3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Coming-of-age Film

The happy ending is a bit far-fetched but, hey, this is meant to be a feel-good film. Acting and directing are both reasonably good. Recommended for easy viewing, particularly for the youngsters or those of us still occasionally thinking of our lost, younger years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, July 18 2004

I saw this movie by accident. The movie that my friends and I wanted to see was sold out, and we decided to sit in on this one, mainly because Elisha Cuthbert is SMOKING!

Anyway, needless to say I didn't expect much of this movie. And my was I quite pleasantly surprised. I was amazed by the performances of Emile Hirsch and of Elisha Cuthbert, and of the ensembles as well. Danielle's "pimp" was quite a well-played character, and I must give the actor his due (though I can't bring his name to mind right now).

This movie is a wonderful blend of heart, humor, fantasy (please, who wouldn't want Elisha Cuthbert to move in next door), and downright SEX APPEAL.

The movie keeps you enticed at all times watching the relationship between the leads develop, all the way to the VERY surprising and rewarding ending. After this having been our begrudged fall-back, my friends and I walked out of the theater, and all we could say was, "Wow". None of us could find more eloquent words to describe the movie. Throughout the entire 20 minute drive from the theater, no words came to mind.

This movie is well worth buying. You should probably get the soundtrack too, since it is some sweet music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated!!, Jun 28 2004

I don't know why the critics bashed this movie so hard! Some said it was because the commercials were deceiving, to which I replay that almost all commercials are deceptive! To me this is one of the funniest movies of this year, and I've seen literally everything that's come out thus far. Cuthbert is amazingly hot, and this is maybe the one time where Emile Hirsch didn't annoy me in a movie. Give this one a chance and judge it for yourself.

If you missed it in theaters, as apparently many did -- this is well worth the buy. Surprising, enticing. amazing, all the way through. Great music placement throughout.

4.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good film., Jun 26 2004

Whoever reviewed this for amazon.com obviously didn't look too hard when researching his first couple lines. This did NOT in fact receive a "nearly unanimous" beating from critics. It was mixed, and according to rottentomatoes.com, it had more positive reviews than negative (with a 58% rotten rating, just 2% shy of being fresh).

As for the movie itself, I love it. I was surprised to love it because I've never been a huge fan of comedies, but I thought it was sweet and funny. There were moments that were just amazing in the movie.

Elisha Cuthbert is perfect and Hirsch does a great job as well. I also want to reiterate this isn't normally my type of movie (my 3 favorite movies are Usual Suspects/Shawshank/Almost Famous), so the fact that I love it so much is quite surprising even to me.

I'd give it 4.5/5 but since it has to be 4 or 5, i'll say 4, mainly because the cover of the unrated dvd (and the rated dvd) look absolutely terrible (change the cover before it comes out!!).

I'm not sure why it suffered from critics because this was a great movie. It was funny and made a good point.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Disapointed, July 13 2004

I can only assume it was marketing that screwed things up for this film. For one, the title suggested to me when I first heard about it, another one of those teen flicks like "she's all that". I brushed it aside until one night I managed to view it. I was in awe of this film! Not to mention the music arangement. I loved it.. To me it was like a beautiful rendition of Risky Business and I pushed it on all my friends like a petty dope dealer to see this flick. I checked the theatres and found that after only ONE month from release, it was showing at the dollar theatre?! It's a classic!? I hope someone lost their job because of this. I will definitely buy this DVD and you should too. Nuf said...

4.0 out of 5 stars Girl Next Door...Not Your Average Movie Next Door..., Jun 16 2004

Remember when you saw the first "American Pie?" It was funny, it was crude, and it was also sweet. The characters were well written and you genuinely cared about them. The same can be said for "The Girl Next Door." A new sexy comedy from Luke Greenfield whose previous films include "The Animal." In the girl next door we are once again thrust into the high school hell. Douche bag jocks, snotty girls, and geeks are all accounted for, and of course the geeks shall inherit the earth. The title character Danielle, (played perfectly by the gorgeous Elisha Cuthbert "24", "Old School") moves next to uber-student, presidential hopeful Matthew (Emile Kidman, previously in "The Emperor's Club, The Secret Life of Altar Boys.) And naturally his world is turned upside down. Now Matthew is living his life, and doing things he would have never dreamed of, from sneaking into his principals pool, to jogging naked. Danielle has a secret though, she's not on hiatus from college, and she's in-town because she's hiding from her last career...PORN!! So she's hot, the movie is funny, and she's an ex-porn star, is there any reason not to see it? The Girl Next Door is much more than a 21st century teen sex comedy, its well written, smart, and has genuinely great performances. Matthew is a character you want to see succeed, you want him to get the girl because a.) She is ungodly hot, but more because b.) He might just deserve her, and The Girl Next Door also deserves a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars far beyond your run-of-mill high school days flick, Jun 26 2010

Yes, this is a movie about one of those implausible high school hookups--nerdish guy next door scores the hot babe after trials and tribulations. Yet this rises above the usual dumb high school comedy on so many levels. The premise is thin but the script is sharp, funny and dramatic.

Kudos to Elisha Cuthbert and Emile Hirsch who have great screen chemistry. Toss in all the bit part actors and they work well too especially Timothy Olyphant who reprises his "Go" drug dealer persona but this time as a porn producer (is that moving up, down or sideways career-wise?).

The extras do make this worth snagging on DVD as you not only get the usual deleted/gag reel scenes but a good look into how this project came into being and how it veers from the norm. Cuthbert and Hirsch also do voiceover commentary on some key scenes in the extras.

Look, guys, you're going to buy this for Elisha Cuthbert anyway but it is a flick you can get your girlfriend to watch, too. It has heart.

This is one of those movies that you you're not sure about once it starts, but very shortly you'll get right into it. The story line and all the characters fit in perfectly. I've seen this close to a dozen times and I can still keep watching it. Everyone and everything in the movie is just perfect and of course, Elisha Cuthbert...she is gorgeous! You'll even love the villain in the movie. Great setting, incredible story and just such an overall feel good movie. Once you watch it, you'll want to own it. One of my favourite movies of all time.
