Two Amazing Films, for one amazing price!,
This review is from: Godzillavs Destroyah/Godzillavs. Spacegodzilla (DVD)
Godzilla VS Space godzilla features amazing Kaiju (Giant Monster) Action, as Godzilla and Space Godzilla (A godzilla made out of cells ramed through a black hole, a white hole and a bunch of other random scientific sounding crap that no one cares about) duke it out with the help of MOGERA, the J.G.S.D.F Giant Robot (Okay to be Honest MOGERA does not really help that much.)One of my favoraite parts of this film, is that that baby Godzilla freak DIES! Hooray! Rejoice! Praise the Lord! We not only get some Good City Destruction scenes, but we get some good monster fights. Godzilla VS Destroyer - One of the All time best Godzilla films, it is the last in the Heishi Arc, and let me tell you, this movie is sad, not meaning its a bad movie, but it actually brought a tear to my eye. The special effects are very good, and BURNING GODZILLA LOOKS COOL! Even the Godzilla JR. in this is not bad, and is quite different from that dang Baby Godzilla from the other film in this pack. Overall I say: BUY THIS SET!

Well, I guess I'll review the movies and then I'll tackle the DVD. This DVD is really a mixed bag.OK, Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla is a film I personally like. The SFX are freaking terrible, but I love Spacegodzilla and I also like Godzilla's costume. Cool. The SFX really bring the film down though and it's really distracting. From Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2, Baby Godzilla was a mutant dinosaur, which is what it was. In this film, they try and make him "cute." And he is cute, but it isn't very realistic at all (although the whole concept of Godzilla isn't realistic, but you get my drift.) Spacegodzilla's costume is AMAZING, but the crystals on his back look like two icecubes. The acting is pretty bad, but that's what I watch Godzilla for: The totally ludicrous storylines, bad FX (but in some cases the FX are pretty good,) and the OK acting. I give this movie 3 and a half out of 5 G vs. Destroyah is a great movie. I love the costumes, I love Destroyah, I also like Godzilla Junior. Good movie. Bad acting. 4 1/2 out of 5 I hate the video quality and the sound quality on this DVD! It is really depressing when a movie that is only from 1995 is in such a condition, although it could be worse, it could have also been better. Since Sony has released G vs. The Sea Monster which is from about 20 years before this one and it is IN WAY BETTER CONDITION. I want Sony to release vs. Spacegodzilla and vs. Destoryah on SEPERATE DVDs IN BETTER CONDITION, RIGHT NOW!!!!!!! All in all, this DVD gets 2 out of 5 stars because it has no Special Features, bad quality in a bad package. Avoid and wait for Sony to release these on seperate discs with better quality.

This review is from: Godzilla Vs.Destroyah (VHS Tape)
This is the last film of the Heisei line of Godzilla films, and is awesome as such. While it pales in comparison to the original "Gojira" and 1999's "Gamera 3," it is certainly one of my favorite Godzilla movies. In this movie, a burning mad (literall) Godzilla arrives at, and destroys, Hong Kong (not Japan, for the first time in the Heisei series), while Akira Ifukube's awesome music plays in the background. From the opening sequences alone (including the title sequence), you know that you are in for something different. The next scenes until the arrival of Jr. in Tokyo follows the story of where Godzilla will strike next, what happened to Little Godzilla from the last two movies, and what is up with the giant red crab-like creatures attacking Tokyo. When the crabs converge into one giant creature, Godzilla Jr. arrives in Tokyo and the two fight. Jr. is badly wounded, but he manages to (seemingly) kill Destroyer. Then, Godzilla arrives and communicates with his son until Destroyer is reborn in an awesome scene. Destroyer then grabs his first foe (Jr.) and proceeds to drop him from hundreds of meters up onto a building, mortally wounding him. Godzilla mourns the death of his son, until Destroyer attacks him from behind, laughing at Godzilla's sadness (making Destroyer the only Godzilla, if any monster, foe that you truly start to hate). After this, an epic battle takes place that isn't just a beam war like the previous few movies were. Finally, Godzilla hits 1200 degrees and dies as Destroyer is finally killed by a freezer attack. Ifukube's haunting and powerful music along with a silence of all other noise creates a powerfully sad scene. However, through the radioactive fog after the meltdown, we suddenly see the silhouette of Godzilla Jr. in his final form, and then the movie ends. My only complaint about the movie itself are the crab vs. police scenes that are obviously a rip-off of similar scenes from "Alien." Other than this, the movie is good, with passable SFX (except for several crab sequences). My biggest complaint about this video release is that it cuts off the end credits (in the original movie, it shows more scenes from "Gojira" and then scenes from all the Heisei movies while playing to another Ifukube masterpeice). Other than this, the movie is great. I highly recommend it.

I own these two on DVD. Godzilla versus Destoroyah I little better because there is more military envolvement. Other than launch Moguera the defense department doe snot do much to counter Space Godzilla. These two have towns of destuction great special effects. The two most powerfull enemy godzilla fights in this series. Destroyah have been created by the oxygen destroyer has some powerful deadly attack. Like its laser horn which can slice through godzilla flesh. I like these together deals they are fun worth it. This is one of the good films. If hope strong suggest you do not she Godzilal versus King Kong or The Son of Godzilla fort they are the worst one sin the series

This to me will be Godzilla's last stand.I'm aware of the newer installments, but I can not and will not accept a lifeless CGI Godzilla. Especially those blank yellow eyes. Suitmation is the only way to go.When godzilla roars his last roar I had a lump in my throat. Also due to Akira Ifukube's brilliant score. But was quickly cheered up when they presented the most awesome looking Godzilla in the entire series.Needless to say how disappointed I was when TOHO did not follow this coarse and instead made the lousy GODZILLA 2000, which absolutely sucked. Even though suitmation is used, the look did not say GODZILLA!! it seemed more to say (frog with long tail and jagged spines on back) Destoroyah is definately as impressive an enemy the big G ever had. When TOHO comes to it's senses and makes Godzilla movies the way they used to (like this one) and use more of Maesto Ifukube's score. Then I'll be glad to give them my hard earned american dollar they can convert to YEN.Till then MY TITLE STANDS.If I have one gripe about this movie. It's the abrupt end credits.Just when I'm getting into the best version of the Godzilla theme "WHACK" they cut me off.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (3 stars) - Several Godzilla cells mutate in outer space and the monstrous threat of SpaceGodzilla is born! The (at the time) next to last Godzilla movie is a turgid affair. The plot (which isn't half bad) is poorly paced and the special effects range from above average to laughable (the styrofoam asteroids are just horrifying to behold). Strictly for purists.Godzilla vs Destroyah (5 stars) - This is one of my favorite Godzilla movies of all time and a wonderful good-bye to the Big G - who was going to move to American to make movies. Needless to say, he returned home after discovering that Hollywood had no idea how to treat him with anything close to respect. This calculated farewell has the oxygen destroyer from the very first movie mutating some prehistoric crustacean to city dwarfing size. Godzilla (who is beginning to meltdown) and Godzilla Junior show up to squash said threat. This is old school kaiju fun, and a perfect Godzilla movie for fans to introduce the unconverted with pride. Highest recommendation.

This DVD is a must have for Godzilla vs Destroyer alone, the best in the series IMO. The reason this get's five stars is because GvsD is awesome and you get Godzilla vs Space Godzilla as well which isn't that bad of a G-Film either. This movie is great if you have widescreen TV or not it's a shame that Tri-Star didn't release it's previous Double Godzilla DVD set like this. I'm not going to tell you anything about the movies because many people already have, I am going to tell you to get this if you don't already have it.

A great Godzilla film and a terrible one in an O.K. package,

Sony/TriStar does a better job on this double-feature disc of two of the 1990s Godzilla films than they did on the awful disc of "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth." This time the films are in widescreen and stereo. Unfortunately, they are still dubbed (and very poorly, too), and the end credits are still chopped off, but I can at least recommend buying this disc for its improved visual and audio quality. (In a side note, Sony/TriStar has just made available three of the recent Godzilla films in widescreen editions with 5.1 sound and a choice of English dub or Japanese with subtitles: "Godzilla vs. Megaguirus," "Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack," and "Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla." They may also release the two film on the this DVD in individual, deluxe packages, so you may want to wait a bit before deciding to pick up this disc.) However, I can only recommend one film on this disc, the terrific "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah," which brings a conclusion to the 1990s 'Heisei' series of Godzilla films in an apocalyptic story that links back to the original 1954 "Godzilla." Godzilla's radioactive heart has started to melt down, a condition that threatens to destroy the entire planet. The military scrambles to find a way to prevent the end of the world, while psychic Miki tries to track down Godzilla's son, now a tough teen who looks like a half-sized Godzilla. And on top of all this, a new creature has suddenly appeared, born out of the weapon that killed the original Godzilla back in 1954: the mutating crustacean/dragon beastie Detoroyah. The action is plentiful, as are the effects, and the film just thunders along. It's everything you want in a Godzilla film. Godzilla Jr. facing the crab-leg version of Destoroyah is one of the great monster fights, the finale at the airport is brilliant, and the ending is heartbreaking. It's a great way to end the second Godzilla series. If this film stood on its own, I'd give it five stars, easily. In fact, it's best that you don't think of this disc as a double-feature at all, but a single disc containing "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah," with "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla" as a bonus feature. Because "SpaceGodzilla" is AWFUL. Made right before "Detoroyah" by a new director who came out of Japanese teen films, "SpaceGodzilla" is boring and utterly silly. Godzilla Jr. looks like Barney the dinosaur, SpaceGodzilla is a ridiculously lumbering thing, and the military's new super-robot, MOGUERA (based on a robot from the 1957 film "The Mysterians"), looks like some kid's transformer toy, only not as well constructed and with Woody Woodpecker's head. The plot is sloppy -- something about SpaceGodzilla imprisoning Godzilla Jr. while a conspiracy almost wrecks the anti-Godzilla team called G-force -- and the performers look bored. The big action sequences seem to go on forever while nothing happens. The finale is just Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla standing far away and roaring at each other, while the military fiddles endlessly with their useless machines. The special effects are awful and lazy as well. Not even Godzilla fans will be able to tolerate this film for long. On it's own, "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla" is worth only one star, easily. So I'll have to average my rating out and give this package three stars. I recommend this disc for "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah," which is great even in dubbed format. Watch the other film, sure, but think of it as a bonus not factored into the price. You'll feel better that way, and $16.99 is a pretty fair price for a good, widescreen, stereo Godzilla film. (But keep your fingers crossed for even better editions in the future.) |
