I am a Beck fan no doubt, but this album gets listened to less and less by me. After playing it for a few years now, I realized that I really only like 3 songs from it: "Sexx Laws", "Mixed Bizness", and "Debra". The thing is, those songs are absolutely amazing! But the rest has just become noise to me. Some of the other tracks are good, just not real good. I can't get rid of this because of those three songs, "Mixed Bizness" is just insane, and "Debra" has the smoothest groove, and funniest lyrics. Get this used, or pick up "Mellow Gold", or "Sea Change".

5.0 out of 5 stars come dance with me, July 4 2004

This is one of the most enticing albums that have ever graced my ears. All tracks on the album are standouts, all could be singles. Of course, favorites cannot be avoided, but even these seem to swim in the great bombastic dance album that is "Midnight Vultures". Songs like "Mixed Bizness", "Sexx Laws", and "Debrah" simply outdo themselves. This album takes me to a place and time where contemporaries would include Dianna Ross, James Brown, and Run DMC. I'm shoved about by this music willingly, from one era to the next. I never lose my energy, and neither does Beck.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice, Jun 21 2004

I can understand why people get scared off, they're trying to take this album too seriously. It's not about beautiful music and deep lyrics. It's about funky bass, horn - everything - lines, sex, and anything that rhymes. Listen to Hollywood Freaks and you'll understand: Hot milk/Mmmm...tweak my nipple/Champagne and ripple/Shamans go cripple - why would you even try to take this seriously? Just sit back and enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars an entire album of "Where it's At", Jun 1 2004

This review is from: Midnite Vultures (Ltd.Ed) (Audio CD)
Ok. "Where it's at" was a good tune. But an entire album in the same style? That is basically what this is. Does it work? Not really. This record is average at best compared to Mellow Gold or Odelay.

Die-hard Beck fans only need apply. I am a Beck fan, and I don't really like this. I highly suggest listening to this before you buy it. If you are expecting anything like Mellow Gold or Odelay, you will be dissapointed.

Beck's 4th album is really exceptional for the most part but some songs taint the beauty of Midnite Vultures. While Beck in the past has touched on several music genres, Midnite Vultures gets to the '70s funk side of Beck. The first song, 'Sexx Laws' is the highlight of the album. It's one of those songs you just have to dance to, no matter what you're doing. The next two songs live up to the awesome funkiness of this album.

But then comes the low point of Vultures. 'Get Real Paid' & 'Hollywood Freaks' tap into the hip-hop side of Beck with terrible results. If there is one genre Beck shouldn't try to tap into as a ridiculously talented music artist, it's hip-hop.

But (thankfully) those are the only two songs on the album that fall into that category. The album finishes off beautifully with high points at 'Peaches and Cream', 'Milk & Honey', & 'Pressure Zone'.

Beck taps into new genres with every album. The '70s funk influence on this album shows the unsung genius of Beck and with the exception of the two tainted songs, Midnite Vultures is yet another great Beck album.

5.0 out of 5 stars My First New Favorite Record in 22 Years, April 5 2004

Turn off the lights, turn on the Vultures, and you will find yourself dancing like the first caveman who ever stumbled on a boom box. If this music does not make you dance, you are in a wheelchair. For 22 years, Talking Heads' More Songs About Buildings and Food was my favorite record. Farewell old fave. AWESOME!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pressure zone is enough for me, Mar 9 2004

You could say this isn't a true Beck CD, but I would then challenge you to define what is true Beck. I've heard this album compared to Bowie's "Young Americans", because both were trashed for producing a sound that alienated the fans. The truth is that if you're a die-hard Beck fan or even a fan of older Prince, you should definately check this out. As a whole, it is probably his weakest album, but their are definately some stand-out tracks:
Sexx Laws and Mixed Business are the trulyfunky tracks of the bunch
Nicotine and Gravy is a great slow-burning track
Peaches and Cream has a great guitar riff and good falsetto
Songs 7-10, I believe are the core of the album, although they sound more like they belong on Odelay
Pressure Zone is my favorite track from this CD; it combines a great guitar riff with cool rhythyms and crazy lyrics

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Beck cd, Oct 1 2003

I love this cd. I also have Sea Change and Odelay, but this one is more funky and upbeat. The main theme of the cd is sex, apparent in the songs Sexx laws and Mixed Bizness. He sings with funky tunes and crazy lyrics, "I met you at JCPenney, I think you said your name was Jenny." Although, this cd strays a bit from his normal style, it's definately welcome. All the songs aren't as depressing as "Sea Change." Instead it's great to listen to before heading out at night.

i have a love/hate relationship with this album. i hope to god this is NOT the album that people think of when they think of beck. yikes that is scary. sadly some people do. yep that's sad. to tell the truth if i didn't know any better and alone knew him for this i wouldn't think he was anything special. lucky for me i know better than that. this album really hurt beck's credibilaty as an artist. this alone makes this album kinda a sad listen. it's not beck's best album by a long shot but it's really a nice album anyway that really grows on you after a while. i hate the fact that this album hurt beck's image. but i do like the music on here for the most part and the last 3 tracks on here are really nice. this album may very well prove that beck is not playing with a full deck of cards. lol. but hey i like him for that too.
