5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of the lot!!
I have all 3 versions of this movie and the original is by far the best. I found it scarey when I first saw it as a child and I still watch it at least once a year. Can't say that for the second and third version.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best, April 10 2008
This review is from: The Thing from Another World (DVD)
One of the first movies I was truly facinated with as a child. This 1950's Sci-Fi horror classic is still one of the best. I believe I've seen it at least a hundred times and even though it is fifty years old it still holds up. The movie is about a team of scienetists at a remote arctic outpost that discover an alien space craft buried in the ice, within the craft dormant for a thousand years sleeps an alien more evil and destructive than anything mankind has ever encountered. This movie does't rely on a lot of special effects the way films do today, rather it used suspense and drama to deliver maximum effect. Superbly acted by Kenneth Tobey, Robert Cornthwaite, Margaret Sheridan, it also features a small appearance by a very young Charles Bronson, this movie is must see for any Sci-Fi fan. I definatly recomend it.

Just have to put my two cents worth in. I love this movie and don't care what others have to say. I know it's been picked apart for it's aparent statements about the political turmoil of the time but who cares it's a really good scare flick if you just sit and watch and not take it too serious. Just enjoy it and "Keep watching the skies!"

If ever there was an example of less is more, this film is it for it lets one's mind, the greatest special effects instrument ever, conjure up the alien more than any computer graphics technology. How much more this film is than Carpenter's 1982 revival which, with it's continual explicit morphing monsters bores one utterly.

This taut and exciting 50s Sci-Fi classic is a winner from beginning to end.
Ably directed by Howard Hawks and with a great cast this thriller/chiller takes us far up north to a snowy and lonely USAF outpost. From the outset we are treated to some characters who seem like they could be someone you know. The use of over-lapping dialogue and read in a relaxed and understated way enhances their "normalcy" and that of the entire atmosphere making it much more believable.
When something crashes a few miles from the station an investigative party is put together and into action. What they find astonishes them.....an object round and big has crashed into the ice with a small part of it sticking forth from its' icy tomb. When they try to blast it out with thermite explosives they inadvertently blow up their precious find but soon after discover something was thrown out of the craft. They dig it out of the ice and take it back to the station where some disagreements over the disposition of their haul erupt between the military, the scientists and the press. In the meantime the ice encased "treasure" is accidenatlly unthawed and starts roaming the local environs and apparently it isn't in a happy mood!
The movie at this point forward is one tense moment after another as the charachters' and OUR nerves are on constant edge wondering where their "friend" is and where it will strike next.
It's a fight to the finish with some questions answered and others not, both practical and ethical.
On the technical side this is a fine grain print and crisp transfer. The contrast could have been improved somewhat but the sound is very good.
In conclusion this is one of a select few movies of this period(see my other reviews)that definitely belong in the classic category and on YOUR movie shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars The scariest movie I have ever seen, July 6 2004

This is one movie that really scared me as a kid when I first saw it and still gives me the creeps. I love the actors, dialog, scenery and the story. This movie will give anyone the "willies". Everytime it is on tv I get caught up again watching it. Hollywood cannot make movies like this anymore. The new movies I watch (maybe) once and forget about them. The Thing I can watch over and over. Margaret Sheridan is so cute.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Keep your eyes on the sky", July 5 2004

The Thing from Another World is a highly entertaining mix of the horror and sci-fi genre with a perfect blend of the two. In the North Pole, a team of scientists reports the crash of an unidentified spacecraft near their base camp. The Air Force sends a team in to investigate what happened. Once there, they find an alien spacecraft, but it is destroyed while they are trying to remove it from the ice. However, the group does find a passenger frozen in ice which they take back to the research laboratories. When the creature accidentaly thaws from the ice, the Air Force pilots and the researchers are in for more than they bargained for. What makes this movie enjoyable is that the Thing is not seen for much of the movie allowing the viewer to imagine what it possibly looks like which makes everything a little more tense and nerveracking. Made on a low budget, The Thing is quickly paced with sharp dialogue that never slows down. A classic sci-fi/horror movies from Howard Hawkes that shouldn't be missed.

Kenneth Tobey stars as Captain Patrick Hendry, the by-the-book, courageous leader of the Air Force team sent in to investigate the crash of the spacecraft. Robert Cornthwaite plays Dr. Carrington, the scientist who wants to preserve the Thing because he holds progress in science above all else. Douglas Spencer plays journalist, Scotty, who wants to break the big news to the world. Margaret Sheridan plays Nikki, the love interest for Captain Hendry. Hendry's crew includes James Young, Dewey Martin, Robert Nichols, and William Self. James Arness of future Gunsmoke fame plays the Thing. The movie also stars Eduard Franz, John Dierkes, Nicholas Bryon, George Fenneman, and Paul Frees. The DVD offers fullscreen presentation and the theatrical trailer. For an exciting, well-made horror/scifi movie, check out The Thing from Another World!

Keeping in mind I have 5 versions of this from color to restored B/W, I was very happy with the DVD....the restored scenes didn't stand out that much from the film they had been removed from, and all in all it was like a new look at an old friend....

I would recommend this DVD to anyone, but I would have welcome more bonus material...
