4.0 out of 5 stars A bit flawed, but otherwise delightful.
The only thing I really didn't like about this movie (and it's only a trivial detail) was the opening credits with this girl group in bridal outfits singing that old 50's song (which I can't recall the name of right now). Maybe it's just me, but I found it annoying. Others may find it amusing. Anyway, the movie itself is great. Julia Roberts finds out her best...

1.0 out of 5 stars Just a comedy but scary what it says about women in the '90s
This movie really bothered me. I like romantic comedies, I liked Pretty Woman, but this movie just played like it was written by a man who thinks he knows women well...but doesn't. Why do we have to see Julia Roberts falling apart because she's not married? why the implication that if she didn't take her job so seriously (more "wifely") she would be happier...

Julia Roberts finds out her best friend is getting married, but wants to break it up. That's the basic premise. The laughs come fast and furious when she takes off to break up the marriage. She ends up becoming friends with the bride (Cameron Diaz) and turning everyone's life upside down. It's a great Julia Roberts movie. But, let's not forget Rupert Holmes who did such a wonderful job as Roberts' gay friend, who comes to save the day with a flamboyant charm (including a hilarious group sing-along of Dionne Warwick's "I Say A Little Prayer For You"). And, don't miss the scene where a member of the wedding party gets her tongue stuck to an ice sculpture of Nude David (guess where). The only flaw I can see in the film (and it's a big one) is the character of Michael, the friend getting married. (For the life of me, I can't remember the actor's name.) His whole character, and perhaps it's in the talent of the actor, is weak, uninteresting, and lacking any depth at all, not to mention that distracting scar on his face. His lack of depth might go unnoticed except that he's one of the main characters. Fortunately, Roberts and Holmes pick up the slack and make it a wonderfully funny film.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Best Romantic Comedy on the shelf, Nov 18 2003

This is a great movie. Roberts DOESN'T get the guy--which surprises us, b/c, well, she just always does! Cameron Diaz gives the best performance I have seen. Rupert steals the show. He is hysterically funny! Just a very solidly funny, sweet movie with a great cast.

The chemistry between Roberts and her best friend is smart. It's enough to make us all wonder... will they get together??? Are they meant to be together? Also speaks to the issue of remaining friends with ex's. Are we doomed to always be a tad jealous???

4.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling comedy rings poignant bells, July 20 1998

Though many of Julianne Potter's (Julia Roberts) efforts to win back an old boyfriend days before his impending nuptials may seem far fetched or even sociopathic, what rescues this movie from the banality of most commericial comedies is the smart writing and the expert performances. Julia Roberts can easily lapse into blandness (see CONSPIRACY THEORY), but she does make Julianne human in spite of her selfish actions. While we may never root for her (there is no doubt that Cameron Diaz is the truly better match for Dermot Mulroney's character), by the end, when Julianne regains her senses, we finally can feel her loss. Roberts plays the love-confession and the poignant farewell scenes so well that we may be thinking back to our own love losses with a tinge of remorse or, at least sentiment. Kudos also to Rupert Everett, unfairly robbed of an Oscar nomination, for his brilliant, unforgettable portrayal of Julianne's surrogate best friend, George. George seems to be th! e only voice of reason left in Julianne's life and if more movie (and real-life) friendships were this open, decent, and genuine, the world would be a better place and there would be no need for the glut of talk show deviates which populate the airwaves. MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING bears up under repeated viewings as well; it's not Shakespeare, but it's miles above the standard Hollywood comedy. Thank the stars. END

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT romantic comedy that can be watched over and over!!, Jun 5 2004

I'm not the biggest Julia Roberts fan in the world, but I have yet to stumble across a film of hers which isn't purely great entertainment. And this little gem is no different. It's warm and fun, full of great laughs, sweet romantic moments, and irresistable characters. As Jules, Roberts sparkles with charm, and even though she screws up, you can't help but root for her in the end. Cameron Diaz is an absolute riot in this early role-I have yet to see her in a more charming, winning role. And Rupert Everett is simply flawless-his dry wit steals every scene he's in.

This isn't "great cinema", but as far as light romantic comedies go, you can't go wrong with this one. Sure it's light and fluffy, but it's not dumb, and it never fails to touch you, and make you laugh. Loaded with heaps upon heaps of unforgettable scenes, this is everything a romantic comedy should be. If you're thinking of renting a light flick over the weekend, My Best Friend's Wedding fits the bill.Sweet, fun, intelligent comedy at its' best.

Jules Potter is in love with her bdest friend Micheal, but he is about to marry someone else. Jules will do anything to mess up his big day. This movie is loads of fun and laughs. When they break out into song in one scene, you can't help but sing along. I love this movie and watch it often. It's one of my favorites with Roberts next to Pretty Woman.

Why do we have to see Julia Roberts falling apart because she's not married? why the implication that if she didn't take her job so seriously (more "wifely") she would be happier? why the implication that Cameron Diaz, the one who gets the guy, has made the better decision, to quit college and her dreams of being an architect to get married? (why would she need to quit working anyway even if she did get married? why does her future spouse want her to do so?) If social subtexts don't bother you enjoy this movie but if you can't quite turn off the reality meter then give this one a miss.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great error, Dec 14 2002

I had an other movie in mind as i bought Best Friends wedding - I dont remember which - and I realised I bought this stupid movie in error. Best Friends Wedding is so disappointing for me. Not only because after watching this film I find pretty woman Julia a really ugly woman. Maybe the character she plays also takes influence on her visual appearance. I mean to make an it-want-to-be romantic film about a person which has such a deep bad soul, for me it is anything but romantic. And then all the artificial acting, it is such a pain. Not to mention about "comedy"... where? Its sad.

THis movie was so bad. My ex-girlfriend dragged me into it. I spent the rest of the night thinking how much I hated this movie. Seriously, it was boring and unoriginal. Julia Roberts cannot act and neither can Cameron Diaz (ughh I hate her). If you like this movie then I have to question your intellligence. DO yourself a favor and rent "Office Space" instead.
