UNEVEN "COMEBACK" STILL CONTAINS MANY OVERLOOKED GEMS!!
on January 31, 2004
Two years after its initial release, I finally got around to buying MJ's "comeback" album - for the longest time I resisted it, fearing the worst and...for the most part, my fears were true: the bulk of this album (like the first three tracks) is chock full of the kind of busy, cluttered, cold, clinical, overproduced, tuneless cr*p that shows MJ has lost his way...BUT then when you listen to the album and dig a little deeper, you'll find several undiscovered, overlooked gems, such as the handful of midtempo smooth soul shufflers BREAK OF DAWN, HEAVEN CAN WAIT, BUTTERFLIES, etc. - these tracks are really some of the BEST songs MJ has ever done - great production and MJ takes a moment to RELAX, BREATHE, and really SING for a change - the results remind you why we loved MJ long ago in the first place when he was truly the "King of Pop" much less the World...the single YOU ROCK MY WORLD is really just "Rock with You 2001" but it still rocks - if MJ had edited down this record (does he really need 16 tracks?!) and cut away the padding, this would have been a much tighter album overall - but I can't help wonder why Sony would only release ONE single/video from the record - why spend $30Million and many years if you're NOT going to even bother to PROMOTE the thing? I guarantee if MJ had released either BREAK OF DAWN, HEAVEN CAN WAIT, or BUTTERFLIES as a single with a sexy video, this CD would have sold much, much better - the choice to release "CRY" as a single in Europe-only was a) a big mistake and b) pointless...One final note: pedophile charges aside, I've always thought it was tragic that MJ's voice seemes to have shrunk as he's matured - rather than develop, MJ's voice seems to be become more STRANGLED and GUTTERAL with each passing year - why not just OPEN YOUR MOUTH and SING like the ten-year-old child within you USED TO BE? MJ truly is PETER PAN...and not in a good way. I cant' help but wonder what kind of album MJ might create if he was more open to outside producers/writers/etc. - he seems so hermetically sealed within his own world of lackeys and yes-man...sad - and don't get me started on THAT FACE?! Judgements aside, if anyone else was making this music, they'd probably be hailed as the "next big thing..." -
