....but all hopes were dashed when they said, "Action!"
The first "Weekend at Bernie's" was an absolute hit. A cult classic comedy loaded with humor, crazy situations, and kept the audience involved the entire time. "Weekend at Bernie's Part II" had some great moments, but this movie seemed to go in the wrong direction.
To make a sequel enjoyable,...

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong DVD, Mar 3 2012
This review is from: Weekend at Bernie's II (DVD)
I really wanted to purchase "Weekend at Bernies 1 DVD" but I received "Weekend at Bernies 2" instead. I was sure that I ordered "Weekend at Bernies 1" but I could be mistaken. My advice to anyone wishing to purchase this DVD from Amazon be extra extra sure that you request the right one.

Anyone want the DVD "Weekend At Bernies 2" ?

I suffered through this movie at work the other day, because we had some down time, and I didn't have a book with me. It must be a big hit with severe head injury survivors, but I don't know who else would waste their time with this crap.

The movie has two jokes than run the entire length, and neither are funny. Watch Bernie's corpse slam into things, and worse, watch Bernie come to life and dance when music is playing. Ho ho. Perhaps our military would find this film useful in interrogations.

If your idea of great comedy is watching a middle aged man dance the limbo for two hours, occasionally falling down, or banging his head into something, then this movie was made for you.

....but all hopes were dashed when they said, "Action!"
The first "Weekend at Bernie's" was an absolute hit. A cult classic comedy loaded with humor, crazy situations, and kept the audience involved the entire time. "Weekend at Bernie's Part II" had some great moments, but this movie seemed to go in the wrong direction.
To make a sequel enjoyable, the viewers need more from the first film to make a connection. Only Richard, Larry, and Bernie were back. Where were many of the major characters from the first film?? The mob boss, the girlfriend who was fooling around with Bernie, and Gwen, who was Richard's love interest, should have been back to build the story. Even some of Bernie's beach pals (remember the nut who wanted his car?) could have made cameos.
This time, however, things changed for the worse. Barry Bostwick was essentially the "new" Paulie (who was the hit man in part I) and did a horrible horrible job. Paulie should have returned in some way or form. Can you say prison breakout?
Instead of Richard having a love interest or continuing things with Gwen, this time it was Larry trying to make it with the girl on the island. HUGE mistake, as there was no chemistry or any sense that the relationship might have worked. Larry seemed way to silly to even attempt date or romantic scenes!! Not even close to believable.
I fully agree with one viewer who suggested that Terry Kiser (Bernie), who was hilarious when he was alive, should have been in Part II in a flashback mode or something playing the part of the living Bernie. He was great in the first one and had very little chance to improve the part this time.
The two clowns who were chasing Bernie's body around and carried out the voodoo were terrible. The whole idea of voodoo was super silly, except for it giving Bernie a chance to move around a bit and not be a lifeless corpse the whole time.
Also, the soundtrack for Part II was awful! The first one had great party/beach music. Why not capitalize on that? Who could forget the "some like it hot/cold/never know" song from the first one? Just another example of how the writer-turned-director (he wrote the first and directed this one) helped make this movie tumble.

WAB fans should still see it but true comedy happened in the first film.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst movies ever made, April 11 2002

I'm stunned that someone actually green-lighted this movie. I'm even more stunned at the fact that I paid real money to see this movie in a theater when it first came out. They try to breathe life (pardon the pun) into the already played-out premise of carting a dead body around, by giving Dead Bernie the power to walk via voodoo. The ENTIRE move is hung on that premise, with predictably lame results. Man, where do I start? The silly, repetitive "island" music that plays every time Bernie shuffles into a scene? The amazingly stupid, pop-eyed expression Andrew McCarthy wears throughout the film, like he's auditioning for the white-boy Mantan Moreland role (hard to believe that just a few years earlier, he put in a sensitive, complex performance in "Pretty In Pink". This movie buried him in Hollywood)? The seemingly tacked-on "Jamaican Princess" love interest scenes, a woman who in reality would never have anything to do with those two idiots? I laughed out loud exactly ONCE during this film: near the beginning, when two vacationing soul brothers wander into a voodoo ceremony, mistaking it for a party. One of them walks up to a worshiper in the throes of a voodoo spell, and yells, "Yo, Homes, where's the Scotch?" Other than that, this movie is a yawn festival. Avoid at all costs, and definitely don't pay to see it, like I did.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous but funny, Oct 7 2010
This review is from: Weekend at Bernie's II (DVD)
If you've seen Weekend at Bernie's and you enjoyed it's slapstick humour, you'll also enjoy this one. It'll never make my top 50 favourite movies list but I love it for what it gives me, which is a very enjoyable couple of hours or nothing but silliness and laugh out loud humour. The premise is completely wacky, even more than the first movie, yet I found it to be more packed with fun. I can't stop laughing when I watch it. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars sequel surpasses the original and moves in a very different direction, Aug 30 2007

you know,I'm a bit mystified.this sequel to the original has an even
lower rating.for my money, this movie surpasses the first one.we have
the three main characters,Richard and Larry(Jonathon Silverman,Andrew
McCarthy)and of course,the dead guy,Bernie(Terry Kiser)however,the
difference is this movie has a better story, and although it could still
be called a black comedy,it has a lighter tone to it,and is
hysterically funny quite often, thanks largely to Kiser, who brings a
whole nother(i swear it's a real word)dimension to the dead guy.there
are more pratfalls and physical comedy in this movie.there is a sort of
running gag involving Barry Bostwick"s character, which is quite
amusing.i won't say too much about the plot, except that it continues
pretty much right from where the first one ended.also, this movie is not
a rehash of the first, but rather goes in a different and very
creative(in my mind)direction.as a matter of fact,i kinda was hoping a
third one would be made, just to see what they could do with it.anyway,i
give "Weekend at Bernie's 2" a strong 4/5

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better Zombie movies, Jan 9 2005
By

As with any sequel, the viewers of the original movie may be a tad disappointed because the formula may have changes some. However this movie can stand alone as one of the outstanding zombie movies like "My Boyfriend's Back" (1993).

Seems we have not seen the last of Bernie. Turns out he embezzled a couple of million dollars and others are out to get it. Our old friends Larry (Andrew McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman), accused of being accomplices, found the key and once again are off to the islands. Mean time back at the ranch Bernie is undergoing a voodoo process to track down the deposit box; this process leaves Bernie a dancing fool.

3.0 out of 5 stars Abra-cadaver!!!, May 5 2002

WAB2 was not quite as enjoyable as the classic original. This is mainly due to the fact that Bernie, being a corpse for the entire film, is a cipher--little more than a prop. The physical comedy is still there (keeping WAB2 from being a total waste), but I wish we could have had more of Bernie BEFORE he died (perhaps a flashback sequence). His cantankerous (pre-death) behavior in the first WAB cracked me up. Terry Kisor is a talented actor (see his performance in "Friday the 13th Part VII, the New Blood"), so I can only hope they would consider making "Weekend at Bernie's: Episode One" which would expand on what Bernie was like when he was still alive. They obviously can't make another sequel; Bernie would be pretty decomposed by now.
