Meticulous and Thrilling Depiction of an Incarnation of Evil
Jack the Ripper is perhaps one of the most famous (or should I say infamous) serial killers known. His has indeed become somewhat of a household name that has withstood the test of time. Best Portrayel Ripper Film
Whats good about this film is that it shows you what those poor women went through. Honestly no one deserves to die a horrible death in the fashion those women did, no matter what your occupation is at the time. I believe this to be a better movie about Jack the Ripper. Best Portrayel Ripper Film, Oct. 12 2006
Whats good about this film is that it shows you what those poor women went through. Honestly no one deserves to die a horrible death in the fashion those women did, no matter what your occupation is at the time. I believe this to be a better movie about Jack the Ripper. We see a great portrayel of what the streets of London were like in those times. Life wasn't easy for the poor then and they had to do what they needed to do in order to suvive. Over all this movie scared me because of the seriousness of what this sicko did to women and how they showed life on the streets in London back in those days. I think I rather live in the heart of Los Angelas or even New York then to live the way Londoners did in those times. Something to think about. Why did Jack the Ripper get away with it? I think the most true part of the film is the portrayel of the freemasons. Do yourself a favor. Rent this one before you decide to buy it. Some people find the Ripper to be disturbing and this film really expresses that.

a bloody good time, Oct. 9 2006
this movie was better than i thought it would be.it shows unerringly the squalor and terror of east end london in the eighteen eighties and how these conditions could spawn such a monster as jack the ripper. johhny depp gives an overall good performance as aberline, although he seems a bit out of it/sleepy/stoned whatever....the ending was a pleasant surprise after so much violence filth and squalor but a bit sad because i was hoping mary and aberline would get together but they never did. still worth a second look tho.

Jack the Stripper, Déc 11 2005
This movie is a real "Seen it all before" type endeavour. Johhny Depps character is the best part of the movie, despite his horrendous accent. Jack the Ripper is reduced to some "crazy old guy" and is almost completely ignored. The hilights are the main Depp character, which could have had his own movie, and the cinematography, which is great, if not superior. It's worth it to watch this movie just for the splendid visual experience. The real crime of this movie is the total reduction of the Jack the Ripper character. With a title like "From Hell", we really expect to see a real candid and explicit view of a fiendish demonic figure, such as Jack the Ripper. The character of which however, in the movie, is really just some crazy old guy. We learn absolutely nothing about his real motives behind his intricate butchery, and the one scene that attempts to delve into his inner insanity is totally laughable. It almost feels like watching Mr. Rogers screw up a cherry pie. This movie is from Hell all right, but not in any good way.

RIPPER Rip-off..., Juil 20 2004
If you're a so-called RIPPER-ologist, this movie may be more than disappointing. If you're looking for cinema reprise of Alan Moore's evil graphic novel this isn't it either. Johnny Depp is engaging enough as Scotland Yard CDI Fred Abberline, but the movie lacks depth and tries to have "outdated" psychedelic pyrotechnics (and very good art design)compensate for a fluffy plot. David Wickes/BBC/Michael Caine televideo production of JACK THE RIPPER is vastly more accomplished both as entertainment and movie manifesto of Stephen Knight's THE FINAL SOLUTION. FROM HELL and TFS both propose Masonic conspiracy to protect the British Monarchy from a scandal involving the "presumptive heir to the throne". In my estimate the best Ripper story(unless you want to go way "back in day" for '50's solutionless, but very atmospheric B x W cult thriller called,THE LODGER) remains,MURDER BY DECREE: where Sherlock Holmes(Christopher Plummer)stands-in for Abberline to face down Masonic adepts who are also RULERS of not-so merry, or olde England at height of the Victorian Age Empire. Again, if you're a fan of Johnny Depp you might like this surprisingly edgeless PM probe of the monstrous Whitehall Chapel Murders. Otherwise, be prepared to shrug-off the bloody, drugged-up,grape strewn path of this Jack the Ripper rip-off.

Meticulous and Thrilling Depiction of an Incarnation of Evil, Juil 6 2004
Jack the Ripper is perhaps one of the most famous (or should I say infamous) serial killers known. His has indeed become somewhat of a household name that has withstood the test of time. The Whitechapel murders, to this day, remain unsolved, and many people find themselves morbidly drawn to this slew of ghastly occurrences. The Hughes brothers are no different from the countless others who seek to dissect the facts surrounding these heinous crimes, and they approach this fascination with cinematic fervor, creating an excellent movie from the excellent comic book. There have been countless books, movies, and PBS specials produced that delve into the Jack the Ripper tales and theories. This particular adaptation is the depiction of a detective named Inspector Fred Abberline (Johnny Depp) who is hot on the trail of the murderous monster. Enlisting the hallucinatory effects of absinthe, he can induce visions that aid him in his quests. Throughout his investigation, he gradually begins to fall for one of the Whitechapel prostitutes at risk (Mary Kelly played by Heather Graham), and this serves to up the ante regarding the challenge to find the villain and, furthermore, accelerate his efforts. Sir William Gull (Ian Holm) is a doctor who contributes to Inspector Fred Abberline's profile of the meandering butcher. Add to this an illegitimate marriage and a royal scandal, and this equates to an enticingly dour, moody thriller that one can't help but to enjoy. The sets on this film are incredible, and included in the two disc edition within the extras existing on the DVD is an intriguing explanation of the recreation of the sets from actual photographs and maps from the period. The props and attire were also quite well done. The acting and casting were superb. The dark lighting created a potently thrilling and disturbing atmosphere, and the excellent cinematography only served to strengthen that sinister ambiance, as well as create an almost overwhelming sense of impending danger. The blood and gore effects are incredible as well, yet they never take precedence over the story line, which is very much appreciated. Though fairly predictable, this film is still an exhilarating, if somewhat fictitious, romp through some dreary and obscure pages in history. This movie is a must for fans of horror, true crime, and dark thrillers. I very highly recommend this film to those with any kind of brooding fascination for the macabre. Not for the easily disturbed.

Totally unaccurate, Jui 22 2004
Par Un client
Ok, for starters this movie is in now way accurate. Titanic was fictional as in they added fictional characters but this just totally changed what actually happened. I was anticipating the most brutal slaying of Heather Grahm's character Mary at the end and when I saw what they did I was like "What the hell?" You'll see what I mean if you watch it. And Jack the Ripper wasn't caught and nobody knows who he is. Johnny Depp is his usual best but even he can't save this weak film. Heather Grahm should just stick to doing comedies, she's good at that but not at this. Good atmosphere is the only good part of this movie

Class B film, Jui 21 2004
As I am a fan of Johnny, I cannot say this is a great film. Stories of "Jack The Ripper" were counted as 1000s, and this is surly not the best.Johnny, though had a great performance, yet cannot act as a Dark-agent, as the story would like to tell. Heather Graham, could not become a reperesntation of virgin as the story would like to tell. and finally, Ian Holm, was not suitable for the role, "Sir William Gull" during his age and body (thought he acts great as the normal Gull, but not good in being Jack) Scenes in the film are suck, make me NOT feeling story is happening in Lardon, but a STUDIO!. In another words, this may be better if director worked better and got a more suitable cast.

Buy the Alan Moore original, Mai 21 2004
Par Un client
As a fan of both Alan Moore and Jonny Depp, I was looking forward to this movie. Ultimately most other reviewers are right -- great detail, not much feel. It's not the worse movie ever, but rent it, don't buy it. If you want a work of creative genius, buy the graphic novel by Alan Moore. Don't be turned off if you aren't a comic book fan, the writting is teriffic, and the whole thing is very intelligent.

Johnny Depp is an angel From Hell, Mai 2 2004
OK, so this isn't the best movie I've seen in my life. I don't think it'll become a classic, because of its genre, but I think this movie is a lot better than some of the critics would have us believe.Firstly, although I admit I wasn't hugely keen on all the cockney accents, I do think that Johnny Depp was brilliant. Maybe it's just because he's gorgeous, but I do think he was brilliant as the dark, brooding inspector in this film. He was just so cool, you couldn't help but find him a very likable hero. The dastardly villain, Jack The Ripper himself, was very powerful and convincing too - pretty much a flawless performance. Although the plot was a tad long-winded and inexplicable at times, I've seen a lot worse and in the end, it did all make sense. I didn't get bored even when the movie was a little tough going, because of the superb set and generally interesting characters. I personally thought the prostitutes and policemen were extremely authentic - there was very little Hollywood glamour in the film, which was necessary to show the seedy areas of Victorian London. My only real complaint about this movie would be Heather Graham - she really wasn't anything to write home about. Still, she wasn't playing a very demanding or charismatic role, so maybe I'm being a little harsh here. Otherwise, this film was a success in my opinion - well cast, well directed and brilliant scenery. By the way - this film is NOTHING like Sleepy Hollow. From Hell is pure evil, whilst Sleepy Hollow is its very tongue in cheek, poor relation.

A bloody labor of love, Avril 14 2004
Okay, I'm a big fan of Johnny Depp. I had also heard that Roman Polanski had a hand in the production somehow, though I don't know where I heard it and it's not in the credits. It was only in doing research on Roman Polanski, however, that I even heard about this movie -- and outside of my affinity for Johnny Depp, it would have been the only reason I purchased it.Johnny Depp has done some very interesting occult related work lately, now that I think about it. That said, yes, the movie is based on an intriguing theory about the Jack the Ripper murders. It is very powerful and well thought out. The cinematography is incredible, and appears to be a true labor of love. I couldn't help thinking of Sharon Tate all the way through it. ...geminiwalker
