3.0 out of 5 stars When good actors make average movies...
This film gets three stars based on the actors in it and the fact that if you don't try to look to deep into it it is reasonably entertaining. But, ultimately, this is a very average film. Cusack and Beckinsale have both done far better work and no doubt will do better work in the future.

Kate Beckinsale's charater is big believer in fate, so when she and Cusack meet...

2.0 out of 5 stars Leave logic at the door., Dec 15 2008

This movie definitely has its moments; the premise and playful banter through the first quarter of the film are charming and hold up well. However, the plot holes really start to show through the rest of the film; if these two are suddenly so desperate to find each other (and leave their relationships in doing so) in New York after their first mingle, then why were they so eager to test fate and leave each other sans numbers or names? Eugene Levy gives a wonderful turn to hold up the comedy throughout the midsection of this film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Connect the dots, Jun 6 2004

OK, so you know how this movie will end. A guy and a girl meet each other under weird circumstances, fall in love and meet years later because they are meant for each other. Like so often.

but it's not bad at all, the clues are very funny and even though it's too absurd it is still funny. A nice 'romantic comedy'.

There are some classic moments that couples must have done before or after seeing this movie. Like connecting the dots (freckles) on a girl's arm... sigh... do soulmates really exist?

This is the best romantic comedy I have ever seen! This is really a one to watch!
This is a movie that really gives you a lovely love feeling inside of you! With the jazz music at the background, and showing the beautiful romantic side of New York makes this the most lovely romantic movie for me! (And of course Kate Beckinsale) The extras on the DVD are very good to give you an inside look of making the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance, Destiny, and Some Humor, April 19 2004
This review is from: Serendipity (Widescreen) (DVD)
If you love romantic comedies, you will love this. In this movie, two people meet in a new york department store, have a wonderful time, and then leave it to fate to have them meet again. A few years later, they are both about to get married to different people and go on last minute searches to find each other and get closure before tying the not. They often cross paths and just barely miss each other, which can be pretty funny, and jonathan's (john cusac's) best man is hilarious. A must see.

2.0 out of 5 stars AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT...., Mar 10 2004

...this movie about fate, destiny and whathaveyou falls on its head.

Like a countless other missed romantic "comedies", it tries to capitalize on the idea of two people searching for each other, only to find each other in the last moments of the film. Sadly, it fails on the most basic level to entertain, leaving the viewer with nothing but a more-than-mild case of hatred for the protagonists and a sick feeling in their stomachs.

The characters never make it to more than shallow and self-centered, willing to mislead their fiancee's, lie, even cheat, for just one chance to have, not just happiness, but ultimate happiness. The humor is never quite funny. The acting looks like, well, acting. The situations are so implausible they're almost idiotic.

If these characters had shown any honesty, any decency towards the jilted parties, perhaps it would have been a different movie. Instead the characters seem to go out of their way to pile lie upon lie, deception upon deception. Cusack, who lent a soulless contract killer likability in Grosse Point Blank, is surprisingly flat here.

The soundtrack is pretty neat though, but otherwise a fairly bland flop.

Fantastic. Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack have fantastic chemistry although it was technically for a short period. Light-hearted romantic comedy with superb supporting cast from Jeremy Priven and Molly Shannon. This is one of those movies that flow so quickly you can't believe it's over. It's clearly one of my all-time favorites now. I believe that things do happen for a reason although we still have a level of control. The movie really inspires. Kate Beckinsale is wonderful to watch. Her facial expressions and subtle behavior during the scenes were phenomenal. I look forward to her other films. She has won a fan for life.

One side comment with respect to Greg Hammond's review about lacking content. There is a snowflake that can be selected on the DVD to reveal another screen which contains the additional material he thought was lacking. Ironically, I found it serendipitiously! It's not a clear selection on the DVD but it's there! What a pleasant surprise! Great stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Chick Flick, Jan 24 2004
This review is from: Serendipity (Widescreen) (DVD)
I have to admit I am a softie when it comes to chick flicks but everyone should like this one because it is so good it is one of the few chick flicks in which I actually cry at the end of. The story is that these two people Jonathon (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) meet at a store when it is about to close and both want to buy the last glove in the store so they both buy it and then go off and have the most romantic night ever ice skating, eating ice cream, talking, then she decides that if they are meant to be together then something will happen she gets change for a dollar and the dollar has his name and phone number on it and she sells a book to a used bookstore that has her name and phone number in it. But can these to people destined to be together find each other again only time and fate will tell. I would recommend this to people eleven and older because this movie does have a little sexual dialouge but nothing to bad and some language other than that it is fine for everyone to watch. I hope that this review has helped you in making a decision about this movie.
