4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome debut metal album, Sep 17 2003

I first heard the title track off of Sirens when the late Joe Anthony (a San Antonio DJ known as "The Godfather" of rock-n-roll) played it on the air. I was immediately captivated by the piercing operatic singing of Jon Oliva, and the awesome metal guitar riffs of the late Criss Oliva (R.I.P.). It's unusual that this album didn't get more recognition, it's good through and through. 'I Believe' is another great track as well, with its SciFi lyrics and awesome guitar work by Criss.

5.0 out of 5 stars CRISS OLIVA LIVES ON....., Jan 20 2003
By
Timothy B. Fling "Socket Rules!" (York, PA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sirens (Audio CD)
This is the one that started it all! As most of you already know, Savatage went on to become one of the most prolific and diverse "operatic metal" acts of our generation. Forget all that highbrow posturing and admit that this simple album started it all! In 1983 brothers Jon and Criss Oliva produced their brilliant EP "Sirens", creating a powerful sound that was widely imitated by their contemporaries. The title track is easily the most recognized Savatage tune even today, and sets the standard for legions of aspiring metal songwriters. Evocative moody lyrics, howling vocal passages, grinding guitars (with a spooky refrain) and a rhythm section like an avalanche make this one all too real. "Who are those women? Are they real? Is this just some crazy dream?" It's all in there brother!
Also catch the end vocal on "Scream Murder". You can actually feel Jon Oliva's screams filling an auditorium illuminated by twelve thousand Bic lighters! All the later successes of this band live in the shadow of this first release, especially considering the tragic loss of Criss Oliva so early in life.
Long Live the Trans-Siberian Orchestra!

5.0 out of 5 stars NIGHT!, Aug 22 2001
This review is from: Sirens (Audio CD)
Like Days of purgatory by Iced Earth, this album is chock full of songs IN THE NIGHT! The first song is Sirens, which is full of nighty goodness. Holocaust has the chorus "Are you by the NIGHT?" And he screams it out. Any one who screams out NIGHT is a great almighty man. Then there's "I Beleive" which raises the question: Are we alone? Then there's RAGE. Almighty headbangin' classic! On the Run is next, full of 80's metal goodness IN THE NIGHT! The next song is Twisted Little Sister (No connection to the band). Good ol' perverted song. Then, my favorite song off the album, Living For The NIGHT. Just a great song because it contains the word NIGHT in it. Then there's Scream Murder. Fine horro song with a gallopying rythym in the NIGHT! Then, the great ballad, Out On The Streets. Wonderful album. I'm only doing the actual old album, not the added 2 songs. Right up there with "Kill Em All." NIGHT NEVER DIES!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Savatage album., July 31 2001
This review is from: Sirens (Audio CD)
I remember the first time I heard of Savaage. I was 10, and my English friend Andrew was letting my brother or my dad borrow some albums. I think the album was Streets. I can't quite remember the songs. I am looking forward to getting it. Anyway, 5 years later, I go into my local store and look around. I see a Savatage album. Poets and Madmen. I loved it, so I went out to find more. I got Hall of The Mountain king, and now this.

THIS ALBUM ROCKS! Made in 1983, It has the good old thrash of the 80's, yet it's a little darker to not make it dated. "Sirens," "Holocaust," and "Rage" are my favorites. Criss Oliva's solos really rip. And I love Jon's excellnt lyrics and vocal range. The only problem is that it's too short. The original album with the 9 songs was only 35 minutes. Even with the added 2 songs, you want more. 2 great ballads also are on this album. I liked "Out on the Streets" more than "Lady in Disguise." I really want to get more of their albums. Oh yeah, might I say, this is their very first album. Very good songs, excellnt riffs, great rythyms. What more could you ask? ENJOY!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Early Diamond, April 1 2001
This review is from: Sirens (Audio CD)
This is a great heavy metal album whcih easily demonstrates the band's distintive melodies, vocals and superb guitar work. Take Hall of the Mountain King and Gutter and throw in Power of The Night and you have got Sirens in my opinion. I have this feeling that if you are a big Dio fan you will love this album. The only slight downer is the drum sound but it is only a slight quibble, it is an old recording!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sirens = Pure Punishment, Feb 8 2001
By
Masked Jackal (Ft. Lauderdale, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sirens (Audio CD)
First off, this is not for Sava-fanz who are expecting a "rock opera" sort of Savatage. This one is for those of us who love the thunderous, lightning fast riffs that made them one of the most underrated "Heavy Metal" bands ever. I love Savatage, and my advice to anyone who thinks "Hall Of The Mountain King" rips, must not allow "Sirens" to go unlistened to for another minute!!!

Sirens is the rawest, most explosive effort I've ever heard from them. It's a shame this CD hasn't recieved more praise.....It's right up there with "Kill'em All" from Metallica in my book.

There is only "one" downfall if you can call it that....It's too short. Sirens grows on you, and Criss O. let loose on this CD. His pure rawness, and aggression on this recording have yet to be matched in my opinion...."HOTMK" was close, but Sirens stands alone.

If there was ever a listing in the Metal Dictionary that read "Diamond In The Ruff",.....Sirens would be the definition.

ON THE RUN....RUN!!!.....RUN!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars There couldn't be a better beggining!, Sep 7 1999
This review is from: Sirens (Audio CD)
This is a masterpiece. A "kult klassik", as you'll read below. There isn't a bad song here. Sirens: early Savatage's hymn, they play it even nowadays; Holocaust: great lyrics about a great disaster, very angry vocals as in most of the songs; I Believe: don't be fooled by the slow beggining, the end is kinda hardcore thing, breathless; RAGE: raaaaaage!!!!!speed!!!!head-banging!!!!; On The Run: another rocker; Twisted Little Sister: oh this is funny, bizarre, makes me think of a sadomasoquism session; Living For The Night: hmmm... not bad but... redundant; Scream Murder: explosive bass!!one of the best in here; Out On The Streets: Savatage's heavy ballads rule!!!; Lady In Disguise: great ballad; The Message: a little redundant too...

As you see, in general it's a great album! Jon Oliva's vocals are... I can't find the word, my limited english knowledge doesn't allow me. They simply ROCK!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Olivas at their best!, May 24 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sirens (Audio CD)
I would've predicted Savatage to stomp Metallica into the earth with this album. "Kill 'Em All", released the same year, has nothing on this album. It's one of a kind, heavy as hell with blistering lead runs. It doesn't even bear comparison. It is truly original. Skip "Fight For the Rock" and pick this basher up!

This is one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. My first copy of it was on vinyl before it ever hit a major record label. Buy this one with confidence!
