Good fairy tales are so hard to find! This is one of them.,

This review is from: The 10th Kingdom (Full Screen) (DVD)
This miniseries is long but well worth watching and I can easily watch it over and over. It's a magical tale that's fun, has a great cast, plays on all the fairy tale angles, and yet unlike a Disney interpretation of a classic fairy tale, this one, like the original fairy tale, isn't all bright and happy and meant for children. It does have some happy moments, but it has some dark, adult themes too and I think was intended more as a fairy tale for adults and older children. The movie twists and turns and keeps you wondering what will happen next. The heroes are flawed but you love them even more for their struggles, and the villains are more than just evil bad guys. The story and the characters have some depth to them. The production quality is very good, especially considering it was a made for TV series. I wish it had done better in the ratings when it originally ran on TV because it didn't get the recognition it deserved and I believe Hallmark dropped their plans for a sequel because of the lukewarm TV reception. Overall, this movie really makes you believe in magic kingdoms, spells, enchantments, curses and even happily ever afters, but nothing comes without a price.

A thoroughly enchanting tale. I began watching it on NBC when it first aired and missed the third instalment. I didn't want to spoil it for myself, so I refused to watch the others and immediately bought it on VHS from ncb.com. I have since bought it again on DVD from amazon. Can you tell I love the movie??? Anyway, the characters are all fabulous. All have depth and all give sterling performances. My favourite scene (there are so many) is the courthouse (what a jury!). In fact I loved the entire farming village portion of the movie. The engagement ring is a real scene stealer - imagine a RING stealing scenes. That could only happen in a fairy tale! The "ratings bust" referred to in the editorial I believe came about because it was so long. Hard to get home every night for 6 nights at the same time to catch this epic. (Don't bother to mention 'Roots'. Those were different times and a completely different matter altogether). The saddest part of the lack of good ratings is that it will probably retard (or completely prevent) another instalment. If the Video/DVD is selling as well as I think it is though, who knows, we just might get a straight to DVD sequel. I certainly hope that Virginia keeps her subtle "promise", made at the end, of "... another story".

The greatest adventure of all time,

I just recently bought the 10th Kingdom from Amazon.ca and I must say that I fell in love with the movie. Fantastic actors, a great story, not to mention breathtaking scenery made this movie and outstanding adventure for all ages. I especially loved the the character "Wolf" played by Scott Cohen because he was original and completely hilarious to watch. I certainly hope that they do consider making a sequel because it was so magnificently done and I'm sure all of the fans of this incredible movie are as anxious as I am to continue this fabulous and enchanting story. By far one of the best movies ever...a definite must see!!!!!

My daughter has loved this movie since she was 10 years old. She's 19 now. She mentioned she would like to have it and I was fortunate enough to find it on amazon and gave it to her for Christmas. She was delighted and has watched it at least twice since receiving it. It's packed with an all star cast and if you love fantasy movies, it's a must see.

The one and only movie I can watch 100+ times!,

Before I start, I've found a couple spelling and grammar errors in some reviews here. Very annoying to see, especially since I'm fifteen (on mum's account) and I could point them out.The 10th Kingdom is just a magnificent movie all 'round. The cast is phenomenal, everyone fits just right! I was in London when I saw the mini series on TV and my family and I left before we could see the end, so we bought the six hour tape (which is missing four hours). I would definitely recommend this excellent film to anyone over the age of eleven or twelve. Some parts of the movie are a bit mature for younger children...and I'm sure most of them wouldn't be able to appreciate the movie as much as they could since the plot line might confuse them a little. It's best to wait 'till they're of a certain age where they can easily watch, understand and enjoy it. As for adults, this movie is a must-see and even if you've already seen it once or twice...trust me, once or twice is not enough! I've watched this movie over 30 times at least. Of course, you must be thinking "What, is she crazy? Doesn't she have anything better to do?" Well, obviously I do but that doesn't keep me from popping that tape into the VCR. Hopefully you found my review helpful! :)

Although this epic starts slowly with some very tedious escapades in New York, there is a payoff if you have the patience. The alternate world they fashioned is very rich and interesting, and John Larroquette actually delivers a hilarious performance as his character begins to lose patience with all the fantasy cliches the world is stocked to the brim with (normally, I find his acting somewhat anoying). I was rolling when he finally goes non-liniar on the frog. Scott Cohen delivers an awesome performance as the Wolf. I can't listen to "Whiter Shade of Pale" without thinking of swaying mushrooms anymore. :) I only gave it three because the sections of lameness that beg for the fast forward button.

DVD the best buy!,

I have watched the VHS which came in 3 separate VHS's for so long that the tapes wore out, I originally paid $60, when it first came out on VHS. The DVD was much cheaper and included 1/2hour more of the movie. Yes the movie is long to watch, but is well worth it. It is a very exciting fantasy with evil trolls, wicked queen, fairies and lots of characters from all the fairytales you were told as a child. I would not reccomend this for small children, far too scary. But for older kids and adults it's great.

There are two versions available on VHS. The original VHS advertised during the airing of the mini series on TV was great, all VHS copies released later(that I have found) have been highly edited to the point that at times I found the story line dificult to follow, confusing and in general a disappointment. I have yet to see it on DVD but hopfully it's complete.Deppending on the maturity level of your child or the maturity level you wish to encourage, this is not a kids movie, but is it realy any worse than sitting them down to watch shrek or bambi. Yes there is adult content, yes there is violence, and although I don't remember any actual swearing, they came up with some amusing alternatives. The general air of the movie is the funny light-heartedness of the brother grimms fairy tales we all know and love, but it also has parts that remind us that the original tales were not intended for children. Little red riding hood and the wolf did a wee bit more than just talk and pick flowers on their way to grandma's house.

Fairytales really do come true!,

What an amazing movie The Tenth Kingdom is! It combines beautiful scenery, many well-known actors and many of the stories we grew up with as children. Cinderella, Snow White and The Seven Dwarves, Rumpelstilskin, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk and more. It is the ultimate movie with all the fairytales combined! The best way to watch this movie is to stay up all night (if you can) to catch it all. It is incredibly well written, so real and funny. Without a doubt, this is my favourite movie of all time!
