5.0 out of 5 stars The TRUE Mariah Shines On In Full Force., Jan 12 2010
By
Steph Feeney (The Shwa, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Butterfly (Audio CD)
Mariah Carey's album 'Butterfly' is where the TRUE Mariah Carey arrived on the scene in full force.

She got out from under Tommy Mottola's thumb and gone was the tame and marketable image that Mariah had jumped on the scene with. Another thing with the 'Butterfly' album is that this showed Mariah's cross roads into the more R&B territory, this was definitely a 'coming of age' album for Mariah Carey and it payed off with stellar results.

"Honey", the first single is a great mid-tempo track. I absolutely love it, and it is one of my favourite Mariah Carey songs of all time; "Butterfly" is a cheesy but cute ballad. However, the song 'Butterfly', despite being a little cheesy, it is still easily accessible. This ballad is so soothing as well, the back-up singers are top notch in this track. Absolutely love this track.

"My All" is a beautiful love ballad that shows Mariah's passion and sincerity that she had show cased many times before with her previous ballads.

"The Roof" is another one of the killer tracks on this album. It's a little darker than anything Mariah had sang before and it's a little bitter sweet about a intimate moment upon on a roof top. Love it, one of my top 5 favourite tracks on the album.

"The Fourth Of July" sounds more like something that could have appeared on her next album "Rainbow", but it's still a nice little ballad; I wouldn't rank it too high on the album overall, but it is a nice little song.

I adore "Breakdown" with Bone Thugs N' Harmony. One of the highlights on 'Butterfly'. I know Mariah's herself praises this song a lot and she should because it most-def is one of her best. I think this song deserved to be featured on Mariah's compilations that came out later on down the line but it was left off #1's because it had not reached number one spot like the singles featured on #1's and the 'greatest hits' collection that came later on didn't include it mainly because Mariah had little, or next to no involvement with that compilation due to her breakdown. It's a shame really because this song is such a classic, awesome song. 'Breakdown' is another step in R&B direction for Mariah.

"Babydoll" took a bit to grow on me but after a few listens it grew on me, and I think it's one of the stand-out tracks featured here. Another good example of Mariah's explorations into the R&B category.

"Close My Eyes" is another beautiful ballad from Mariah Carey. It's one of those songs that you can just lay back and relax to. I can not express how much I love this song, the lyrics are so touching and it gets you thinking a bit as well. Very pretty song.

"Whenever You Call" - WOW. Lovely track by Mariah. This track was re-recorded with Brian McKnight for the #1's album but Mariah's solo version does the song some justice as well.

"Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" is a great dance highlight on the album.

"The Beautiful Ones" - features Dru Hill - is a cover, originally done by Prince. Now, I am not much of a Prince fan and haven't been a big follower of his music or career and I have not heard his version of this track Mariah does the song some justice.

"Outside" is yet another gorgeous ballad.

In retrospect 'Butterfly' features some beautiful ballads that Mariah Carey had become known for but at the same time, 'Butterfly' showed Mariah's independence stepping forward more than it had ever done before and show cased the transition from adult contemporary-pop to mainstream R&B that Mariah Carey was striving for. Her earlier albums always had some great cuts, but were also very spotty (Mariah Carey, Emotions) and others were good but at the same time didn't have the strength to push as far as Butterfly (Music Box, Daydream).

All of the songs on 'Butterfly' were almost all on par with each other and showed Mariah right on top of her game with this album.

Overall, I have to say 'Butterfly' is not only Mariah's first masterpiece but it is my favourite Mariah Carey album. The songs are great, and when you listen to this album it's almost like Mariah took the bull by the horns and knew exactly what she wanted and how she wanted when she was putting 'Butterfly' together. Artistically, it paid off and was a rewarding new direction.

I know there are times when I'm out with Megan, and I constantly talk about this album and it's greatness because I adore it so much.

That said, if you see this album in stores - you have to buy it! It is Mariah's masterpiece!

I have to say Mariah Carey hit all the right notes with this album! Every song on this I give five stars it is breathtaking and the cover is one of her best as well. Honey the first single is a great dance song and one of her best dance songs as well. My All is not the best ballad on the album but still is beautiful. The title song Butterfly is amazing the lyrics are just awsome. Close My Eyes is my favorite song on the whole CD along with The Beautiful Ones. Other great songs are The Roof, Breakdown, Babydoll, Forth of July, Whenever You Call (another favorite of mine) and Outside! A MUST HAVE PICK UP FOR ANY MARIAH CAREY FAN!

I've got the Asian of Japanese edition in this case and its so much better. To conclude the album, there are two remixes of HONEY. Both you won't find on a Single release. They are 13)HONEY (SO SO DEF REMIX) and 14)HONEY (DEF CLUB MIX) both good tracks ot level the album which has a lot of ballads on. But still one of my favortie albums from her until now. Give it a try your choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Mariah CD ever..., July 11 2004
This review is from: Butterfly (Audio CD)
I've heard all the Mariah CDs, with the exception of "Charmbracelet", and I believe that "Butterfly" is her best one, ever. On this CD Mariah was in the middle -- not quite that slow-moving adult contempo stuff, but not yet the trashy hip-hop collabos she attempts in later albums. Mariah retains a sweet mix between ballads and mid-tempo songs on this CD. "Honey" is one of my all time favorite songs, and "My All" has that sweet, Latin soul feel to it. "The Roof" was one of the first good hip-hop feel songs she did, and "Breakdown" is wonderful. On this CD, I can't say there's one song that I mind listening to. (Some, like "Close My Eyes", I'd rather not, but if it's playing I don't HAVE to turn it *shrugs*), and "The Beautiful Ones" is an insightful song from real life and yet not whiny. Like I said -- best Mariah album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still one her best albums beside Daydream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, July 1 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Butterfly (Audio CD)
I have to admit, I bought this album recently. I was all that I expected from mariah herself. Especially the Asian edition which has two bonus tracks. Both remixes of Honey. I've got that edition. it is easy to find in Malaysia. there are fourteen tracks on the asian edition in total. The two bonus tracks are hard to find on a Single release. their Honey (So So Def Remix) Feat. Da Brat and Honey (Def Club Mix) both good dance tracks to level the album to a v.good rate of interest. This album is a bit mature so it gives a picture of how far she's come in her music. Even so this album sold out quite a bunch. I hope Mariah will write albums like this. It is what she's best at. At Least this album and her other albums are better than Britney's horrible hoarse singing and J.Lo any day. Do not forget people. The only reason that remixes and RnB Music became famous was due to mariah's collaboration back in 1995 with ODB in fantasy was the spark to this period. It's people around here don't really realize how long mariah's been in the music industry compared to some of todays "cheap artists"! How can anyone compare her music to anyone. it's unique. Only stupid "people" would compare her music. So Go out and look for this album. Listen to it and see. would you buy Britney's trash IN THE ZONE or would you buy J.Lo's trash The Reel Me. I think we can see which one we'll buy. It's up to you. I'm just here to make a good comparison between good music and crap music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mariah Achieves Greatness And Looks Good Doin It!, May 25 2004
By
Pedro Tejada (West Palm Beach,FL,USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Butterfly (Audio CD)
Long story short:Mariah and Tommy divorce,Mariah writes about it,Mariah makes the best effort of her career to this day.I know what you Mariah skeptics are thinking:"Can Mariah really make a great album?"But this album can even make skeptics turn into Mariah fans.First of all,the lyrics are simply beautiful, and while they are a tad bit too safe, they are still from Mariah's heart and of course, mostly directed towards her rocky relationship with Columbia CEO Tommy Mottola. But the best song lyrically on here is not about Mariah's relationship with Mottola;"Close My Eyes",which took Mariah four years to write,is about Mariah's rough childhood and is undoubtedly the most beautiful song on this album, and the four years were worth it.Other notable writing includes the sad yet true "Outside" and the tearjerking title track. And,like everyone knows,Mariah uses tons more R&B and hip-hop on this album, and this really is Mariah's best work to date,producing-wise."Babydoll" is great in it's unique R&B/Funk sound, and "Breakdown" is definitely one to dance to,which is weird for being a Mariah song."Fourth of July" is also a song to love. And,sure, most of the album has ballads like every other Mariah album, but unlike Mariah's previous albums, you can't help but feel that the ballads have more of an urban feel to them, two examples being again the funky "Babydoll" and her best cover yet of Prince's "The Beatufiul Ones(featuring than famous Dru Hill",which is undoubtedly the best ballad on the album, next to the latin-guitar flavored heartbreak anthem "My All",which still remains one of Mariah's best singles to date. But the track that is above the rest(the highlight) is the unbelievably catchy "Honey(co-produced by now-.P.Diddy)",which is really my personal favorite and every critic's favorite track off the album,as far as I'm concerned. The album may take a lot of samples, but it is still a greatly original song for Mariah, and has a fun,upbeat,hip-hop flavored sound to it.And,of course,Mariah's voice is great AND she doesn't exaggerate her voice as much,a lot more vulnerability and beauty was put into this album,vocal-wise.Fans will love the sexy cooing Mariah does on this album(i.e.,the wonderfully sensual "Fourth Of July")

Though most of the album's producing is amazing, some of the producing is a little off("Outside" sounds a little two-bit;"Fly Away{Butterfly Reprise}" really does the capture Mariah trying a little too hard;"Babydoll" may have great producing, but also does have a little piece of two-bit in it,as well). And one of the songs sometimes slips into the category of "sleepers"("Whenever You Call" is very bland).Instead of those minor stepbacks, this is still a great album!

The Verdict:Mariah's yearning to be her own artist and person(while wearing clothes that should be worn privately) leads to creating one of the greatest albums of it's decade.Deserves to be an "Essential Recording(Amazon.Com!)"And,like I said, lookin' good,Mariah!

Recommended:Yes
