5.0 out of 5 stars Speechless!!!
This album is more different than any album in the music business and better. She earns a Grammy for her singing. The sound of her voice makes it seems it she's just being herself and is not trying to be all perfect like Ashanti.

"Southern Hummingbird" is a quiet a deceiving name for Tweet's debut album. After all, she is from Rochester. Being Missy Elliot's best bud must be very beneficial.

Tweet's collaboration with Missy Elliot on "Oops (Oh My)" proved to be one of this year's best R&B jams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good debut, July 12 2004
This review is from: Southern Hummingbird (Audio CD)
When Tweet first came onto the scene, she was mercilessly compared to Ashanti. In fact, all the attention shoved on Ashanti hurt her in music sales. Although Ashanti may have the edge sales-wise, musically, she ain't got nothin' on Tweet. Tweet's voice is very soulful and different from most of the current crop of R&B divas. Although she is friends with Missy Elliott and Timbaland, she only works with them on a handful of songs. She was determined to use her own talents and not be a producer's puppet, and it paid off. Southern Hummingbird is full of terrific songs. Her voice works well in every song, and she has a lot of skill when it comes to songwriting. Her most popular song, "Oops (Oh My)" is one of the many standouts. Off the top of my head, the best ones are "My Place", "Smoking Cigarettes", "Always Will", "Motel", "Heaven", and "Drunk". What makes the album even better is a bonus track from Missy Elliott, and "Big Spender" is a good bonus for a terrific album.

I recommend getting this CD. Hopefully, her next CD will get her the respect she deserves. She is a star in her own right and shouldn't have gotten all those comparisons to Ashanti. In the meantime, enjoy her terrific first album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music With Feeling!, July 11 2004

I found the album to be very experessive without the overdone feel of most music out there. Her singing is proof that one doesn't have to strain and hollar to be convincing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tweet still has so much to say; returns with 'It's Me Again', Jun 22 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Southern Hummingbird (Audio CD)
Tweet, where ya at? "Southern Hummingbird" was probably one of the best albums of 2002. To this day I have no idea where the Tweet/Ashanti comparisons came from. It was made a big deal because both of their albums debuted on the same day. For one, Ashanti has very little vocal range and a uncomfortable voice. Singing, talking, laughing, whatever. It's just uncomfortable to hear anything coming from her mouth. And just about every single she's come out with is sampled, proving her production team is too lazy to be original for a clearly untalented artist. Maybe Murder INC. knew just what they were doing then..?

Tweet's soulful voice is just what R&B needed. I never heard "Smoking Cigarettes" on the radio, though it was suppose to be the third single to her debut album. After 'Hummingbird' the only thing I've heard from Tweet is her collaboration with Trina and a few songs on Missy's "Under Construction". Oh, and "Thug Man" from the 'Honey' soundtrack, which reminded all Tweet fans not to forget about her, she'll be back 'Again'.

Look for Tweet's sophmore sure-hit, 'It's Me Again' in 2004! She's back!

I don't know how people can give this cd bad reviews. They must be hearing a different album. I would recomend Tweet way above Jill Scott who doesn't deserve all of the hype about her first (crap, boring) album. She is also much better than Ashanti. They shouldn't even be compared. Tweets harmonies are so pretty. Every song on this is amazing. Can't wait for her next release

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tweet fan PATIENTLY waiting for sophomore effort!!!, Mar 19 2004
This review is from: Southern Hummingbird (Audio CD)
I love Tweet!!! This cd was great, and the fact that she writes her own stuff adds to it!!! I love when artists rely on their ability and do not use their albums as a Who's Who in Music.

Buy this one and I GUARANTEE you'll want the next one!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great debut, beautiful voice, Mar 2 2004

My first musical love is r&b - soulful r&b and Tweet more than delivered that on her debut. I remember buying her disc at the height of Ashanti-mania and hoped that Tweet's album would get the recognition it so deserved but...anyway I got the album with no expectation that it would be a "typical Missy Elliot production" because I am not a huge Missy fan. I was overwhelmingly pleasantly surprised by the smooth grooves on this disc.

I think fans of Tweet are those who appreciate innovative GOOD GROWN FOLKS music not formulaic "hip pop" garbage. The only track I did not like is Drunk. The tracks that stood out are: Beautiful, Smoking Cigarettes, Motel, Always Will & Best Friend. I cannot wait for her sophomore effort.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tweet better, Jan 22 2004
By
This review is from: Southern Hummingbird (Audio CD)
"Southern Hummingbird" is a quiet a deceiving name for Tweet's debut album. After all, she is from Rochester. Being Missy Elliot's best bud must be very beneficial.

Tweet's collaboration with Missy Elliot on "Oops (Oh My)" proved to be one of this year's best R&B jams.

Not surprisingly, since it has an unique new beat that sticks, unlike Brandy's recent miserable foray into hip-hop experimentalism.

Who knew that a song about masturbation would launch a career of this promising diva-in-training?

What makes Tweet special is that, unlike other newcomers to the pop-soul arena like rival Ashanti, she is not only beautiful but also talented.

She produced most of the tracks on "Southern Hummingbird" and plays the guitar. Her lyrical ability is also distinctive and she shows-off her writing skills on the folk ballad "Motel."

At first listen, the album does not stand out. That is mainly because it starts out with a pointless intro, then enters into a segment of balladry. Ballads are rarely apt openers, unless you are Celine Dion.

"Smoking Cigarettes" is a repetitious song, to the point of annoyance. And "Always Will" showcases Tweet's warm voice.

Bilal duet

The low point of the album is the duet with Bilal "Best Friend," in which Bilal warbles like he is in pain - a lazy song that would've done the album a favour had it been left out completely.

Then the album picks up with "Boogie 2nite" and "Make Ur Move" - both up-tempo cheery tunes.

"Heaven" is a slow jam, a satisfying song with apt sound affects. "Southern Hummingbird" is heavy on low-groove. Songs like "Complain" and "Call Me" - which has a beautiful Arabian melody - are both sensual theme songs.

Out of the two debuting artist, Tweet wins the crown. Not only because her album has more captivating moments, but also because she seems to be able to deliver a product with her talents, rather than be a product of a some record company mogul.
