5.0 out of 5 stars Just plain good music
WOW. Attitude adjustment: The thinking should not be "What? Russell Crowe, the actor, can sing?" but rather "What? Russell Crowe, the singer, can act?" At the risk of being redundant, wow. If sex had a voice, it would sound like Russell Crowe, but that's just my opinion (I could be wrong). Interestingly, when I went to (many) music stores today to find more by this...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Review For Those Who Do NOT Have A Crush On Russell Crowe
Wow! As I write this, there are 43 reviews of this album in Amazon, and 40 of them are 4 or 5 stars. Unbelievable! This album is OK. A couple of songs are quite pleasant. The opening track, "Things Have Got To Change", is downright good. But there is nothing to be found here to explain the outpouring of raves from the fans, except for one thing, which is the fact that a...

1.0 out of 5 stars Russell should take singing lessons, May 22 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Bastard Life Or Clarity (Audio CD)
If you are a Russell Crowe fan; buy this album. You will like it. If you are not; save you money. You'll hate it because you won't be as forgiving towards Russell Crowe's pathetic flat voice as his fans obviously are. Fans love his touching and sensitive lyrics. If your not an already a built in fan, you will find them them not very clever, unpoetic and "wordy". Fans feel he can do no wrong, hence all of the positive reviews of this album. I'm sure they all have their own personal copy of Gladiator too.

2.0 out of 5 stars I hope he dosen't quit his day job, May 22 2004
This review is from: Bastard Life Or Clarity (Audio CD)
Russell Crowe's voice is bad, I just don't think he is a very good singer at all. The album is ok, but uninspired. Not much good to say about it really. Very average.

If sex had a voice, it would sound like Russell Crowe, but that's just my opinion (I could be wrong). Interestingly, when I went to (many) music stores today to find more by this group (I am wearing out this CD...), only one had any of their CD's. I then discovered that "Gaslight" seems to be this same CD but with a few more songs--don't know if any are missing, I just glanced and moved on when I saw all the duplications. You might want to look into that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a listen for the Lyrics, Jun 10 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bastard Life Or Clarity (Audio CD)
No, Russell does not have the best singing voice on the planet, but the songwriting team of Dean Cochrane and Russell Crowe is what pulls this album together. The lyrics are wonderful and most of the songs are well-constructed. Let's put it this way - it's better than his latest album, Other Ways of Speaking!!!
Give it a listen. The band is good in concert.

1.0 out of 5 stars Who Are These People?, April 10 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bastard Life Or Clarity (Audio CD)
That 46 reviewers (as of this writing) would give this thing an average of 4.5 stars certainly proves that there is no accounting for taste. It is quite clear that Mr. Crowe cannot sing. Whatever these sounds are he's making on this cd, no reasonable person could call it singing. Maybe it's some form of performance art. Why people would be willing to listen to this recording, much less purchase it and then praise it in reviews, is a complete mystery to me. Obviously I just don't understand great art and great artists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Music for Grownups, April 8 2003

I really liked this CD. I had gotten a demo of "Sail These Same Oceans" and had to get the CD after hearing it. It's nice to have music that adults can enjoy. I love his voice and am a big fan of his movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarity- A Winner in my book, Feb 10 2003

I thoroughly enjoyed this album and have played it over and over and etc. Russell doesn't have a bad voice, low and sexy, and it has alot of heart and sadness in it. He is really emotional on some of the songs, too. I think he does a good job and the band is terrific!! Needless to say, Dave Kelly is the best drummer to come out in many years! Plus it is danceable.

5.0 out of 5 stars bastard life or clarity, Oct 7 2002
This review is from: Bastard Life Or Clarity (Audio CD)
This is one of the best cd I own. I love it. Can't say enought about it other than most of the songs are about something personal that has happen to the band. Russel Crowe wrote most of the songs and they are great. I think he sings as well as he does movies. He enjoys it and it shows. His voice is great and the songs give you a since of who he is as person. I very loving man. I hope hollywood never changes him..

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd give it 9 stars!!, Oct 3 2002
This review is from: Bastard Life Or Clarity (Audio CD)
Curiousity begat another fan for the talent, intellect, and sense of humor shown in this group! I listen to it repeatedly and am not only entertained for the enjoyment of music, but am challenged to ponder over the stories being told. The crescendo in "Things have got to change" is wonderful. I love the sassy sound in "Somebody Else's Princess", which makes me smile every time I hear it. A person cannot stay in a bad mood while listening to "Swept Away Bayou", especially the end of it when the music just carries you away. Give it a try, you will be impressed as this 56 year old grandmother is.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Review For Those Who Do NOT Have A Crush On Russell Crowe, Sep 16 2002

Wow! As I write this, there are 43 reviews of this album in Amazon, and 40 of them are 4 or 5 stars. Unbelievable! This album is OK. A couple of songs are quite pleasant. The opening track, "Things Have Got To Change", is downright good. But there is nothing to be found here to explain the outpouring of raves from the fans, except for one thing, which is the fact that a certain handsome movie star is doing the singing and writing the songs. So if you've got a huge crush on Russell Crowe and you like rather pedestrian classic rock, go ahead and buy this, you won't be disappointed. But if you hope to find something more interesting than John-Mellencamp-meets-Bon-Jovi-R-O-C-K, you won't find it here. Crowe has a very appealing sound to his voice, but misses the note far too often. The playing is utterly devoid of inspiration or originality. The lyrics are banal. The overall affect actual sounds kind of good if you don't listen too closely. Who knows, if Russell weren't a movie star, he might even be able to scrape out a living making music. But if Russell weren't a movie star, I guarantee you he wouldn't have 40 rave reviews for music as mediocre as this.
