If only I could give him less than one star.
I hate to say it, but I'm forced to agree with Harryhunt up there. Tarkan's music is boring and repeditive, utterly dull and boorish. Even the comparisons with Ricky Martin are just too much - I can't stand his music either, but at least Martin seems to have SOME talent - as misplaced as it is!

I am a local small town DJ always hunting for a unique song... "Sikidim" is one of them. I have a great following, and they trust me to bring them the best. They are confident in my tastes. One wish...if only there were an English version! My friends love this song as it is, but.. If a version exists, please write me @yahoo. Thanks a billion!

5.0 out of 5 stars New Math: 3 "Hots" = 5 ++ Stars in Pasadena Tx., Nov 22 2003

Heard Turkish music for the first-time-ever at a recent festival (bought a Tarkan CD). Yes, believe it or not, a few people in
Pasa (by gosh red neck) dena Texas have a keen appreciation
for quality music regardless of the culture. In my opinion,
this new kid Tarkan's,Universal Latino CD should be a "#1 with a bullit" even here in the good-ole U.S.A. The subtle, yet upbeat, theme of the CD is accutely refreshing (not over dancy yet keeps you fixed on whats gonna happen next). Tarkan's octave range is magnificent. First impressions of the CD - Exotic, Slick, Mesmerizing, Hot, Hot, Hot (3 Hots = 5++ stars in Pasadena!! I have a feeling that before long some producer will seriously promote this young artist stateside. When that day comes, Julio I. and his brats, as well as, Ricky M. and others better be ready for competition!! In discussions about Tarkan, I learned that international music most often is slow in reaching our shores. It was suggested that Cher's "Believe" CD floated around Europe about three years before we got it over here. So go figure!! TARKAN, YOU GO BOY!! AND GOD BLESS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Turkish music!, Jun 25 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tarkan (Audio CD)
You don't have to understand Turkish to give this cd the 5 stars it deserves; the music, the compositions here are just wonderful (+ very emotive and not repetitive as the most dance songs are ). Buy this album in addition to KARMA, you won't be disappointed. Instead, you will enjoy a euphoric musical journey that perfectly blends Turkish music with modern elements and maintains a universal musical language, which really won't require you to speak Turkish at all.

I will also recommend an other Turkish artist, SERTAB ERENER (who won this year's Eurovision Award). Her voice is just mesmerizing, and her songs will sound far more lovelier to those who are not into the energetic dance tunes of Tarkan. Try to get any album she has recorded, I got TURUNCU (meaning "orange") from Amazon.com (very impressive!).

And always look for good original music...

5.0 out of 5 stars You can't help but feel the Universal Music, Nov 26 2002

They say music is felt from the soul. Even though I don't understand fully what he is singing, the beat and the tone of his voice makes you either want to get up in dance or sit with the music flowing over you. I even purchased another CD of his Karma which is mellower but still has that toe tapping beat. I can't wait until America "discovers" this man and he makes a English CD. Thinking of learning Turkish just in case he doesn't. LOVE YOU TARKAN.

4.0 out of 5 stars Turkish pop music -- what's not to like?, Nov 17 2002
By
Beeblebrox (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tarkan (Audio CD)
Like about half of my music collection, I came across Tarkan quite by accident. One day I was looking for more traditional Turkish music online and stumbled upon a song called "Simarik" ... and the rest is history, I suppose.

Tarkan appeals to me, even though by all rights he shouldn't since I dislike most popular music. But, unlike most Western popular music, there is a consistent musical sensibility which imbues all the songs here. With the exception of the dance tracks, which are somewhat interchangeable, there's no question that this is _not_ an album of Western music. Turkish and Middle Eastern music enjoys a structure of scales and tones which is completely different from ours; this shows in many of Tarkan's songs, which is likely why I find the album so engaging.

"Simarik" soars with rai violins and pentatonic scales; "Basina Bela Olurum" evokes the music of Istanbul's Gypsy community heard in smoky cafes; "Ölürüm Sana" likewise wends its way into your ears with sinous scales and rapturous, breathless verses.

One further point bears reflection. The editorial review notes that the album "challeng[es] traditional Islamic values". Don't forget, however, that Turkey is a thoroughly secular society. However, while Turks enjoy a modern Western lifestyle (at least in the larger cities), they, unlike so many other countries, have not abandoned their roots ... and this album is a perfect illustration of the unique cultural balance which Turks have struck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, Sep 23 2002

I first heard Simarik (the kiss-kiss song) on vacation in Istanbul. My friend and I were in a groovy little restaurant where dozens of young Turks were doing karaoke. This song had more rotations than a belly dancer's hips. In the days that followed, we heard it everywhere - on the cab driver's radio, eminating from the Grand Bazaar, and of course the clubs. I didn't figure out who the singer was until I happened to catch a profile of Tarkan on CNN's World Beat. Weird. I went right out and bought the CD and have yet to get tired of it, and that was three or four years ago. (Incidentally, I've heard Tarkan's music on the radio from Germany to Moscow, but I've never heard him anywhere in America but on my CD player.)

I can see how folks compare him to Ricky Martin, the music is very dancable and Tarkan is sexy as heck. However, I don't want to leave the impression that Tarkan's music is a Turkish translation of Latino pop. Tarkan would appeal to many people who would never describe themselves as fans of Latin music, especially those who like to hear something a little bit different and experience a slice of another country's pop culture. Even though I can't understand a word he's saying, he sings with such passion, the language just doesn't matter. It's exotic and familiar at the same time.
