5.0 out of 5 stars Winger's best of the best. This is a must-have greatest hits collection
Winger scored a top 40 hit in 1991 with the ballad, Miles Away and it's one of the best power ballads of the early 90s. It doesnn't measure up to the classic Home Sweet Home or November Rain by Guns N' Roses- which is the ultimate power ballad. Winger scored a major hit with Headed for a Heartbreak and they scored another hit with Seventeen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but could've been better
In the eighties, former Alice Cooper bass guitarist Kip Winger threw together his own band - appropriately called Winger. With the changes in the music industry these days, and the fact that there were so many "hair rock" bands in the eighties, Winger is often overlooked. What a shame, because their music was certainly excellent. Read on for my review of the...

5.0 out of 5 stars This isn't wimp rock, this is true talent from the band, Sep 15 2004

I have all three Winger albums - Winger, In The Heart Of The Young, and Pull and bought their greatest hits cd. They are all good. Kip Winger, Reb Beach, Paul Taylor, and Rod Morgenstein put a lot of time and effort and care into all the songs and it shows when you listen to all four albums. On the other hand they are very talented musicians. Also, I love the guitar sounds on each album because they really stand out. I'll drink a beer to this greatest hits compilation.

Shawn

4.0 out of 5 stars Melodic Glam Metal, April 30 2004

Winger was one of the top heavy metal bands of the late 80's/early 90's. They mixed the over-the-top sleaze of bands like Poison and Motley Crue while adding melodic touches. I think this is an exellent compilation, but there are too many songs from Pull, Winger's worst record. The compilation should stick to their more glam-oriented stuff. The glam stuff, however
is some of the best glam Iv'e ever heard. For any 80's metal fan, I'd reccomend this, for it is melodic glam at its best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Winger's best, Oct 2 2003

This is a good compilation of songs, however, most of them don't sound very good. Winger had two good albums; Winger and Pull, and most songs are from these two albums, but the rest isn't very good. My two favourites are Heading For A Heartbreak and Spell I'm Under.

Read on for my review of the compilaion.

PROS:
-The big hits (Madalaine, Seventeen, and Headed For A Heartbreak) are all here for your listening pleasure, so if you're a casual fan of the band who just wants the hits, you're likely to be pleased.
-Like many bands of the day, Winger was able to shell out awesome hard rockers, as well as some teary-eyed balleds which were also excellent.
-There is an unreleased track.

CONS:
-The compilation goes in reverse chronological order... Oh well, I guess it's better than going in no order at all.
-The unreleased track is pure garbage in two ways. One, as another reviewer put it, it sounds like a second-rate Soundgarden rip-off. Two, it's just a ploy to sell more records (even a child would probably know this.)
-Less popular and lower quality albums tend to be overemphasized here for some reason.

OVERALL:
This ain't The Very Best Of Winger! I suggest holding off to see if another compilaton becomes available, because this one will only do justice to very casual fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winger ROCKS!, Aug 23 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Very Best of (Audio CD)
For anyone new to the Winger sound, this album is a great "sampler" of their music. For a long-time fan like me, this album is terrific for offering the highlights from their previous albums (any die-hard fan would probably vote to have ALL of their songs on this album but this collection does offer the most well-known songs). In addition to hearing all my old favorites, I loved the new recording "On the Inside" done in 2001 when this compilation was made and also enjoyed track #7 "Hell to Pay" (an outtake from 1993's "Pull" -- I don't know why this awesome song didn't appear on that album -- it ROCKS in classic Winger fashion). This album just makes me wish all the more that the band would re-unite and start releasing more of their brand of kickass music!

4.0 out of 5 stars All the Winger you'll need..., Mar 14 2003
This review is from: The Very Best of (Audio CD)
I was never a big Winger fan back in the late 80's/early 90's. I liked most of the singles but never bought anything by them, so I was happy when I saw this cd. Hardcore fans might disagree, but this compilation contains all the Winger most people will ever wanna hear: 14 songs from their 3 albums, an outtake and a newly recorded track. Reb Beach is an awesome guitarist and the rest of the band are all great players too. These guys are/were one of the most talented bands around (even if they sometimes wrote cheesy stuff like "17"). Too bad an entire generation got their opinion of this band from Beavis & Butt Head instead of listening to the music.

3.0 out of 5 stars could have been better, Oct 3 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Very Best of (Audio CD)
Winger never had any five star albums but they do have some good little gems.Madalaine is the one that got me interested back in '88.I picked this one up for junkyard dog(heavy rocker) and madalaine(pop gem).Other worthy notables are heading for a heartbreak and seventeen. You can see the transformation in songwriting between "Winger" and "Pull".Battlestatioons would have been great here and a few more from "Winger".I never cared that much for the second album. There was a cool little solo that preceeded another song on thisalbum that could have been included.I think "In the heart of the young" lacked the solos and power and with an axe-master like Reb, it should have rocked more.
