5.0 out of 5 stars Chantal is amazing., Dec 27 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Under These Rocks And Stones (Audio CD)
I thought "Under these rocks and stones" was definitely Chantal's best work. Although I still appreciate her new music, I always find myself going back to her debut. It has a raw feel; emotionally as well. My favourite tracks are "Don't be good" and "Wayne" I definitely recommend this cd to any Chantal fan, you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album, full of feeling, Jun 9 2004

This debut album from Canadian Chantal Kreviazuk reminds one very much of 'Little Earthquakes' from Tori Amos; there's a powerful voice that can range from sultry to angst filled, There's well played piano present through the bulk of the tracks and there's really strong feeling in the lyrics and tone of the various songs. Chantal isn't an Amos clone, though - she finds her ground quickly and offers a number of well formed tracks starting with the upbeat 'God Made Me' to those that convey greater emotion ('Surrounded', for example, talks about the real life suicide of a friend of hers). Wholly recommended for fans of strong female singers.

Chantal Kreviazuk is a wonderful talent and this is a smokin' debut. From the well-known opening track on, you'll be hooked to her playing and singing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good but, Not Christian Music, Mar 12 2004

I found this cd when I was searching for some new up-and-coming Christian artists. Since it was found in my search and since some of the track titles have religious meaning, I assumed that Chantal was a Christian artist. Not so. The music is good and I'm sure she's talented if you like the "let's wallow in self-pity" emotional drama type of stuff. Just didn't want someone else to buy this thinking they were getting a Christian CD, and I'll check discography on unknown artists next time. Even though I didn't like this CD, I gave it 5 stars so that I wouldn't mess up the rating just because I bought the wrong cd. Cheers to all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching Talent, Dec 17 2003

I think I first heard one of Chantal's songs on a popular teen tv show. Her songwriting is deep and personal, very moving, songs you can relate to. To me she does stand out from other singers. There is not much drama or glitz around her. I think she is a secret talented songwriter- genuine feelings in the songs. My favorite songs are "Surrounded" and "Imaginary Friend". This was my favorite album of hers as I also have her others. "Green Apples" is a feel good song, very sweet and mellow. Go ahead and get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Debut, Sep 8 2003
When Chantal Kreviazuk hit the music scene in 1996, comparisons between her and Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morissette were drawn almost immediately. It was easy to categorize them all in one lump, since it was an era where the female singer songwriters dominated and seemed to be coming out of the woodworks. Chantal is one of the few who managed to survive it after the genre died down a bit, and is still making music. Her debut album UNDER THESE ROCKS AND STONES is nothing short of remarkable. The songwriting is a little meandering and ongoing, but so deep and personal, it's hard not to take notice. The album had a few hits, namely "Wayne", "Surrounded", "God Made Me" and "Believer". "Wayne" is my favorite track, the emotion is just so raw and alive. "Surrounded" is also a very beautiful, though sad song. Chantal recorded this album after her motorcycle accident in the mid 90s while in Europe. Other highlights include "Grace", "Imaginary Friend", "Boot", "Green Apples", and more.

Wonderful album. Great, sensative lyrics, but with a sense of humor as well. Hell of a voice too.
