5.0 out of 5 stars bluest eyes of texas..., Mar 24 2004
This review is from: A Camp (Audio CD)
anyone who remembers the cardigans fondly or the haunting ballad 'the bluest eyes of texas' as performed by chloe sevigny in the film boys don't cry will definately want to check this cd out. even though i didn't pay the import price for my copy, i can almost understand why someone would shell out nearly thirty bucks for this virtually unknown gem. nina perssons is the underrated & ultimately talented voclaist from the band the cardigans. many of us remember the cardigans for their hit back in the late nineties called lovefool. to say that nina's solo work resembles anything quite like lovefool would be ludicrous as a camp is far more diverse & complex than any music i remember hearing from the cardigans. in fact, i'm almost tempted to order or listen to some of their older work now after hearing her fabulous work on a camp. nina perssons has a mellow, sweet voice which will appeal to many different types of music fans out there ranging from the young pop acts of today like michelle branch to lesser known women like a lori carson or karen paris from the innocence mission. persson's voice is as pure & innocent as one could ever hope on nearly every track here from the opening to the very end. this album may take a few listens for most people not familiar wioth persson's style or solo work but i guarantee you'll be hooked in literally no time. there are so many tracks to recommend that i hardly know where to start. there you have it! don't look for any particular favorites to try out but rather enjoy the album in it's entirety. you'll be glad you made the choice to purchase this album after you hear how amazing it truly is for yourself. although a camp is a delicate confection for an album, perssons draws upon only the genres or musicians/ writers to make her material stand out above the rest. nina encorporates jazz, pyschedelic undertones, & country western just to name a few. even the pickiest music lovers are bound to find something they like on this cd. give it a whirl today!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure form of Art, Jan 26 2004

I've been a fan of the Cardigans ever since their first CD release in USA and when i've heard that some band members were doing solo I was very anxious to hear them. I think that Nina's CD is art in its purest form. Each song is carefully put together like a collage to form a trully unique piece. I found my self experiencing different moods as I listened to each of the songs. Some other very good songs were actually not released on this cd. Songs such as "Charlie Charle", "My Misery is my Mystery", and "What the hell are you crying for?" but dont worry you can still hear these songs. For those of you who don't know Nina has a special website for her CD its : http://www.acamp.cjb.net/. There she has an option of listening the unreleased songs. I hope this review has helped you in some way.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful voice, Aug 4 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Camp (Audio CD)
I knew this album during my stay in Paris in winter of 2001. The French edition "Marie Claire" raved Nina Persson's voice " la plus belle du monde".I bought this CD from Amazon .com as soon as I returnd to U.S. It has remained one of my all time favorites since. Nina's voice is just like an angel's, so pure and innocent. Listen for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're not what I was after, but I'm happy with what I found, July 14 2003

I love this cd. I think Nina's voice is soothing and it compliments the dark undertones of the music. My favorite song off this cd is "Algebra." Most of the songs are great to listen to and sing along with. I also like the song "What the hell are you crying for" considering its a county-esque song and it should have been on this cd(it's a B-Side song, I just found it by luck). This cd pulls you in so many directions that its not as calculated as Nina's other group "The Cardigans." I so recommend this cd for any one who is looking for a poetic and dark yet sweet sound. I give it an "A+" all the way

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly Beautiful, April 15 2003

This review is from: A Camp (Audio CD)
Definitely one of my top 5 desert island cds. it took me a while to get into the album but each song is spectacular in its own way and this cd takes the phrase 'a must-own' to a new level.

who knew that nina (through a wicked collaboration with Niklas Frisk) could pull something like this off? i cant wait to see what else she puts out next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply stunning, April 12 2003
This review is from: A Camp (Audio CD)
This album took me a while to get into (about a year), on the first listen i thought some songs were gut wrenchingly boring or just odd. I usually give CDs a few listen before i actually dismiss them, but i guess i was busy at the time and i tossed this one aside. one day i decided to play it while studying and half way in, i just had to completely stop what i was doing; i was utterly mesmerized by how awesome the album was.

I started to really pay attention to the songs and i realized that the arrangements were just absolute genius. Like most music, it's the ones that are an 'acquired taste' that can always withstand the test of time. This is truly a gem, a must own for any serious music fan. Who knew that with some clever collaborations, Ms Persson could crank something like this out? she joined the Cardigans on a whim and is mainly the lyricist. She is definitely something else.

Standout tracks: Frequent Flyer, I Can Buy You, The Same Old Song, Elephant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure and beautiful, Feb 26 2003

This album is beautifully recorded, the songs are wonderful and melodic, and Nina's voice is, as always, captivating and soulful. The arrangements, particularly on "I Can Buy You", "Algebra" and "Song For The Leftovers" are wonderful and fantastically performed. There are a few rockers, and a couple of covers ("Walking the Cow" which was also performed by fIREHOSE and Paul Westerberg's "Rock 'N' Roll Ghost"), but personally I love this album for it's softer, more romantic side.

Buy this. I can say nothing more - it's excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Comments (review generally for I Can Buy You), Jun 29 2002
This review is from: A Camp (Audio CD)
I would give this 4 stars because there were some parts that I didn't like too much, but even those songs somehow made their way into my head for a bit. With that tiny (and I mean tiny!!) exception, it would be 5 stars- the good songs on this record are really good, and because of them I couldn't give it 4 and feel just.

I was drawn to the Cardigans by Lovefool a few years ago, and little by little I realized how incredible Nina Persson was- I always liked her vocals, but there were songs she wrote which I related to totally (which I will not be talking about in this review).

The first single "I Can Buy You" is wonderfully melodious and catchy- but understand that despite this description, it is separate from the teen pop for the masses scene (which I like hearing on the radio sometimes, but this is even better).

The only thing I regret is that while I ordered this here, my friend got it at Virgin Megastore when it came out, and his copy includes footage/ video that is not on the copy I have.

"Frequent Flyer", "I Can Buy You", "Song for the Leftovers", and "Algebra" are my main attractions to this, and "Bluest Eyes In Texas" is pretty nice too. Interesting side note: I think that song's on the soundtrack of Boys Don't Cry.

You know what? Form your own relationship with the music. Aside from the fact that it is tiring to do so, it's not very effective for your later enjoyment to infiltrate your head with preconceived notions of what something is going to be like or should be like.

This CD is really amazing. The Bluest Eyes in TX is one of the best pop songs I have ever heard (the A Camp version...not the original). A few tracks in the middle are a little week but 80% of these songs are the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. You can't get the melodies out of your head after you listen to it once. The best tracks are Bluest Eyes, I Can Buy You, Frequent Flyer, Angel of Sadness & song for the Leftovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album in recent years for me!, Feb 7 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Camp (Audio CD)
I actually bought this as a gift to my wife, but since then I've become completely absorbed with this CD. The songs are great, there are 14 songs and no weak ones, which is very rare. And her voice is so beautiful, musical, touching... This really strikes some inner chord in me! I definetely recommend it!!!
