5.0 out of 5 stars Love this movie!
I have seen this movie easily over 50 times - I came across it randomly when I was still a teenager, and have watched it religiously throughout the years. I would recommend it to anyone who like dirty dancing, grease, step up, etc.

2.0 out of 5 stars Jesse and Frank James: The Next Generation
'Shag' is a typical 80s teen movie (set in the 1960s) and an OK way to pass the time on those terms. However, it does give the audience a chance to see Tyrone Power's son and Henry Fonda's granddaughter in a movie together- the two great stars who played outlaw brothers in the classic 1939 Western, "Jesse James".

5.0 out of 5 stars GRITS, May 24 2004

This movie has got to be the best movie (along with Gone With the Wind) ever! I have actually worn out my VHS tape because my girlfriends and I (all from South Carolina) get together to watch it at least once a week! I went to Senior Week (as Sun Fun weekend is known to graduating seniors from SC) four years ago, as did every graduating senior in SC, as did our parents before us. My mom loves to watch it because it reminds her of her Senior Week (in 1963)! Those who don't like it, are usually guys or those who don't know what shagging is or how to do it (people not from SC or the South, basically). So give it a chance, don't just rent it, you have to buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars NO SELF-RESPECTING SOUTHERNER SHOULD BE WITHOUT IT, Oct 28 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: "Shag, the Movie (Widescreen)" (DVD)
Ah, Shag! This is one of my favorite movies for so many reasons. The movie is definitely lightweight, but also very memorable. The perfect casting had one thing to do with that. Everyone in this movie, down to the late Carrie Hamilton, is made-to-order. The "Southern" details of this movie are also dead-on. As a North Carolinian who's spent a heck of a lot of time in Myrtle Beach (though in the '90s, not in the '60s) the accents, expressions, music, and clothes are all correct for the time and place. The story is simple, but most great movies have simple plots when you get right down to it. What makes Shag shine is great acting, fantastic period details, and quotable dialogue. Watch this movie with another Southerner or anybody else who could appreciate the humor and the fun of this great movie. Whether it's your first time or your 100th time watching it, Shag is absolutely the "most fun"!
By the way, though this is not the original motion picture soundtrack, it's still pretty darn good. For those of you who didn't see the early VHS version of the movie, let me explain: some of the songs were in the original version of the movie and are still in this version; others were added later. The original movie soundtrack, which I still have, contains new versions of old songs, plus a couple of original ones. I don't know why it was changed, but I'd sure like to have a copy of the DVD with the original soundtrack, which includes songs by K.D Lang and Randy Newman, to name a few.

5.0 out of 5 stars Order a Pizza, grab some Coca Colas and watch this one!!!, Sep 13 2002
This review is from: "Shag, the Movie (Widescreen)" (DVD)
This movie is so much fun! I have a copy of my own, and one to borrow to my friends, since it takes too long to explain everything I love about this "feel-good take me back to the early 1960's teenage way of life" movie, before Viet Nam and before President Kennedy was killed. It's like Mystic Pizza, Ferris Bueller, Animal House and Dirty Dancing all rolled into one. And wait'll you see Tyrone Power, Jr. as Harley in the movie! The cast is wonderful, the cars are cool, the dancing is out of this world, and the script writers have captured the way teens communicated. It's both hokey at times and laugh out loud funny, too. You'll find yourself rooting for darling Pudge in the dance contest and wanting to learn the Shag. "It's the most fun!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Shag, The Movie, Aug 13 2002

I knew it, I knew it!! When I bought the VHS format of Shag, I was disappointed because I was sure the music was different than the rental version I had seen. It wasn't nearly as good with the "new" music. I told the video retailer and they said I was wrong, that only one version was made. I read the reviews and I WAS RIGHT! One of the reviews says the DVD version restores the original music, so I am going to buy it. Can't wait to see the original version. This movie is one of the best feel good movies I've ever seen. Great for teens, adults...good memories. Like Pudge really needed that Metrical! It's the most fun!

Everyone in my family loves the movie. We watch it at least once a week. It is one of the only movies that my kids will actually sit down and watch. We love the music and the dancing.

What a brilliant movie, with the exception of the end where the girls sing together on the porchsteps of the sentator's summer home in Myrtle Beach. That little Dirty Dancing ripoff was really, really lame. But the rest of the movie was great! Robert Rustler, who didn't act in a billion other movies like I thought he would, gave the performance of his lifetime. Tyrone Power Jr looks like his daddy. You already know Phoebe Cates, Bridget Fonda, and Annabeth Gish. Great eye candy for a really, really fun movie. It's a beach movie without the stupidity.

I've probably watched this movie 50 times. Nothing like watching a summer vacation in Myrtle Beach to put you in a good mood. Hanging out at the Grand Strand...shaggin' and drinking bevos (oddly enough, a bevo was a non-alcoholic beverage in prohibition days...a fact that has nothing to do with this review)...that's the life!

Shag has great music, fun dialogue, famous speeches, some hot shaggin', Elvis impersonators, and great party scenes that make the movie flow really fast while a smile is on your face the entire time.

For the DVD, I didn't think the sound quality was very good. I have 50's movies that had better sound. I own Annette Funicello's Pajama Party on DVD. It has MUCH better sound. So that was disappointing, especially considering there's music throughout the entire movie. But even though the sound is a little disappointing and there's no special features in this movie (aside from a trailer), this movie is still one you should own.

After about 50 views, I finally picked up on something that I thought I'd share, since I feel a warm sense of accomplishment.

In the car ride, Melaina was giving Caroline (Pudge) her fortune. Caroline picked yellow. No idea why, since she wore a blue dress at the end of the movie. Anyway, she picked Yellow, and the fortune was: You will marry Bullwinkle and raise 5 kids (or however many kids; that's unimportant). Fast forward to the party scene...underneath the table that had booze sprinking off the tablecloth. Chip (her love interest in the movie) does a Bullwinkle impression! He blows Pudge away with it! From that point, it becomes a standing joke. HER FORTUNE WAS PROBABLY CORRECT! Isn't that something? Watch it again. Dance with it. Tie nylons to a bedpost and shag with yourself. It deserves the 5 stars I gave it for fun, nostalgia, music, and girls. It's the most fun!

Don't get caught with your rooster showing. Buy the movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Pyjama Party Movie Ever!, April 4 2002

I, like so many others, first saw this movie when I was in middle school. It has been a long-time favorite of mine, and was frequently rented for sleep-overs and pyjama parties. It brings back some wonderful memories for me. This movie is kind of a "chick-flick" (no offense to anyone), although I am sure all would get a few good laughs from it. I highly recommend this movie if you want to have fun, hear good music, and hang out with friends.
