Not their best,

I have been in love with DMB for a while now. I love how their songs are usually half instrumentals and 8 minutes long but never get boring or dull.Well, this CD didn't give that to me. I love pretty much every song on it, but dmb just doesnt sound like they used to. The songs are very short; it's mostly just Dave singing, theres hardly any instrumental break; and I really think they were trying to change their style. It sounds more pop than anything else. I still enjoy this CD, but if you want to get a real feel of what DMB is about, pick up Before These Crowded Streets, which was amazing. Also, all their live CDs are terrific. Busted Stuff, the release after Everyday, shows that DMB is back to their old familiar ways. That was a great CD also.

My favorite album is CRASH but this one has many killer tunes."So Right" and "Mother Father" (w/ Carlos Santana) just blew me away. I can't wait to see them live again this summer. This unique band is even better in concert!

DMB tried to do something new, and it failed. They just tried to rush out this album after the Lillywhite Sessions was leaked, but not released. The album in my opinino has 4 good songs: So Right, Dreams of our Fathers, What You Are, and Everyday. However, it also has many of DMB's worst songs ever (I did it, Angel). Go buy Before These Crowded Streets, that album is sheer perfection.

In the past year I discovered the artistry of the Dave Matthews Band. In a torrent of music acquisition, I have acquired nearly all of their albums, none with disappointment. Upon my virgin listen of 'Everyday' I thought I had found the sour apple in the bunch. But there were a few tracks that called me back (namely, the ones performed at the spectacular 'Live in Central Park' concert) and I continued listening to 'Everyday.'I now fully appreciate 'Everyday.' The style is different from previous DMB albums and it took some adjustment. The musical prowess is still here, however; the DMB is a creative and artistic entity, not just an entertainment fad. One of my least favorites on the album is the 'The Space Between' single. Not because it is a bad track - it just doesn't do much for me. 'Sleep to Dream Her' is a fabulous track, demonstrative of the musical talent of the group. I'm still trying to figure out what the time signature is. 'Everyday,' the title track, has a refreshing if subtle African influence. If you celebrate the artistry of the DMB then definitely buy this album and give it time to grow on you. Then go out and buy 'Live in Central Park' if you don't already own it.

I bought this CD the other day, not because of some review I read but just for the hell of it. I am a fan of DMB, not like some of the diehard, fanatics here on this site, but because I am a fan of good music. I have three DMB CD's in my collection and listen to a wide variety of stuff (Allman Brothers, B.B. King, Jimmy Thackery, Pretenders, Widespread Panic, Goo Goo Dolls, J Geils, Hendrix, AC/DC, Miles Davis, Jimmy Vaughn, Neil Young, Wes Montgomery, etc, etc, etc).I liked Everyday the first time I listened to it. I couldn't wait to hear it again. Didn't matter that it didn't sound like anything they had done before, it was a great CD full of good, soulfull music. So...I decided to check some reviews to see what others thought. Wow!!...from some of the reviews you would think that Dave Matthews himself personally went to these people's homes, beat up their sisters (or brothers), wrecked their new car, and kicked their dogs! What ever happened to appreciating music for what it is, not for what you, the listener, thinks it should be. It was refreshing, however, to see all the good reviews from the rational thinking, music loving people of the world. After listening to Everyday I pulled my Under the Table CD and listened to it. I am anxious to expand my DMB collection again.

A New Direction,

Let me first say that this is a great album. But like many long time Dave Matthews Band fans I was disappointed and left wanting after listening to it the first time. It reflects a change in musical direction for the band, due to the influence of producer Glen Ballard. For me, the appeal of previous Dave Matthews Albums, as well as their live shows, is that the songs are both a vehicle for the lyrics and a showcase for the band's great playing. I have always enjoyed the insturmental interludes in so many of their songs, especially the extended solos of Leroi Moore. I feel that the band is an afterthought on this disc, never rising to the spotlight, so to speak. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, the album is a great rock album. More along the lines of their singles from Under the Table and Crash, but a bit more complex and contemplative. Once I accepted it wasn't what I was expecting, and the more I listen to it, the more I enjoy it. Althought brief, the songs carry and emotional weight that last after the notes stop.

Some people may say that this CD and Busted Stuff is their worst two albums' and I strongly disagree. I cannot get enough of this CD or Busted Stuff. Leroi really plays like i don't know what in track 9,but the sax part in that song is wonderful.

Ever song on Everyday is a stand-alone song capable of platinum status as a single, but these songs are all together on one album. What results is an album that just doesn't come together as smoothly as it could and should. The songs seem to get a little monotonous and drone on. Part of this is caused by Dave's switch to an electric guitar; I really don't understand the change because the electric guitar stifles out the other soft sounds that make DMB so enjoyable to listen to. Everyday is not a bad album it is just not a classic like Under the Table and Dreaming.

DMB at their worst,
This review is from: Everyday (Audio CD)
What more can be said? it lacks intelligent, fresh themes and complex lyrics and is ultimately boring. The only song worth listening to is "What You Are," as it has a hard-edged vibe similar to old-school (non-BTCS) versions of "Halloween." Also, the song "Everyday," a revised version of its earlier superior, "#36," is good when Matthews softly sings it alone on the acoustic (as he did at the performance for the televised 9/11 fundraiser). And interestingly, Everyday and their successive album, Busted Stuff, (both representing their worst efforts in the studio to date) are the only albums so far to feature the band members themselves as cover art. draw your own conclusions.

I consider myself a pretty avid Dave fan. I have every album, have been to a few shows, and it occupies most of my CD player's time. Although many fans like me do not like this album, I still think that it's worth getting. Yes, it's true that the CD is filled with some really bland, poppy tracks such as "The Space Between", and "Angel", but there are some tracks that justify the album. "So Right" is high quality, on-par with some of his Before These Crowded Streets and Busted Stuff songs. "When the World Ends" is a great song to relax to, and "What You Are" has a great urgent riff that gets you into the song. Even "I Did It", though disgustingly poppy, is catchy. All in all, I think that it is both worthy of adding to your collection of Dave CDs, or a great first one to buy if you are just getting into the band and looking for some of his most accessible music. If you are a "purist" Dave fan, however, don't expect to be impressed. |
