My conclusion is that the magic that went into making this movie - and its soundtrack - resulted from an astonishing chemistry of creative people influencing each other in amazing ways. Alone, Hisaishi is a tunesmith of pleasing pop and not much more. Here, he is a tried-and-true composer. This is his great masterpiece. Even if you call this 'mood' music, it is a magical mood to be in. For a movie that is not about music, this is one of the great soundtracks in the history of the motion picture art.

Since I first saw "Princess Mononoke," I fell in love with the soundtrack. I buy very few of the modern scores, since I prefer the classic orchestral scores of the '60s and '70s, but I would almost rank this with "Braveheart" and Howard Shore's music for "Lord of the Rings." Since I bought it, I have listened to little else. One note: Given their equally high reviews here, I also bought the Symphonic Suite from the same film, and oddly enough, found it less "listenable" and just a bit more intense when I would have expected the reverse. However, neither will be a disappointment if you want a lush, romantic film score with a bit of Japanese flavor (though it is more European). The vocals are also lovely, both the Japanese and the English.

Sad, beautiful, and breath-taking this composition. Very few other musical scores are the same in factors of beauty. A must for the people who have viewed the movie or enjoy Japanese orchestral music. One and only one drawback is the mononoke ending theme is in English.

I've been wanting to get this for a long time and am not disapointed.Wonderful large full booming mucis with a soft touch of nature in it.Complmary to the feauture film.

Can't get any better than this..., Oct. 17 2002
This is one of the best soundtracks ever. Nothing before it and nothing after it will ever quite hit the emotional level that Mononoke has. The melodies are beautiful and peaceful; even the ones from battles and things are great, which usually you can't say about other fighting tracks on different cd's. If you want something with depth that you probably will never get tired of (unless you don't have a soul which i highly doubt) then pick up Mononoke. The only disappointment I found here was that they didn't use the Japanese version of the theme song. It's longer and much more pretty. OO; Oh well.

Very Beautiful, Oct. 15 2002
^^ I REALY REALLY recommend this CD because it's a beautiful, breath-taking experience. After listening to it once, you'll want to hear it again - the drums are great and the melodies can sometimes remind you of things you never thought classical music could remind you of. (i won't go into this) if you don't like classical music, get this anyway - after hearing it once i got hooked. ^____^ very good cd, all around the best sound track i've heard in a long time.
