5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Talent Who Left Us Too Soon

Simply said, Ms. Cassidy had a wonderful voice, one that was strong and one that could elicit emotion, all at the same time. She puts her stamp on such standard popular songs like "Kathy's Song," "Ain't No Sunshine," "Time After Time," and "Woodstock." The other songs on the CD are equally amazing.
Get this CD. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Songs We Remember, But Not This Way, Nov 16 2003

Originally, I purchased the album because it had a version of "Time after Time" on it. At the moment I am collecting different versions. Then I put the album on, and when I heard her sing "Kathy's Song" originally by Simon and Garfunkle, I literally started to cry.

And the next song was "Ain't No Sunshine" which I have done by Boney James, Jose Feliciano, DMX, Ray Charles and several others. The album is so well crafted, it is like drinking 500 year old cognac. The smoothness, the feeling of serenity that it gives, especially with songs that are mostly familiar is just too much to pass up.

I recommend it to anyone who likes emotional music done in a purely humanistic manner. Eva has created a true masterpiece with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another classic from a lost treasure, Jun 24 2000

This review is from: Time After Time (Audio CD)
Eva Cassidy was a true original, with a warm, emotional voice that she could wrap around any kind of music - jazz, pop, folk, blues, gospel, you name it. On this CD, she moves seamlessly from the sixties folk of "Kathy's Song", to the sophistocated "At Last"; from a haunting cover of Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time", to the quintessential Joni Mitchell anthem, "Woodstock". Each is different, and she makes each uniquely her own. Cassidy had an uncanny way of achieving an astounding level of intimacy with her listeners. You'll feel that she's singing each story just for you. Only one cut on the CD, the Boxtops' "The Letter", is unsuccessful, but this rare misstep does not significantly detract from the overall quality of the album.

If you've never heard Eva Cassidy's music, you're missing something special. As marvelous as this CD is, the earlier "Eva By Heart" is even better. And on "Live At Blues Alley", she accomplishes the impossible; she sings "Over the Rainbow" as well as, if not better than, Judy Garland. On that same CD, her rendition of Sting's "Fields of Gold" will leave you breathless.

Buy "Time After Time" now, and make it the first in what will certainly be a collection of CD's by a most extraordinary artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVA and GENIE are the best, July 7 2004
This review is from: Time After Time (Audio CD)
Time after Time is not my favorite Eva album, but I think you should have all of the albums by EVA and Genie.

I would get this one and Songbird and get WILDFLOWERS by GENIE.

This is Eva's best album. "Songbird" is fine but I prefer the songs on this CD. Isn't it amazing that "Time After Time" and "Songbird" have remained ranked so high on Amazon sales and have retained their resale value so well? Maybe not so amazing when you consider the wonder of Eva Cassidy.

3.0 out of 5 stars ...but there needs to be more than the voice, Jan 30 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Time After Time (Audio CD)
I found the reviews for this CD and Ms Cassidy's other recording to be so enthusiastic, I had to listen. I ordered this recording and "Songbird". I will agree she had a great voice. She apparently was able to cover quite a range of musical styles and do all of them well. She had a lot of talent and it's sad it never had a chance to blossom or have a proper vehicle that could have carried it to the success she so richly deserved.

The unfortunate problem with this recording and with her other recordings I have heard is the voice is all there is. She was saddled with some mediocre musicians. The recordings are sometimes muddy and off-balance. There are technical problems in the engineering and these tapes would never have been allowed out of the studio under more professional guidance. There is also an unbalance in the material presented. Most recordings have some common thread or style that allows the music to flow from the first track through to the end. The flow here is not smooth.

Yes, I know the CD's are composed of the archive of material Ms Cassidy recorded prior to her death and that means there will be limitations. But this recording and, with the exception of "Songbird", the others I have heard have so many limitations, it's hard to consider them as anything but a mined archive that ultimately disappoints those interested in good music. "Songbird" sounds better and, because it is a sampler, flows better.

As much as Ms Cassidy's untimely death saddens me, the loss of the possibility of ever hearing her outstanding voice with the respectful recording and professional backing it deserved is even more depressing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy it for "Kathy's Song", Aug 24 2003
By
This review is from: Time After Time (Audio CD)
TIME AFTER TIME is not as instantly likeable as most of Eva's albums. This one takes a few listens to discover the absolute magic of her guitar playing.

Eva's rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's "Kathy's Song" is a real pleasure to listen to - so much so, that you will want to play it over and over and over.

Other highlights on the album include a very haunting version of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock".

I may be the only one that doesn't like her version of "time after time" - but I didnt like Cyndi's either. I guess it's just the song I don't like.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's A Gift To Be Simple, Aug 20 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Time After Time (Audio CD)
I have listened to several of Eva Cassidy's albums over and over. I've studied them, and I've listened to them as background music. Because I'm interested in voice, I've listened closely to how she sounds when she sings with a blues style or with a soft, ballad style. I have to honestly say now that I am much more of a fan of hers when "less is more". This album stands out, in my opinion, over "Songbird" because there are many songs where she is not trying to hard to have "soul". My absolute favorite on this album is "Penny to My Name". Her voice is so beautiful because it is gentle and soft, and she truly speaks for the yearnings of a girl who becomes a woman and must live with the realities of a very drab existence. I love "At Last" and "Time After Time" (which I did catch on "Smallville" as well), and I could mention others, but my wish would be (were I more technically proficient!) to capture all of her soft moments on one CD- "Songbird", "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", the songs I mentioned above, "Kathy's Song", "Fields of Gold" come to mind, I'm sure there are others I have neglected to mention. When she sings some higher notes in a more blues-oriented style, she almost has a harsh tone to her voice, and not necessarily the depth of a woman born into blues.
I love the sweetness and the softness of Eva's rendition of ballads.
