What's my motivation to buy this dvd?, Jui 15 2004
Why does this dvd have an english (dubbed) soundtrack only. It was obviously made in german (like Das Boot), so why no german soundtrack available? Surely some people would prefer to watch the film in the original german soundtrack with english subtitles. But no subtitles either! What were the people who compiled this dvd thinking! Why not include the original soundtrack. Surely this was available. One of the best parts of the film, a scene showing the platoon listening to a speech by Hitler (the actual recording) over an improvised radio, also has no subtitles! So good luck to anyone who would have been interested in knowing what the speech was about. If ever there was a film that could benefit from rudimentary features like a choice of language or subtitles - this is it. Probably one of my favourate war films. Probably the worst DVD in my collection.

Complete rubbish, Jui 26 2003
Par Un client
Das Boot had a couple of nonsense scenes but generally was well done and reasonably accurate. I suspect a number of people will buy Stalingrad in the belief its of similiar quality.Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. This travesty seems to obsessed with rewriting history which I'll get to later. Lets first deal with the....battle scenes. One scene which takes place in a factory shows a badly wounded russian staggering towards a frightened german in a strange herman munster fashion. The german riddles him with bullets from his pistol but cannot stop his progress. Then another german comes from behind and kills the russian with an axe. He then stutters "I just [urinated] my pants". The other german responds "So did I". The whole scene is like something from a really bad b-horror film. There are several such scenes. The highlight battle scene is a confrontation between a small number of german troops dug in the snow and a dozen or so russian tanks. This scene is like most of the rest in that its just not believable. Good battle scenes might give this flick some value but its not there. The creator apparently has watched to many Oliver Stone films and doesn't believe historical accuracy is important. For example, the film portrays the upper echelon of the german army as living the high life in some cozy hideaway while the grunts freeze their you know what off. Actually, almost every German general in WW2 right up to army group level went onto the battlefield himself. A shocking number of generals and officers were killed in action. Finally, this film has all the usual new age copouts. A german who behaved quite rationally unexpectedly commits suicide in one scene because, you know, war is insanity.

Stalingrad virtually fails on every level it intends., Sep 1 2002
Joseph Vilsmaier's Stalingrad poses an interesting question: do laughably bad battle sequences ruin an anti-war film? The answer, it depends. Battle scenes take up only a small portion of Stalingrad's running time (two sequences, adding up to just under fifteen minutes total), so these cheesy segments alone can't really bring the film down to complete [garbage]. But considering how the film fails on every other level, the battle scenes are really just another icing on the cake that dooms Stalingrad as a war film debacle. The story is pretty basic and does little to distinguish itself from most war movies out there. We follow a German platoon as they head into Stalingrad, and follow them through each deadly situation they encounter. Each of these men begin as respectable citizens, but by the end, virtually lose their grip on humanity. Actually, the title might mislead some viewers who think they're going to be seeing a film about the bloody battle of Stalingrad. Like Enemy at the Gates (a mediocre but superior production), the city is used as a backdrop for the catastrophic tides of war. What's wrong with the movie? Okay, just for a moment, ignore the fact that the violence looks like something out of a 60's spaghetti western (the gore wounds look like rubber, the bullet wounds actually sometimes spew sparks instead of blood, so on and so forth). Now we focus on all the other scenes, which as some viewers have noted, are meant to create a hopeless, downbeat feeling. But director Vilsmaier has yet to learn that for such a depressing edge to work, you have to populate your film with three-dimensional characters that are worth caring for, and Stalingrad has none (keep in mind, one guy comes close). Stalingrad displays virtually none of the same qualities as immeasurably superior character-driven war films such as The Killing Fields or Gallipoli, though it certainly aspires to. The acting is second-to-third-rate, with characters who do little to define and differentiate themselves from everyone else. Let's see, there's the up-and-coming Lieutenant, the Guy Who's Afraid His Wife is Cheating on Him, and a few other guys who make zero impressions. The actor who plays the Lt., Thomas Kretchsmann, comes close to creating a genuine persona, but he's hampered by a screenplay that replaces real personalities with cliches. Stalingrad features many other terrible aspects, such as the cheap and obvious sets, the grating musical score, and the general feeling that this is a movie, and not a genuine, harrowing experience, probably the most damning flaw the film bears. Rarely for a moment did I actually feel I was in the the thick of the war-torn city streets or the snow-covered tundras, a detachment caused by all the problems I listed throughout the entire review. Despite all that's incredibly wrong with the film, the conclusion almost works. The ending alone, a horrifying display of how seemingly inescapable the second world war was, almost creates visceral emotion on the basis of just how cruel and ironic it is (once again, could have been even more effective with great characters)(see Gallipoli for a truly nightmarish, heartbreaking finale). It's during these last few moments that, finally, Vilsmaier shows a competent hand at direction and shows us what he intended the whole time. It's just too bad it took over two hours to get there, and the trip beforehand isn't worth it.

Yup, it sucks., Juil 18 2002
Par Un client
There's really no other way around it. I viewed this film with very high expectations, and once I was through, I was wondering whether or not I'd seen the Ishtar of German war films. Everything about this film reeks of camp quality, from the horribly comical gore effects to the cheesy acting. The battle scenes are truly among the worst I've ever seen, no thanks to Joseph Vilsmaier's incompetent direction. There have been a lot of comparisons between this and Enemy at the Gates, but really, there's no competition. While I never considered Gates a great movie, it was a decent one with two exceptional performances (Jude Law and Ed Harris) and riveting sniper hunts amidst the ruins of Stalingrad. Still, the best film to feature urban warfare is Black Hawk Down.

Awful, awful, awful., Jui 14 2002
Par Un client
A war movie from the German perspective, Stalingrad is an unfortunate waste of time. Not only does it trivialize the actual battle into looking like a small skirmish, there is little in the way of genuine characterization, powerful drama, and a sense of authenticity. The sets feel enclosed and too small for a movie that strives to be an anti-war epic, the make-up effects on the wounds are horrendous, and the battle scenes are poorly choreographed. There are so many other combat war films out there you can see rather than Stalingrad. If you want a war film from the German perspective, go see Das Boot. If you want great characterization, watch Saving Private Ryan or Platoon. If you want blistering, harrowing, non-stop rampant combat, then go see Black Hawk Down. Stalingrad is just an utter mess.

One of the worst war films I've ever seen., Mars 10 2002
Plotless war film features a group of German soldiers carried from one "harrowing" situation to another. I'm certain war generally has no sense of direction, but this film ambles forever with no point in mind. The battle sequences are laughably bad, the acting is third-rate, and the big emotional finale resonates no emotion whatsoever. Lots of graphic violence, but when you find yourself trying to stifle a chuckle, you know it's not terribly realistic.

What a disappointed movie I ever saw, Mai 14 2001
Par Un client
Stalingrad, was one of the greatest and bloody battle in the history, involved thousands of Aircrafts and Tanks, and million of soldiers. From this movie, you won't see any of those pic, you won't see any German Tiger Tanks, or any great battle, you will find only 2 German half-tracked but non operated, only 10 Russia T-34 tanks but were easily destroyed by 12 poor equipped and exhausted German soldiers. I will say that in 150 mins film long, 135 mins are seeing German soldiers walking around or mumming to each other, even the other 15 mins of fighting are boring and full of non-sense. Compare with Hollywood movie, this Germany made movie is a cheap product, and totally waste of your time. I will recommend others to see this movie if they want to know what is the worst WWII movie. Be honest, I am a real fans of WWII movie, "Saving Private Ryan", "Pearl Harbour", "Eagle has landed", "Kelly's heroes", "Bridge too Far", "D-day" any of those is much better than this one, I would like to give 0 star to this movie, which is a disaster of WWII movie.

So disappointed, Mai 14 2001
Par Un client
Compare with Hollywood movie, the movie is so boring and full of disappointed. Stalingrad, was one of the greatest battle in history, with millions of soldiers, thousands of tanks. If you expected such kinda screen, you are totally wrong. No bloody screen, slaughter pic, I don't see any German Tiger Tank, but only 2 non-operated half-tracked. Also only 8 of T-34 were shown but were totally destoryed by 12 of poor condition, poor equipped German Soldier, it was non-sense. I brought this movie, because I read the recommandation from this board, I was so disappointed. Now I warn others, this movie is only a cheap production and totally waste of your time. Too bad, I will say this movie worth no star from me. I wonder if amzon will post my review, cause it will definately harm their business in selling this boring movie. By the way I am not a 13 kid, I am 40 now.

A terrible, terrible movie!!, Fév 19 2001
What a pathetic attempt to try to make something like "Das Boot". First, the acting: It might not come across when subtitled, but when one listens to the German intonations, the whole movie sounds soooo over-acted. The actors themselves, though considered stars in their (and my) home country, have obviously wasted their talent for what is an overall disappointing piece of film. Yeah, the film: Apparently, this movie marks a return to the "good old days" of post-war German film-making (the 50s), when the role of the German "Wehrmacht" in the war was down-played; essentially, our boys were just naive but otherwise honorable tools in the hands of some bad Nazis. Sorry to spoil the party, but this movie is unacceptable.
