5.0 out of 5 stars This is for every woman who needs to find herself.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is for every woman who needs to find herself., Jun 16 2004
This review is from: The Vagina Monologues (Full Screen) (DVD)
I was involved in the stage version of this DVD and I was moved by how much we, as a cast, found ourselves through the show's progress. I got to know a lot of different types of women; lesbians, straight women, older women, younger women, and women of all different backgrounds. For those men in our lives who have treated us well, we learned to appreciate them even more... and for those who have and/or will have treated us badly we became more angry and willing to fight the abuse. We became Vagina Warriors and together we fought for the right to be a women... a right that some women don't have. We learned how to be proud of who we are, but more importantly we learned to find ourselves... and love the person we found inside. Our directors were men and so they were brought into our crazy rantings, but also became Vagina Warriors with us. Thank God for Eve Ensler. She has made us proud to be women again and not scared of who we were born to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for the Squirmish, Aug 31 2003

This video really delves into the facts about a woman's vagina. Most media just exploits female sexuality (think of how many nude women you see on t.v. versus men). However, Eve Ensler presents the vagina from different perspectives; she has stories in there from very old women to very young women (she even interviewed a group of girls that were 9-16 y/o). I became interested in The Vagina Monologues when one of my friends read part of the book to me, and it made me laugh. Then I watched the movie with my boyfriend, my roommate and her boyfriend. The guys were a little hesitant at first, but as the movie progressed, they really got in to it! The movie brought up topics of discussion between the sexes. And now, the guys still quote the movie on occasion!

5.0 out of 5 stars For Every Woman, May 27 2003

Having enjoyed the book, I decided to get the DVD. Eve Ensler follows the storyline of her book (The Vagina Monologues) to a tee. She tells each story exactly as the interviewee had told her, mimicking the voice and emotion so well that she became the interviewee. Between each segment of the onstage performance, there were video clips of the women Ensler had interviewed. They were women of all ages and varying ethnicities.

This was a neat show to watch. The frankness of the subject made me uncomfortable at first. But as the show progressed, I began to relate to these women on several levels. I felt joy, disgust, pain, and awe as Ensler told these stories. She has a great stage presence.

The Vagina Monologues isn't about vaginas per se, but about femininity and the taboos and myths that surround it. I recommend this DVD and the book to every woman, no matter what age.

4.0 out of 5 stars Please leave your inhibitions at the door, Jan 23 2003
This review is from: The Vagina Monologues (Full Screen) (DVD)
After hearing about the much acclaimed performances of The Vagina Monologues, but never having seen it myself, I was intrigued when I spotted this special on TV. I must advise, though: Leave your inhibitions at the door! At first I did not know whether to turn off the TV or to turn up the volume! I honestly did not think I was going to enjoy this, as it definitely is not my usual cup of tea, but this performance was profoundly intriguing. Never has so much been said so honestly about so many different women and their sexuality. At first glance, it may be shocking, surprising, appalling, but the in-your-face honesty and realism leaves you wanting more. I am not sure how a man's perspective on this would be, but as a woman it is delightfully candid. For the timid, borrow a copy first and see for yourself!

Eve Ensler's genious comes through in this heart-felt, witty special. One viewing of this has the power to change one's life, especially a woman's, forever. You will never view yourself or other women the same, and will learn to take pride in your womanhood. Leaves you wanting more. Should be a required viewing for all women and men alike.

You've never seen anything like Eve Ensler's VAGINA MONOLOGUES. I didn't see a live performance by any of the cadre of actresses that performed it live in Los Angeles. I did, however, view the DVD and was impressed and enlightened with the bold, frank, and often funny monologues by Ensler on this part of the female anatomy. These monolgues were filmed at several of Ensler's live performances. The attributes of the monologues also apply to Ensler's inverviews of many women on the subject, which are also in the DVD. I was so impressed after my first viewing of this DVD that I went out and bought it. As I plan to view Ensler's performance on DVD many times, of course I didn't want to keep paying the rental fees!

5.0 out of 5 stars Viva Vagina!!! =), Aug 20 2002

Eve Ensler is such an amazing woman! THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES is such a powerful, provocative, sensitive, wonderfully written, funny, moving, empowering, inspiring, and most importantly, an honest piece. It has come a long way from her one-woman show -- it has become the cornerstone of world-wide campaign to fight and end violence against women!!!

I've seen at least 30 live performances of the show -- and I must admit that it is really better seeing it live (preferably in an intimate venue) -- but seeing Eve Ensler herself deliver the piece is an altogether different experience! You realize that SHE personally interviewed these women whose stories are told through these monologues... and that just touches your soul in some deeper way.

If you haven't seen this show and there's one showing near your area -- I strongly encourage you to go see it (and this is for both women and men alike). Then go and get yourself a copy of this DVD!

Viva Vagina!!! =)

3.0 out of 5 stars ALL ABOUT EVE AND THE V-WORD...., Nov 12 2002
By

This review is from: The Vagina Monologues (Full Screen) (DVD)
You've got to hand it to Eve Ensler. She certainly knows how to break the ice. In her one woman show, she performs her own material in monolgues about her vagina and everyone elses. Some of the material was touching and humorous but most of it was so explicit I halfway expected her to lift her dress and provide visual aid. I'm so glad she didn't. This woman has a lot to say about the v-word and she wants you to know it. I am not an uninformed man about the human body. I agree that people need not be ashamed about their bodies and how they work. Miss Ensler hammers you over the head with the fact that people are basically ignorant about the female sex organs and their vaginas are angry about this. Miss Ensler must have the angriest vagina on the planet. Basic information is doled out here but mostly I found her ramblings tiresome and needlessly on the exploitive side. This is not an educational DVD but a launching pad for some of the most intimate and graphic musings on the female anatomy there is outside of a porn film. Experience this performance if you must but be aware it's not a comedy routine and it's not enlightening in any way except to sit and drop your jaw at how a woman felt compelled to take this subject and wipe your face with it. Enough said.
