If You love lyrics and melodies that stand the test of time and if you are also a lover of great singing, then this is a must have for your cd library. Barbra Striesand of course has always had THE most amazing voice no matter what decade she was recording in. This collection showcases ONLY SOME of the many reasons she is generally considered the greatest female vocalist of all time. If you are a new listener to this incredible woman's work, then you are in for a soaring experience. Tracks like He Touched Me, All In Love Is Fair, On A Clear Day, Memory, A Piece Of Sky and Some Day My Prince Will Come all from different decades will reveal to you just a few of the many incomparable vocal performances Streisand is known for. But don't stop here, the number of outstanding incredible performances left off this collection is astounding. If You have'nt heard Barbra's versions of Someone To Watch Over Me, The Shadow Of Your Smile, Make The Man Love Me, Just A Little Lovin', I've Never Been A Woman Before, I Won't Last A Day Without You, and Tommorro to name but a few ,then you may find yourself even more impressed than you will be after listening to this collection, if thats possible.. Clearly I love these recordings and no doubt you will too.
"Babs" is a 5-star artist and this has the potential to be a 5-star product. I'm more familiar with her "pop" songs and all the songs I want can fit onto a single CD. However, this is the only collection with all the songs I want, although spread over 2 CD's, and I found it on Amazon rather cheap. There are 40 songs and it's an excellent career overview and mixes songs from Broadway, films, duets and pop albums very well.
Note that there are 2 versions of this CD available with the same songs - one for North American and one for the UK. I found the UK version for cheaper on Amazon.
The reason for deducting 2 stars is that the remastered sound on the CD has been compressed too much and I feel that does a disservice to the artist and the music. She is known as a perfectionist and works with highly talented engineers and producers who aim for superior sound quality. Compressing the dynamics to raise the volume should be a no-no. If the original dynamics of the recordings had been preserved, I would give it a full 5-star rating.
Most people won't notice or care about the compression and will be very happy with this CD set, so I can recommend it to them. Audiophiles beware.
