5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic.
I recently picked up this album and loved it so much that I bought her newer album too. While there are some very good songs on "All of Our Names", for me, this is far and away the more complete work.

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars Starts off sharp
The lead-in track, "Around the Corner," is a super little pop tune with some unexpected clarinet (?) flourishes, but from there the album drops in originality step by step until finally it reaches the nadir of folk-rock cliches. But it ain't bad...at least there are real musicians and isntruments!

If anyone out there enjoyed Pater Malick's collaborative album "Chance & Circumstance" this work has a similar variety of songs and styles from the stand-out hit "Basement Apartment" to the initially quirky but ultimately superb "Lodestar" - a song that must be listened to the whole way through.

I'm a picky soul and there aren't too many albums that have made it 'uncut' onto my iPod, this is one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this record! You won't be disappointed., Dec 19 2003

This album is loaded with beautiful songs. It's a sort of rootsy sound with fabulous vocals and simple arrangements with subtle accents that add so much to the music. Great words too. I picked it up after a friend of mine went on and on about it and now I understand. This is a gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars a more earthy Sarah McLaughlin, Jan 4 2005

Sarah Harmer is more down-to-earth, and some would say, less self-centered, than fellow Cannuck femme singer Sarah McLaughlin. Her authenticity and musical sensibility is evident throughout this fine CD. The song-writing is also quite good.

I try to limit 5-star ratings to excellent discs (apparently unlike so many gushing fans of musicians on Amazon), but this one comes close... a refreshing antedote to cotton-candy MTV/MuchMusic fluff.
Cheers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply one of the best, May 11 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: You Were Here (Audio CD)
This is simply one of the best albums I've heard in a long, long time. Sarah Harmer is a hidden treasure. Her voice is so pure and uplifting, and the melodies of her songs stay in my head for days (in a good way!). I especially love "Lodestar" and "Uniform Grey." Now I'm off to buy her latest release... let's hope she keeps them coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Subtle, well-written, all-around great, Mar 24 2004

This album has all the hallmarks of a great musician. The tracks are diverse and each one is complex, but mostly in subtle ways. Sarah Harmer's vocal deliver is fantastic: expressive but in a natural way. The lyrics are poetic without being pretentious.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe nobody has written about this album, Mar 21 2004

I've had this album since it came out and I'm shocked no-one has reviewed it. This women is a wonderful songwriter and she's blessed with a beautiful voice. I heard "Basement Apartment" on some college radio station or other and fell in love with it, bought the album on the strength of that cut and wondered why Sarah wasn't already a huge star. Standout cuts: "Basement Apartment", "Coffee Stain", "Capsized" and my favorite song that whole year "Don't Get Your Back Up". The entire album is a joy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Canadian folk., Oct 7 2003

As I was turned away at the door from a sold-out Sarah Harmer show in DC a few months ago, I overheard a fellow outside the club saying to his companions, "How could this show possibly sell out! Who knows about Sarah Harmer besides me and my friends??" I guess I felt the same way, or I would've purchased tickets ahead of time.

In short, Sarah Harmer is not Canada's little secret any more -- her sweet, heartbroken folk songs are getting wider and wider exposure in the US. Her beautiful voice and her heartfelt lyrics rival another Canadian Sarah (Ms. McLachlan to you) and this debut album shows what a phenomenal songwriter she is. You will not be disappointed by this album.

However, if you'd like to see Sarah Harmer perform live, learn from my mistakes: by your tickets in advance.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD lives in my car, Aug 9 2003
This review is from: You Were Here (Audio CD)
The lyrics are intelligent, the music is easy to listen to, and Sarah's voice is divine. This is easily the best CD I've bought in the past five years. (And, yes, I'm proud that Sarah's Canadian.)
