3.0 out of 5 stars I'm shocked! Really charming and fun!
I selected this movie with a sigh of resignation. I expected nothing. I was pleasantly surprised by almost everything. Warm, charming and interesting characters played by top-talent actors abound. Sure, it's not Chekhov, but you knew that already. The performances elevate a better-than-average teen screenplay. The young guy from "That 70s Show" is adorable in a...

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute, fun, extra point for cutting all Paris Hilton scenes, July 16 2004

Like others, I was surprised at how much I liked this movie (probably had a lot to do with how cute Kate Bosworth is in it). It has its flaws (the depth of the relationship between Bosworth's character and Pete isn't explored enough) but it succeeds well as a romantic comedy with a nice message to it.

If you watch the extras you'll notice that all Paris Hilton's scenes were deleted (or at least I didn't notice any that remained). I give the movie extra points for this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute and Funny, July 6 2004

I can think of a bunch of reasons for not liking this movie. In spite of all those reasons, I like it. It was cutesy and a bit cliche, and yet, it was funny and generally well done. I should mention that Kate Bosworth steals the show. I could not keep from watching her. She has a lot of potential for much more serious roles. She reminds me of Sally Fields when she was a teenager.

The story is vaguely familiar. The sweet girl in a rural West Virginia town thinks Tad Hamilton the actor is the greatest person on earth, not realizing that someone close to her is deeply in love with her. When she wins a contest to go to Hollywood to date Tad, she is ecstatic. This story could have ended here, but Tad is taken with Rosalee Futch (Bosworth) and pursues her back to West Virginia. The guy who has been in love with her most of his life, Pete Monash (Topher Grace), does not believe he can compete with Tad, though he does try. While the ending has some predictability, it also has some surprises.

One feature that crops up several times in this movie is a certain amount of cynicism and sarcasm. As one example, the scene near the end of the movie between Pete and Rosalee is nearly identical to an earlier Tad Hamilton film. Sometimes the cynicism is equivalent to a baseball bat to the head, and other times it is very subtle. You have to watch the movie a couple of times, and even then I may still have missed much of the cynicism.

Another feature of this DVD are the extras. The gag reel is pretty good, but I also liked the deleted scenes as well. There are a lot more extras than what is listed in Amazon, but the deleted scenes and gag reel are the best. A couple are incredibly hilarious. I was told that Paris Hilton is the blond woman in a couple of scenes, but I do not know for sure because I am unfamiliar with her appearance.

Good light entertainment with quite a bit of humor, and manages to keep from being overly maudlin. I like it enough that I'll watch it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!, Jun 24 2004

This is a very good movie. It's very sweet and charming and refreshing to finally see a romantic comedy where the leads don't wind up in bed with each other. All the new fresh faces of all the new stars add to the enjoyment. Not quite as good as the director's earlier effort (Legally Blonde) but still funny, sharp, and witty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Wonderful!, Jun 18 2004
This review is from: Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! (Widescreen) (DVD)
Ok I admit it...this movie looked dumber than dumb...but I finally broke down and watched it. I laughed the whole way through! It is incredibly funny, charming, and very well written. Topher is awesome as the Piggly Wiggly manager! Anyway, if you are anything like me, you will look at the front cover and maybe watch a couple of trailers for this one, but PLEASE do not let them fool you...this movie is GREAT!

We should give this teenager movie the benefit of a doubt. All of you would have read the storyline by now and believe you me, this movie is surprisingly entertaining and good. All those actors & actresses here are so relaxed and comfortable with their roles and with appearances by Sean Hayes (Will & Grace), Nathan Lane (Lion King, the Producer), Gary Cole to provide comical relief, this movie is light but good akin to a wholesome salad. The message from the movie is simply this: follow your heart. If you love someone so much, go with your feeling. As one character in the movie said simply: once I filed for my job application, I got luckier in getting the job. If you have a dream, pursue it. It's better to break your heart, with all knowing that you have tried your best rather than mumbling to yourself forever, I wish....Don't wish, just do it!

DO NOT rent this movie if you're looking for a masterpiece or any sort of interesting plot twists.

DO, however, rent this movie if you're looking for something, well, sweet. The plot is relatively entertaining, and the characters are rather endearing, not to mention easy on the eyes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for Topher Grace, May 24 2004
By

I'm not going to lie -- this movie would not have been half as enjoyable for me if it weren't for the presence of Topher Grace. It's very predictable, some of the dialogue is tired, and it's not very thought-provoking. But because of Topher Grace (and really Kate Bosworth and Josh Duhamel as well) it ended up being a decent movie.

Rosie Futch (Kate Bosworth) and her best friend Cathy (Ginnifer Goodwin) are clerks at the local Piggly Wiggly in their small West Virginia town. For fun, they go to the local movie theater to see all of the latest movies starring movie star Tad Hamilton (Josh Duhamel). Their friend and boss, Pete (Topher Grace), always reluctantly accompanies them. He mainly does this because, as we figure out fairly quickly, he's been in love with Rosie for forever.

When Rosie wins a contest and gets to go on a date with Tad Hamilton, they hit it off and he follows her back to her small town home, much to Pete's dismay. I'm not going to reveal any more of the plot, but you'll probably figure it all out ten minutes into the movie anyways.

Kate Bosworth has an inherent sweetness to her that makes you like her character. Josh Duhamel pulls off the role of the movie star in an appealing, and sometimes comical ("Rosie! I bought a house! I bought a house!") way. But the real draw is Topher Grace. Although his character here is very similar to Eric on "That 70s Show" (causing some critics to doubt his range) he plays it very well. There is a very funny line in which he threatens to tear Tad apart with his bare hands or his vicious rhetoric, and that one line convinces you of his talent (even my dad laughed).

All in all, if you just want to be entertained for an hour and a half, "Tad Hamilton" is a good movie for you. If you're looking for a "great" movie, don't watch this.
