Bad song,

This review is from: Baby Einstein: Baby Newton Discovering Shapes (All About Shapes) (DVD)
I decided to buy this video because a friend owned it. I was disappointed to discover that the version i purchased (the newer one) had a different song and a much more digital appproach to it. Not nearly as entertaining. Furthermore, the song is hard to learn (especially the French version) as the lyrics don't seem to quite fit. Bad move.

My Baby Loves It!,

This review is from: Baby Einstein: Baby Newton Discovering Shapes (All About Shapes) (DVD)
My son is only 6 months but absolutely loves this movie. He watches from the floor or his entertainment center for more than half of it. I also run a day care out of my house and my 15 month old who doesn't sit still for anything loves this one best. While I like the all classical approach we must face that kids love cheesy songs so I think the shapes song is a hit. I enjoy all of the movies I've seen so far and I use the language library to teach my son German but as for him this is by far his favorite.

Disappointing experiment by the BE Folks!,

Forget the plush puppets, enticing visuals, and enchanting classical music of the other Baby Einstein videos. This one does not follow the BE formula. Instead, it is an animated presentation with an original song that is played repeatedly, assuring the viewer that the (albeit untalented) singer "knows his shapes." Computer generated crayons draw a clown out of shapes, and he becomes a more dimensional computer graphic. What's the problem? I noticed that my son did not enjoy this show as much as the others. He prefers the more engaging BE vidoes with puppets, changing scenes, and classical music. (E.g., Baby Galileo). I purposely buy BE videos because they are NOT flatly animated with uninteresting music. Other than the fact that baby didn't care for the video, I found the visuals uninteresting and the song about shapes very annoying. I recommend Baby Shakespeare or Baby Van Gogh instead of this one & hope that the BE people learn from this mistake.

In looking at some previous reviews it looks like the DVD received 5 stars when people went by their children's reaction. When people reviewed it from their perspective the rating was lower. I concur that this is our son's favorite while I like some of the older versions in the series better. Since these productions are not aimed at adults I give it 5 stars. Our son talks about or laughs at nearly every scene in this video. While there are highlights in all of the other Einstein videos none so fully engage him as this one. It's not for children under 12 months and our son didn't really take to it until around 18 months but now he can't get enough. Parents, target this one for 1 1/2 - 3 year olds and don't worry if you don't like it as much as Baby Mozart.

The Worst One I've Seen Yet!,

We got this for our daughter's 2nd birthday, as she really enjoys the other DVDs in the Baby Einstein line. She likes this one too, but it is really a departure from the other BE DVDs we've seen. First of all, there is the cheesy original song "I Know My Shapes"...they should have just stuck to the classical music entirely. (Isn't that one of the ideas the company was founded on to begin with? But that was BD, BEFORE DISNEY. Now, I have nothing against Disney, but please don't fix what's not broken!!) Then, there's the computer animation of the crayons and the clown. A clown puppet (like the other characters in this line of videos) would have been more endearing. And the crayons just don't belong! If I had seen this before buying I would have chosen another title. If you're still looking for a new BE DVD, I would recommend Baby Van Gogh, which really helped our daughter learn all of her colors well before the age of 2, or Numbers Nursery (even though it only goes up to 5).

THE BEST IN THE BABY EINSTEIN SERIES!!!,

I can't believe this DVD only has 3 stars! This DVD is my daughter's absolute favorite in all the Baby Einstein series & the Sesame Street ones she has. She LOVES the animated clown and laughs when he rings the triangle or uses the circle as a hula hoop. She first saw this DVD at 9 months and it has continued to be her favorite.I read another review that said "bring back the toys." Well, since seeing this DVD, the toys bore her and she's no longer interested in Baby Mozart, Bach or Beethoven. She wants to learn! Between the fun animated clown and crayons, the pupets and the catchy music, I think this is the best DVD Baby Einstein has made! "I know my shapes, Oh yes, I do..."

My daughter LOVES it!!!!,

Wow .... I read some of the other comments and we have some tough parents out there. My 11 month old daughter loves the shapes dvd and has since about 7 months old. She dances to the music especially the shapes song and I'm glad it repeats because it seems to be her favorite part. I also find it very easy to sing a long, even though its mostly talking, and my daughter gets a big kick out of it.Of course she can't tell me yet why she likes this one best out of all the Baby Einstein DVD's but I think it is the computer animation that's always moving around ... it keeps her captivated. Some of the parents out there should remember that these video's are for our childrens pleasure and learning experience and not ours.

The WORST Baby Einstein I've Seen,
By Mary Frances Hemm (Fayetteville, AR) - See all my reviews

It's horrible! There is WAY too much computer animation. Plus, repeating an entire segment/song is not a good idea for young children -- that's boring. I thought we needed every Baby Einstein DVD. But I was wrong. My daughter would much rather watch some of her other Baby Einsteins than this one. Don't waste your money!

I believe criticism should be accompanied by at least one suggestion for improvement. The criticism comes first. Disney has provided an excellent example of what NOT to do when you buy a concept. The hand of Disney in this offering has left nothing buy dirty fingerprints on the video screen. Unappealing clowny images, really boring conceptions, and downright insultingly lousy music mar this show from beginning to end. They have totally ignored the tone and feeling which has made Baby Einstein so special, in favor of glitzy production, which completely misses the mark. No Disney, louder and flashier is not necesarily better. We literally cannot get through this video, though we have tried a few times. It is the only one of the series that our child doesn't seem to enjoy. Okay, a suggestion.Shapes are a valid subject for the Baby Einstein series. The concept has been wasted here. How about a remake of a shapes video for this series? This time perhaps Disney will back away, and allow Julie Clark to create it in the tradition of her other excellent shows. |
