I add my wholehearted recommendation!Cohen's lyrics with Warnes' vocals are a perfect combination. You will receive full value for your money on the magnificent cover of "Joan of Arc" alone. I always push replay to hear it again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite, Sep 26 2006

This review is from: Famous Blue Raincoat (Audio CD)
This album was released at a time when Cohen was almost forgotten, about seven years before the tribute albums I'm Your Fan and Tower Of Song would spur renewed interest in his work. Warnes' interpretations are always graceful and moving.

She understands Cohen's music well, having done backing vocals on some of his albums like Various Positions, and she covers his songs with loving dedication. My favorites include Aint No Cure For Love (from Cohen's I'm Your Man), Coming Back To You (from Various Positions), Came So Far For Beauty (from Recent Songs) and of course the formidable Joan Of Arc where Cohen himself sings some of the verses.

Warnes' voice is the perfect vehicle for his poetic lyrics of romantic longing and despair, and my only complaint is that I would have loved to hear her interpretations of Suzanne and Sisters Of Mercy too. Another great Cohen tribute album is Democracy by Judy Collins, the very first artist who covered his songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it!, Oct 28 2004
By A Customer
I grew up on this amazing album. My dad used to play "The Song of Bernadette" for me every night to put me to sleep. Now I am in my 20's and still love to listen to this amazing compolation of LC songs. A must have for any eclectic music collection and now that I am out on my own, and my dad has confiscated his copy, I am buying it for myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars A haunting work of emotional genius!, Jun 17 2004
Cohen's genius lyrics, breathtaking even on their own, coupled with Jennifer Warnes' voice make for one of the most emotionally moving cds I have ever listened to. Jennifer's rendition of Famous Blue Raincoat actually had me in tears, which I don't think any song has ever done to me before. And Joan of Arc (in which Cohen himself sings as well) sent repeated tingles up my spine, to the point where it might be accurate to say that I was wracked by chills! Her voice is so hauntingly pure and beautiful, deep and rich yet easily able to hit higher notes with amazing clarity. It is also very obvious when listening why the actual sound recording is lauded as one of the best of its time, and why this cd is often used by professionals to test car sound systems. I could not recommend this cd more highly; I think it would be safe to say it is my favorite cd of all time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, May 12 2004

This is one of the CDs (and records - sounds as good or better on LP, if you can find it) that I keep coming back to again and again. Lord knows why Warnes chooses to sing all the crap she does - she is so often better than her material that it is pure joy to hear her sing such wonderful songs.

BTW the previous reviewer referred to Cohen as a great American songwriter - of course he is not, he is a great Canadian songwriter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true work of art, Feb 4 2004
Beautiful.

Jennifer Warnes sings like an angel, and her voice has never been put to better use than on these songs by Leonard Cohen. The highlight is "Joan of Arc," a powerful, dramatic production that never fails to give me goose bumps.

If I were to put together a list of the 10 greatest albums of all time, this album would definitely be included, maybe even in first place. This is a true work of art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get them all!, Oct 13 2003
By Fred Armstrong (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
I cannot imagine a person that I know not enjoying this work. We have three of Jennifer's albums and are looking forward to others.
I remember "The Right Time of the Night" and "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" and these tunes could all be as large if they got the play they deserve. You will not be wasting your money on this CD because every song is a hit! As to the other Jennifer CD's we are familiar with...The Well is a gem and the others just as enjoyable. Yeah, we are fans...try this music...great lyrics and a gal that sings like an angle...crystal clear tone...every note near perfect...perfect pitch...maybe..and the "Song of Bernadette"...just listen to the words...you will get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT Is A Gift From Artist To Artist, Sep 4 2003
By William Carrino (St. Petersburg, Florida) - See all my reviews
Imagine a CD that combines one of America's greatest living singers with one of America's greatest living songwriters. The results, you would imagine, would be nothing short of brilliant! And, brilliant is the best way to describe the quintesential Jennifer Warnes Album, "FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT-The Songs Of Leonard Cohen". Rarely has there been a finer coupling of artists within the audio medium-Leonard Cohen's words and music seem to have been written specifically with Jennifer Warnes in mind, so perfect is the fit between writer and singer. The CD opens with a punch, with the biting powerhouse "First We Take Manhattan". From this plateau, we are soothed with the classic "Bird On A Wire", an oft-recorded tune from the 1970's, which is given new life and relevance in this interpretation. The title track, "Famous Blue Raincoat" is more confessional than pop song, executed in half-spoken, half-sung tones, and treated with the poetic reverence it so deserves. The two artists combine forces on the album's stand-out cut "Joan of Arc" and the result is nothing less than chilling. "Myself, I long for love and light/ But must it come so cruel/ Must it burn so bright" Cohen and Warnes sing in "Joan of Arc". This is as much the artistic interpretation of St. Joan's last thoughts as it is a treatise on the modern-day human condition. This magnificent combination of music and poetry not only enthralls with its beauty, but makes the listener think. Rounded out by such other works as "Song of Bernadette" and "A Singer Must Die", "FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT" starts out strong and gains momentum as it progresses. Aside from the fact that this recording is so technologically advanced that it set a new standard by which other CD's are now measured, this album is a rare and important work of two artists at the height of their powers. It is a gift from writer to singer, from singer to writer, and we, the listeners, are so much the richer.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow ms. warnes!, May 4 2003
By ron sterzinger (MINNEAPOLIS MN) - See all my reviews
why jennifer warnes isn't popular is why the music industry is beyond hope. the industry would rather put out money making shlock rather than art and this is art. leonard cohen is indeed songwriter par excellence and jennifer is just the songstress to put his words to voice. her work with him in the past gives her that credibility. while i have most of these songs by mr. cohen they are even a greater treasure when done by her. she makes these lyrics shine. while i love all the songs my favorite is "song of bernadette. it brings me very close to tears. a warning: do not listen to this song unless you have taken your medication. it is so sad. it is THE song of unrequited love. probably one of the best ever recorded.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have CD, Feb 5 2003

The title song is worth the price, alone. "Bird on a wire" is worth twice the price! One of the best albums ever. Leonard Cohen is a tremendous song writer. Each song and note is ephemeral. I always try to have multiple copies of this is one album, because I want to share it with others. It is a great introduction to Jennifer Warnes. All the praise you read about this album is deserved.
