3.0 out of 5 stars Great Exercise in Character Development
Lost is a fantastic exercise in character development, but has a storyline that is so thin as to be almost nonexistant. It moves at such a glacial pace, that it could easily be be called "All My Children: The Tropics." Also, it has plot gaps that you could drive a truck through (or crash a plane through as it were).

I basically subscribe to the Joss Whedon...

I've always wanted to watch the show during its regular run, but I missed practically every episode and didn't want to watch those recaps and jump in midway. So, when this was released, I snapped it up immediately, aware of all the critical acclaim and the huge fandom, but more than a little doubtful--can a show really be that good?

My family nearly went through the entire series from Friday to Sunday...and we're not couch potatoes! The show is simply riveting...the characters are all deeply interesting, and the show has like 16--their interaction and past are unpredictable, and the show's pace is brisk, but also full of reflective, beautiful moments. There is not a single weak link in the cast.

Perhaps the most fun is the suspense as the island's mysteries become revealed, entangling the survivors in its web. You'll scream when an episode ends at the most crucial of moments, and you'll find yourself watching "just one more" over and over! With all of the clues dropped in each show, you can't help but discuss them afterwards among friends, family, and internet boards if you have the time.

I was also quite pleased with what bonuses were offered in the box set. It's wildly entertaining to see all the tricks employed to make the show shine in its finished form, and it is priceless whenever the cast members have something to share.

Funny, engrossing, intelligent, and highly addictive, this show and the excellent quality of the DVDs deserve hearty full marks!

I can't help but come online and leave a review for this show. It is by far the best written show I've seen in my lifetime so far. I got this boxset not really wanting to watch it, and ended up finishing the boxset in 3 days straight.
The characters have soo much depth. The story is fantastic and as the show progresses you are constantly being shocked and amazed. Truly a remarkable show it is a real refresher from the usual reality shows these days. A MUST WATCH. you will not be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh my Greatness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, April 11 2006

This review is from: Lost the Complete:S1 (DVD)
Well let me start off by saying "I have never"... I had seen a few clips of this series and it never caught my eye, i though it was some over exaggerated series about some crazy monsters on an island. When my sister got the first and second series i thought let me give it a try, and so i did...not realising that my life would change from the moment i started. I was on edge watching these series and i watched disc after disc. My friend and i sat for days until we had no more to watch, and now i feel lost........ i cant watch the rest because the next episode hasnt come out here yet and im dying???/// Im trying to track down the next series and also trying to find out how many series there are until its over. My friend and i sit talking for ever trying to figure out what is going to happen next cause we cant wait any longer for the next episode to screen here in South Africa. Please can someone help me track down the next series and tell me how many more series there are till its over.

Its the best series ever i cant even explain it beats all of them by far.

Thanks

4.0 out of 5 stars lost for words, Jan 20 2006

well...where to start? i was anticipating great things for the first series and i was not dissappointed. there was so much hype and excitement for the program and there was reason for this, the special way in which the program has been written and the immense tension from each episode was exruiciating! although many may say lost is corny and dragged out (i am not one to disagree) however it still pulls through these criticisms. i am sure the second series will be as awesome as the first and cannot wait

Living in Japan I tend not to see or hear about new series that hit the small screen and "Lost" was no exception, I didn't hear anything until I was back in Canada last summer. I saw one show, just one, and was hooked. So this box set was a welcome addition.

My only criticism is it is typical JJ Abrams fare, lots of twists, turns, and whoa's. In some ways it reminds me so much of "Alias" it isn't funny. However, this does not detract from my enjoyment. At last a TV show that is not just fluff. Season 2 DVD's are released WHEN?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series; Great DVD set, Sep 29 2005
By
This review is from: Lost the Complete:S1 (DVD)
Lost is simply a great series. This is a very character-driven show; well-written and filled with suspense. It's a show about a group people who end up on a mysterious island after their plane crashes. However, not everything is as it seems. Don't expect a run-of-the-mill show about a bunch of one-dimensional characters with nothing to do on an island; there is definitely a high level of drama and mystery mixed in. Each episode leaves you itching to watch the next. It's hard to give too many details with a show such as this, as I would not want to spoil the excellent plot.

The DVD transfer is fantastic, with the wide-screen HDTV format beautifully preserved. The sound is fantastic as well. The set is split over 7 discs; 6 for the show and 1 disc of bonus features. The bonus featues are definitely worth the watch if you're a fan. Buy this set, and I pretty much guarantee you will instantly become a rabid one (as I did.)

Well deserving of 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The TWIN PEAKS of the New Millenium!, Sep 6 2007

Ever since the early 90's (when TV peaked with TWIN PEAKS) had I to come across such an engaging Series! Weird (in a good way), Insightful and Intelligent - and with much better luck with scheduling and ratings.

The secret in my opinion: truly SMART writing; well-ahead planed plot and characters not only interesting but also one cares about to follow week after week!
Faith and Reason, Fate and Choice, Dogma and Intuition, Nature and Nurture, Good and Evil are in a constant dynamic equilibrium, raising everyday issues under extraordinary conditions to render all the hues discernible and debatable. Come for the story, stay for the Philosophy.

If you liked the X-FILES you will appreciate the mythology been interwoven with the action (instead of mythology episodes alternating with action episodes and, thus, pretty much ruining the rhythm of the series).
If you liked TWIN PEAKS you will appreciate the skewed reality and the blurry boundaries between reality and fantasy.

Although not by much, the 1st Season was the best of the three so far. The introduction of the characters with all the serendipitous path-crossing and the unpredictability of major characters getting killed made the difference.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost!, Mar 25 2007

(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Lost the Complete:S1 (DVD)
Hopes were not terribly high for "Lost," the action-drama about a planeful of castaways lost on a tropical island. "Gilligan's Island" all over again? Not quite. This mysterious show rapidly turned itself into a runaway hit. Mystery, drama, the supernatural and horror seep into this series, turning it into one of the most intriguing shows on television.

The series opens with a wrecked plane on a beach, surrounded by panicking people who manage to escape the wreckage. Jack (Matthew Fox) manages to group the refugees into a makeshift camp on the shore -- but soon they hear strange noises and see palm trees being trampled by a gargantuan monster. And when he ventures into the jungle, with the mysterious Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and junkie rocker Charlie (Dominic Monaghan), they find the still-living pilot. The pilot reveals that they are hundreds of miles off course, and no one will be able to find him. Then he gets eaten by an unseen monster.

Now the island is occupied by a motley band, including a strange warrior-sage with a knife-throwing knack, a traumatized con man, a pregnant girl whose baby holds a secret, a secretive Korean couple, a snobby rich girl and her exasperated brother, an Iraqi ex-soldier, and a "dude"-talking chubby guy who has a dark secret of his own. Despite Jack's best efforts, the group splits into two camps, and tensions grow between them.

And there are even worse things coming -- the survivors are not the only ones on the island. A possibly crazy Frenchwoman (Mira Furlan) is hiding somewhere in the jungle, and the murderous "Ethan" kidnaps and nearly kills two of the survivors. The island itself has mysteries -- mysterious monsters, voices in the woods, radio towers, a metal hatch in the jungle ground, and a string of numbers that bring madness and ill fortune...

Yes, it's a weird show. But in the midst of shallow sitcoms and endless reality TV, it's refreshing to see a twisty-turny show like this one. J.J. Adams, best known for "Alias," outdoes his first hit TV show with something totally different. The best way to describe it is as "Swiss Family Robinson," as written by Stephen King.

The gorgeous Hawaiian landscape is a contrast for such a dark storyline. Adams never reveals everything, which keeps up the suspense -- the mysterious monster (a dinosaur?) is only briefly seen by the characters, and nobody knows exactly what it is. Nor are we sure who has been there, or what is up with the island. Adams keeps viewers guessing by slowly peeling away the layers.

What's really interesting is that "Lost" is truly an ensemble show -- Adams gives every character a chance to shine, and flashbacks reveal what makes them tick. Some, like ex-con Kate, are a bit more mysterious than others, but some like the Korean marrieds and the haunted, smart-alecky Sawyer get a lot more dimension and humanity.

Matthew Fox is given a lot of attention, and he is a good actor. But it's the secondary actors that really catch your attention: Dominic Monaghan gives a simply amazing performance as Charlie, especially when Charlie goes through withdrawal, Jorge Garcia is equally good at comedy ("Dude, that was a Jedi moment!") and drama, and Terry O'Quinn is stellar as the enigmatic cubicle-worker-turned-jungle-warrior. Evangeline Lilly gives the debut performance of a lifetime, as tormented criminal Kate.

"Lost" is a well-written, well-acted show that brings a bit of mystery back into prime-time television. Creepy, funny, romantic, tragic and sometimes just weird, it's definitely worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Addicting, Mar 12 2006
By
Lindsay (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lost the Complete:S1 (DVD)
I was upon the impression that my friend was completely insane when she told me she had watched television for four days straight. She had told me she had rented 6 four-hour DVDs at a Blockbuster and that she could not stop watching it. You see...my friend is not a big TV watcher, so when she told me this, I had to ask what in the world she was watching. When she told me it was LOST, the TV series, featuring Domenic Monaghan, I wasn't interested - I thought it was merely some boring soap opera, but, as usual, my first impressions were completely wrong. When she finally convinced me to watch it (after about three weeks, I may add), I was stunned.
You see, I'm not a very big TV watcher, but when I saw the first episode of LOST, I wanted more. Before I knew it, I had watched the second one, and then the third, and then the fourth (not wanting to admit it to my friend)...followed by the next eight. I was so addicted to the seat-binding suspense that I could not stop watching it. The actors are amazing and the plot is just so out-of-this-world fantastic. In each episode you find out a little bit more about each individual character and how they got to be on the plane that crashed, leading them to the mysterious island that they are now stranded on. I'm hoping to rent the last few episodes of Season One and then hopefully find a way to watch Season Two (because I don't think it has come out on DVD yet).
This TV series is to anyone who loves great suspense, mystery, and sheer excitement. Believe me, even if you hate TV series (because, believe me, I did), once you watch LOST you will completely change your mind. This is one TV series that should win any kind of award imaginable - it's awesome, and, most importantly, highly addicting.

-Lindsay A., 15
