3.0étoiles sur 5 Nice movie, bad target marketing
Connie and Carla is a decent enough movie. I think Nia Vardalos is a brilliant physical comedienne (witness the way she is constantly bouncing off - literally - David Duchovny) and I will watch anything featuring the great Toni Collette. There are moments of pure comedy genius in this film. As noted elsewhere on these pages, C&C's 'audition' - featuring "Don't Cry for...

2.0étoiles sur 5 not really suited to my tastes, Déc 11 2007
this movie isn't for me,but i could see how people would like it.it has
two very likable leads in Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette.both are great
actresses and work well off each other very well here.they both have
great comedic timing.and their are some great witty moments here.but
for me,there's just too many musicals, and i'm not really a musical
fan.plus,i kinda found the film quite slow.i'm not really into the drag
queen scene in movies either.i knew what the movie was about before
watching it but i still thought id' give it a shot.if you're a musical
fan and you have a bit of patience, this movie might work for,and you
might really enjoy it. my vote for Connie and Carla is a 2/5

This was one of the funniest films I've ever seen. I think as a theatrical musician and performer the musical reviews that Connie and Carla concoct are far more funny to me than they might be to someone who isn't as familiar with the broadway musicals. This film is VERY accessible to anyone, but holds far more comedy for the broadway theatrical performer or theatregoer.

This movie is the first movie that has really made me laugh in a long time. I saw it in the theater and was practically rolling on the floor laughing. Of course it helps that it has David Duchovny in it, but i know i would have loved it even if they had cast some unknown actor for that role. I recomend that everyone watch it over and over again.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Nia Rocks, Juil 4 2004

I can honestly say, most of today's comedies fall flat with me. However, 'Connie and Carla' was a pleasant surprise. It's hilarious. Nia Vardalos is a top-notch talent. She's a comedic genus that is just beginning to receive the acclaim she deserves. She's an excellent writer and I think she would also do well as a stand-up comic. And despite the lack-luster sales of 'Connie and Carla' (especially compared to her romantic comedy box office giant 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'), this movie certainly won't disappoint. I just hope Nia continues in her success-and gets pregnant like she wants to-I'm certain that new chapter of her life will bring some lively and comedic tales. Bottom line: this DVD is well worth the buy. Keep the family out of the bathroom, you'll be laughing so hard, you might need it.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Very surprising, Jui 16 2004
I wasn't expecting an awful lot from 'Connie and Carla', I must say - as a gay man I am somewhat over-used to a gay theme in movies being an excuse for Hollywood Cliche and Desperation ('To Wong Foo', 'Jeffrey'), but I must point out how pleasantly surprised I was with this 2004 offering from Michael Lembeck ('Friends', 'Mad About You').

The plot follows dinner-theatre afficiandos Connie (Nia Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette) as they go into hiding from a murderous Crimelord, disguised as drag queens working in the Handle Bar. Enter Robert, AKA Peaches (Stephen Spinella), and his estranged brother Jeff (David Duchovney), who help the girls find a job, a home, and hopefuly, a way out of the mess their lives have become.

What's so surprising about 'Connie and Carla' is the genuine sincerity with which the leads play their parts - it would have been so easy to play the role for cheap slapstick gags but Vardalos and Collette do their reputations justice and keep it more real than many drag movies I can remember, and the film benefits hugely from this - a bit like how Audrey in 'Little Shop of Horrors' wasn't played for Camp, even though the character itsef was the living embodiment of Camp. Spinella as Peaches looks uncannily like the Mom from 'The Wonder Years' but as Robert, is whole and believable as a hypersensitive and family-estranged gay man, and Duchovney as Jeff turns in a surprisingly endearing and fluid performance as Jeff.

Comic relief comes in the shape of the supporting cast (Alec Mapa is particularly funny), and a cameo from Debbie Reynolds (in fine form) completes the roster of players for the movie.

Direction is pretty mundane, for the most part, but where this comes into its own is during the cabaret scenes - why should semi-amateur numbers in a small, rather unsuccessful L.A. bar look like MGM Musical Extraveganzas, anyway? - and this is nicely contrasted with the building crescendo as the bar, and Connie & Carla, become more affluent. Musically it's not an average run-of-the-mill drag flick either, and it's nice to see touches like 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar' being used for comedy effect - and not a sign of bloody 'I will Survive'! Excellent.

Vardalos and Collette (though we do not really see enough of the latter) are excellent comedic actresses, and, along with strong performances from a solid supporting cast, save 'Connie and Carla' from Mundane and push it right up alongside movies like 'But I'm a Cheerleader' in terms of quirky likeability. The ending is too sugary for words, but all in all, this a very definite recommendation for fans of showtunes, comedy and all-round fun movies.

Excellent.

5.0étoiles sur 5 I just adored this movie..., Jui 11 2004
Par Gina K (Blackstone, MA United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I was so pleased that this movie was so entertaining. I must admit, I only went to see it because of David Duchovny...I see "everything" he is in. After Full Frontal (which had it's good moments, but...) I really didn't know what to expect. I enjoyed the story so much, I went to see it twice and would have gone again if it was still playing in my area. I know the storyline has been used before, but I say a good thing can always be done again and still be good. Nia V. and Toni C. were fantastic, they were so wonderful. Can't wait to get the DVD...

5.0étoiles sur 5 Broader appeal than one might think., Jui 4 2004
Par "usareader" (Knoxville, Tennessee United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
Nia Vardalos does it again, in spades. This film manages to take a comedic farce and make it socially conscious, while simultaneously weaving in an engaging romantic comedy. Far from being a special-interest agenda film, Nia manages to address hard issues with compassion, yet reason. David Duchovony's concerned character asks a poignant question, "Why do you dress that way...is it just dress-up?" A good question, with a refreshingly honest answer. With a surprise or two, a truly blossomed performance from Nia, and a delightful Judy Garland reincarnation in Toni Collette, this movie inspires, questions, and answers in a way that most movies dealing with this subject do not.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Nice movie, bad target marketing, Jui 3 2004
Connie and Carla is a decent enough movie. I think Nia Vardalos is a brilliant physical comedienne (witness the way she is constantly bouncing off - literally - David Duchovny) and I will watch anything featuring the great Toni Collette. There are moments of pure comedy genius in this film. As noted elsewhere on these pages, C&C's 'audition' - featuring "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" - is the movie's high point. It's a wonderfully staged, spine-tingling piece of moviemaking.

Still, I have to wonder about Nia and her production team (Rita Wilson, et al), who so brilliantly marketed their previous film together. After finding a broad target audience with "My Big, Fat Greek Wedding," you'd think they'd want to go back and build on that. But marketing a movie about drag queens to the "Wedding" demographic was going to be a tough sell. The results bear that out. C&C barely cracked eight million dollars in the US box office receipts, despite a production and marketing cost of almost 5x that amount. Let's hope this movie finds its audience in DVD market. We need more of Nia.
