Joy Division's second and final album, Closer, is one of the most harrowing albums ever written, and easily very depressing and funereal. I can't listen to it now and enjoy it, as much as it is inspiring to express your inner pain so beautifully and artistically. I listen to it as more of an ambient piece or an observational work of a life on the verge of complete collapse.

It has been said that Ian Curtis' girlfriend (or wife) said that Closer sounded a lot like a Genesis record. As much as their initial love for high energy punk as well as David Bowie's "Berlin Trilogy," Joy Division inadvertantly did create a Genesis-style concept album about the events and emotions leading to Ian Curtis' suicide in May 1980, months before this album hit shelves. However, Joy Division manages to avoid the cliches of a rock opera (particularly those like Genesis' Lamb Lies Down on Broadway or even The Who's rock operas), particularly with no surreal or austere plot, off-rhythms, theatrics and 10 minute dramatic extravaganzas. Instead, the sound of Closer is cold, clinical, dreary and at times, disturbingly beautiful, so thus, no concept story or theatrics are necessary. Instead, a conceptual tension reveals itself through each of the 9 songs.

ATROCITY EXHIBITION:
This could be a reference to Ian Curtis' epilepsy and how it affected his performances (" For entertainment they watch his body twist/Behind his eyes he says: I still exist"), or his distaste for what people consider entertainment. Events such as bullfighting and pro wrestling are in question in terms of "Killing for a prize" but it could also be a suicidal reference or a decay in Curtis' mental health, since his seizures onstage took a toll on him physically and mentally. As for the "mass murder on a scale you have never seen" could also reveal his private anguish.

ISOLATION:
It seems like a reflection of Curtis' epilepsy, the effect it had on his other people and his pain as a result on it. There are also references to an affair he had with someone else and his failing marriage.

PASSOVER:
More pain, and self-deprecation. It also seems like it reveals his thoughts of suicide, and/or the consequences of his affair ("This is a crisis I knew had to come.")

COLONY:
Severe marital problems are plaguing Ian's life at this point, and he feels that he is alone in a colony of failure, illness and lack of security.

A MEANS TO AN END:
"I put my trust in you" epitomizes this song. Probably more relationship problems with his wife or friends.

HEART AND SOUL:
This is where the album and the story gets overwhelmingly somber and dark. It contains more references to his affair and marriage("Instincts that can still betray us /A journey that leads to the sun /Soulless and bent on destruction /A struggle between right and wrong") and his lack of forgiveness, presumably from both parties, him and his wife ("I'd humbly ask for forgiveness/A request well beyond you and I"). He also seems to acknolwedge the fact that the marriage may be irreperable ("Foundations that lasted the ages/Then ripped apart at their roots"). It also shows his destructiveness, his mortality and his thoughts of suicide ("Existence-well what does it matter?"). In my opinion, he was torn between living, having his marriage crumble, and face a life of bitterness and illness or killing himself and damning his soul for his sin (suicide). One of them had to be sacrificed ("Heart and soul/One will burn"). His birthday was on July 17th, so he was a Cancer. Cancers naturally are sensitive people, resistent to change and chaos, so since Curtis probably had that personality, he ultimately chose to "burn" his soul since living would questionably destroy his sweetness or whatnot.

24 HOURS:
This was probably crucial to Ian's suicide, since he was looking for an easy way out of his pain and suffering, since this "treatment takes too long," probably referring to the barbituates he took for his epilepsy or marriage counseling. He saw no other way out probably. Musically, this song is also critical to the plot, since the 6/8 frenzy of the verse could reflect Ian's thoughts, which probably were of panic, hopelessness and anxiety, and the ending section could represent the actual suicide.

THE ETERNAL:
"Procession moves on, the shouting is over
Praise to the glory of loved ones now gone
Talking aloud as they sit round their tables
Scattering flowers washed down by the rain."
Musically, it sounds like a funeral procession, and probably represents the memorial service for the fallen. This song is overwhelmingly dismal, and could bring up the unanswered questions on why one would kill himself ("No words could explain, no actions determine").

DECADES:
It closes off the album beautifully, yet just as hopeless and bleak as it started. It could represent an outsider's view of his personality, and how his illness affected his personality, epitomized during the first two verses, especially "Knocking the doors of Hell's chambers."

That's my analysis of the underlying concept of Joy Division's "Closer." Real pain, hopelessness, self-pity, mental and physical illness, and crumbling relationships, leading to one final act of self destruction and supposed closure within the tortured soul, yet opening wounds for everyone around him, including those who listen to this. There has never been a more depressing record than "Closer" and it is post-punk's magnum opus.

Some are fascinated with connecting this CD to lead singer Curtis's suicide, and as a result, often elevate this disc beyond its actual merit.

There are very good songs, here, but also some filler. The music tends to be repetative and indulges in gloom in a way that appears to be obsessive, and without the possibility of redemption. Some of this is likely due to the youth of the song-writer & lead singer.

In sum, a good and sometimes engaging CD, like this band more generallly, has been elevated past its actual merits due to the untimely death of Mr. Curtis. To some extent it is human nature; but more than 20 years after the fact, it is a bit much.

Cheers.

Amen brother!

Now the review.

I was just trying to come up with an opening phrase that could collect the greatness of this album, and I couldn't. That's how great this album is. Each song complements the mood of the album perfectly, from the hypnotic jungle drums of Atrocity Exhibition and the instantly accesable synths of Isolation, to the long and jaw dropping Twenty-Four Hours and Decades, this album could not be better.

Ok let me first state this is a wonderful album and a wonderful band....but i am writing this more because i was disgusted by "A music fan"'s review titled 'Depressing!'

i cant believe anyone could suggest 'i'm happy they ditched the singer...' He killed himself, and if you said that to the guys in New Order i think they'd be quite pissed at you...i'm bafled anyone could say that....

5.0étoiles sur 5 !, Juil 14 2004
This review is from: Closer (Audio CD)
this was the first joy division album i bought, at first, i was "eh" with it, but then after a few listens i was addicted. and knowing the fact that ian curtis hanged himself not long after the production of the album gives this record life. all the tracks are placed in an organized order, great beginning, and descending into a great end. although the debut "unknown pleasures" may be a little better, this record is still extremely good. joy division is one of those bands that has it's 15 minutes of fame and then ends, and i have much respect for those bands.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Into The White, Juil 12 2004
This review is from: Closer (Audio CD)
This one time when I was partying with this buddy of mine and a bunch of others, we were partying like a bizatch, drinking pints and pints of yagermeister. At the party they had a booming stereo hookup, and me and my friend were all like badass. So I like had my carrying case with me and I popped in Joy Division's Closer for everyone to hear. Boy was that a mistake. By the time the first song was over three people had wrote suicide notes and killed themselves and dozens were going to jump off my friend's balcony in a mass suicide because suddenly life just wasn't worth living. This album has that kind of vibe.

Yeah this is definately not something you'd want to play at parties or social gatherings because it would get everybody's spirits way down and you wouldn't want that because the neighbors would tell all their contemporaries that you throw really bad parties and then your membership to the classy club downtown would be denied and your kids would not be able to go to the private school of their dreams.

This album is more or less Ian Curtis's suicide note. He killed himself pretty much right after recording it and the album didn't come out until after he was buried in the ground. Ian Curtis was an excellent songwriter and vocalist, and the rest of the band were excellent musicians. The songs on here are from the darkest realms of post-punk, not a synthesizer in sight, well actually there are synthesizers, but even they are dark and brooding. Everything on this album is tight, not one section feels rushed or lazy. Listening to this album one can only draw the conclusion that The Cure's darker albums owe a lot to Joy Division. Songs like Heart and Soul and A Means To an End sound like something directly off one of The Cure's better albums. Of course that fat dude from The Cure would never place any credit where it's due. Highlights from the album include "Isolation", which has the coolest synth line out of anything from the seventies, "Heart and Soul", which has Ian Curtis's voice manipulated by effects to make him sound like some kind of hologram or robot or something, and "Twenty-Four Hours" that starts out drudgy but explodes into a canon of despair and frustration. I'd say that Closer is pretty much the quintisential depressing album. Ian Curtis will be missed.

5.0étoiles sur 5 The First Album of the 80s, Juil 1 2004
Par James Wheeler (Atlanta, GA United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires

This review is from: Closer (Audio CD)
When Ian Curtis hanged himself on the eve of Joy Division embarking on their first US tour, he effectively extinguished the flame of the 70s in much the same manner that Kent State and Altamont concluded and silenced the 60s, robbing all momentum that had been gained. Consider Joy Division's wholly original synthesis of the power of punk with the pulse of disco as its musical framework injected with visionary lyrics and then consider that, since punk and disco so drastically changed the musical landscape now nearly 30 years ago, there have been no new musical forms other than rap. Ian Curtis strived for beauty and love and understanding but was too often confronted with horror. He lacked a common language and felt too deeply. Ian Curtis allowed us to take an intense journey from a comfortable distance by exposing his soul to us. Heart and Soul - one will burn. Closer is one of the ten greatest rock albums of all time.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Brilliance, Juil 1 2004
This review is from: Closer (Audio CD)
This CD is perfect in every way. Joy Division take pure beauty and expression manages to warp it in a plastic disk. Something rarely seem by the crap the spews from the industry today. Trust me I used to listen to it but this band knocked me aback with its light and picked me up comforting me in its embrace. At first listen nothing will get through but give the disk time and it reveal true elegance, especially with the songs "The Eternal" & "Decades." Give time I guaranty you will love this band. Also check out the first and equally amazing "Unknown Pleasures."

5.0étoiles sur 5 I always come back to Closer, Mai 30 2004

This is hands down, the most harrowing, cryptic and most beautiful album I've ever heard. Ian Curtis' voice isn't a pretty one, yet his amazing lyrics captivate me like none other. I bought this album after hearing a lot of good things and on first listen I was thinking to myself "what the hell is this?" But like most things beautiful, it took a while for me to "get it", and once I got over the monotonous drumming and the somewhat out of place techno beats I realized that this is one of my favorite albums. Written only months before Ian's tragic death his lyrics almost foreshadow his fate. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

What to describe this as, is very hard to do. While there was a definate 80's sound here there was also something entirely different and prevoking. What an amazing emotional triumph on this album i thought at first listen. Then after a while I thought that there was a real sick twist on the songs. At least on some of the up beat catchier songs. Being that they are up beat and really sad, that's sick and I love it.
As far as a work of artistic music peice goes, this is the master piece that makes me feel like that there is no hope for new musicians. I must thank Ian for the most amazingly sad but influential album ever released. Even though his death was so involved with this album, one can simply just listen and flow themselves with the music and feel the emotion. I definately recomend this extraordinary album.
Thanks for reading.
