5.0 out of 5 stars A great film
This is one of those films that a first viewing disapoints, it's not at all what I expected, much like "Van Helsing", but on further viewings becomes a true joy. The only weakness IMHO is that it is clearly the first of a series of films... that will never be filmed. Sad.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK for hard core Connery Fans only!
No matter how many average, weird, or downright awful movies Sean Connery makes, he'll always command an audience. In this film, Connery plays a retired British explorer roped into preventing WW I by leading a team of misfits in a vaguely Bondian adventurer. As a nice twist, most of the misfits consist of 19th Century British villains such as Mr. Hyde, the Invisible Man,...

Hyde, the Invisible Man, and Captain Nemo. Of course, no one bothers to explain why such villains would agree to unite for any cause other than, well, villainy. The film is comic book-y in a bad way, with ridiculous dialogue and a poor sense of continuity, and the effects are frequently unintentionally funny, especially Mr. Hyde's appearance. Connery makes the film work as a throwaway action film, but it's clear from the extras that the cast and some of the crew were deluded into thinking this was something more. Not surprisingly, this movie plays much better on DVD than it did in the theaters. If you're a die-hard Connery fan, you'll like this one. If not, and you want to see Connery at his best, you'd be better off with Goldfinger.

The title League of Extraordinary gentlemen is pretty self
explanatory.basically,adventure Allan Quatermain(Sean Connery)recruits
a group of heroes with various abilities,to take on a villain named the
Fantom, and prevent him from starting a World War.the movie takes place
in an alternate Victorian era.the movie is directed by Stephen
Norrington(Blade).I enjoyed this film much more than i expected.i really
had low expectations, but one day,i saw it cheap and thought what the
heck.this one has a lot going for it.lots of action, good special
effects,a bit of intrigue and even some humour.i liked the premise and
i thought they did a good job with it.i think the movie had the
potential to be much worse, but it all worked well.i give this movie a
strong 4/5

5.0 out of 5 stars LXG is GREAT!, July 15 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Widescreen) [Import] (DVD)
I love LXG! It's cartoony and action packed and has so many of my favorite fictional characters in it. Most importantly it's got Peta Wilson in a perfect role for her. Ultra-sexy Peta is one hot vampire chick! The reviewer who said she didn't do any vampire stuff must not have really seen the flick. She drinks human blood! What more do you want dude? She flies and turns into bats too! That's not vampire stuff? Stop smokin' and WATCH THE MOVIE!
Don't let bad reviews written by people who didn't see LXG turn you away. It may not be your thing or it might be. I had a ball watching LXG. Give it a go, have some fun with it, enjoy the characters, watch Peta do vampire stuff,.. and hell just watch Peta! She's HOT!

4.0 out of 5 stars gorgeous sets and effects on blu-ray, Nov 6 2009

I always liked the look of this movie, and now I love it, thanks to the clarity of blu-ray quality. The cool production design, great looking cinematography and special effects are beautifully enhanced in this format. Unfortunately the audio is compressed. The film, a historically-set fantasy that oddly groups exceptional literary characters to save the day, may be flawed but is still interesting and exciting. In addition to a couple of commentaries, the blu-ray also has a target-shoot game involving the film's action sequences, a trivia track, a personal index (to mark your favourite scenes), and a search index (which is easier to utilize than a chapter search).

3.0 out of 5 stars Mina (Peta Wilson) can bite me any time, Mar 5 2008

The year 1899, the world under threat of war. World war. England calls to her hero Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery). Will he head the call? And who else may join to form the league of extraordinary gentlemen

Great concept for a comic book, however never had a chance as a movie.

Where do I start? The story (no plot) had no chance from the start. The graphics were substandard. The dialog was stilted. The fighting was poorly choreographed. The music was forgettable. However the hokey costumes were a quite amusing. I always thought Sean Connery could make any movie work until now.

On the plus side Peta Wilson could be a modern day Emma Peel "The Avengers" (1961 TV series)

4.0 out of 5 stars live action old school justice league, July 9 2004
By A Customer
LXG is an entertaining combo of literary good guys vs literary bad guys, comic book heroics, and CGI. It's a fun Saturday matinee type of adventure/fantasy movie. It's the Justice League of the 19th century. I LIKED IT!!

I ENJOYED LXG VERY MUCH. PETA IS A DELIGHT. RICHARD ROXBURGH IS AWESOME. CONNERY MAKES A PERFECT QUATERMAIN. STUART TOWNSEND WAS MADE TO BE DORIAN GREY. NEMO WAS SPOT ON TOO. I ALSO LIKED THE LOOK AND WRITING STYLE OF THE MOVIE. ITS A COMIC BOOK MOVIE THAT LOOKS LIKE A COMIC BOOK. I LOVED THAT.
