One of the best debut albums I've ever heard,
This review is from: Whoa, Nelly! (Audio CD)
When Nelly Furtado released her debut album in 2000, critics loved it but that was pretty much it. Then she released "I'm Like a Bird" and people started snatching up this album pretty quickly. Many thought she would be a one-hit wonder, but then she released "Turn Off the Light" and scored another big hit. I bought this CD because I heard "...On the Radio" and decided to finally give her CD a chance. This album did not disappoint. I was very impressed by how unique and original this album was, considering it was only her first album. Rather than try to sound like others, she crafted her own unique and instantly identifiable style her first time out. Her voice is as cool and different as her music. 1)Hey, Man!: great song to start the album. I love the violin at the beginning. 8)Party: another good song. I highly recommend this CD. Nelly Furtado blends so many styles of music (pop, trip hop) into this album you can't really put label on it. The only real way to describe it is with one word: fantastic.

Ok, I won't lie. I bought this cd years ago for one song- "I'm like a bird." After I gave the cd a whole listening to, I found that although, "I'm like..." is a great song, it doesn't compare to "Hey Man!" or "Babygirl." I have had 4 people buy this cd after hearing it. The opening violins, to Hey Man, it's just insane. I take this cd everywhere. I can't live without it.

Fun and Sunny,

I am a fan of Nelly Furtado, and i have many reasons why. She is a very beautiful portuguese woman, she can play the guitar, and ALL of her songs are fun and sunny. It reminds me of summer. No other c.d. is this happy, there is always some depressing track. When you hear Nelly Furtado's songs, you just want to get up and dance. There the best.

Better as just a single,

I bought this CD for that ONE song I heard on the radio and liked. If you're looking for others as catchy and good as "I'm Like A Bird", you won't find them here. The rest are slow and boring and I felt robbed that I paid $20 for one song.

Overrated to the extreme, this debut is not bad for a mainstream pop album, but it`s hardly as good as many claim. So Nelly Furtado makes a somewhat interesting mix here, combining diverse influences from hip-hop, bossa nova, trip-hop to fado or R&B. While it works at parts, it still is way too uneven and inconsistent as a whole. Furtado`s voice ranges from exotic and peculiar to tiresome and irritating, delivering a flawed hit-and-miss effort that at least tries to offer something new and refreshing to the current pop scenario. The album has a couple of good moments, like the melodic opener "Hey, Man!", the urban "Trynna Finda Way" or the catchy single "Turn off the Light", while most of the other songs are just curious yet nothing special experiments. Given that "Whoa, Nelly!" is just a debut, it indeed shows some promise, presenting a sometimes appealing roots fusion. It`s also interesting to see how she incorporates her portuguese backgrounds into her music.Deserves a listen, still it`s far from a keeper.

I thought I might enjoy this album.Yet I didn't.I dunno what Nelly F. be smokin' but she needs to puff and pass.I do though like her voice and respect her artmanship. No other producers writing terrible songs for Nelly.Hell no she writes her own.

Well, I think I bought this CD for the same reason everyone else bought it: for 'I'm Like A Bird' and 'Turn Off the Light'. At the time the second single came out (circa fall 2001), I really enjoyed both of them and considered buying her album. Then Nelly disappeared for a while and I almost forgot about her. This past year for my birthday I ended up getting 'Whoa, Nelly!' as a gift. At first I actually enjoyed the cd. I played it for about two weeks but then that was it. It ended up in the dusty part of my CD collection. About a month ago I heard her new single 'Powerless' off her new album 'Folklore'. I thought about buying her new album but then decided I should maybe listen to her old one first. Wow. This album in the most polite way... reeks. I mean, I still like the song 'I'm Like A Bird'. It's the only decent song on here. That and 'Well, Well'. But I can't stand the rest of the cd. Not even 'Turn Off The Light'. Listening to this gives me a headache. People may think she's unique for mixing an unusual combination of latin sounds, hip hop, folk, r&b, and pop. But it's like pouring these sounds into a blender. What you get will not taste too good. Sorry Nelly fans. But this one is for the used CD bin.

When Nelly Furtado first came out, I couldn't stand her voice and image. She seemed like a spoiled-brat with limited singing talent. I changed my mind when I heard "Powerless" and I've been in love with her music ever since. I love her latest album more than this one, but "Whoa, Nelly!" is excellent in its own right. It's a shame her album "Folklore" isn't doing very well! Hopefully she'll be able to maintain a small but strong fanbase for years to come.

I have loved this album, since I first heard "Turn Off the Light" & "I'm Like a Bird" (two of my favorite songs). For a long time, the airwaves and television were permeated with Nelly Furtado's music, and I enjoyed every song, video or performance. Then, when the airplay dwindled, I felt compelled to purchase the album. I have played it, subsequently, more times than I can possibly remember. I love to put the album on while doing housework, or just for ambient music, or to crank it up and just dig the Vibes. I very rarely enjoy an entire album, and normally only like 2-5 songs on a CD. However, I thoroughly enjoy each and every song on Nelly Furtado's album--the music, the vocals (!), the stories, et al. I am looking-forward to purchasing her latest album, as well. I've enjoyed the Launchcast videos, as a preview. Nelly Furtado has a very unique sound--her voice and the amazing fluctuations she can produce are soothing, powerful, emotional and humorous. I can actually see her smile, or grin with sarcasm, etc., as she sings. She obviously poured her emotions into her music. The music, itself, is very catchy. The grooves, vibes and beats stay in my head, lingering afterward. I love this CD. |
