4.0 out of 5 stars Andy's stock will rise., Oct 30 2003

This review is from: Five Star Motel (Audio CD)
Andy Stochansky rocked the house in his performance at St. Ambrose University. Upon taking the stage the crowd was a little reserved and not sure what to expect. Yet, as soon as Andy strummed his first cord and began to sing everyone was taken back. The song which stood out the most to me was "22 Steps" a nice melody with lyrics that would impress even the most weathered listener. Andy put on a great set, and was met with loud clapping and cheering from the crowd. Once his set was over I talked to Andy about "Five Star Motel" and he was a really nice guy. So for all you music lovers check out Andy his voice reminds me of Bono with a lisp.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong Pop Rock, May 23 2003

As an Ani fan I was not sure what to expect when I picked this CD up. At first I was surprised (disappointed?) at what a commercial sound it seemed to have - THEN I listened a little more. This is a very good CD. The songs are lyrically very strong, 22 Steps is my favorite. Many reviewers have commented on his voice, some friends have asked Is that Bono? New U2? No this is not a U2 album! Frankly, Andy Stochansky has his own intelligent voice and a wonderfully accessible sound. A very enjoyable album.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm hooked, April 29 2003

I just saw Andy perform live this past weekend, and was blown out of the water! I had heard Ani mention Mr. Stochansky on "Living in Clip" and was interested to see what he was putting out now. After the show I got to talk to Andy and he signed my CD, and now I really couldn't take it out of my CD player if I wanted to. I highly recommend this album, especially "Here nor There," "22 Steps," and "Everest." The music is refreshing, positive, calming, and contemplative all at the same time. And I always have more respect for people who write and play their own stuff, and Mr. Stochansky is a genius in this department. I am also impressed with his ability to step out of his own point of view, and write lyrics from another perspective besides his own. His lyrics are very inspiring.

Go buy this CD!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives Up To It's 5-Star Name, April 24 2003

The former Ani DiFranco drummer, Andy Stochansky, has created something that REAL music lovers can appreciate. With melodic vocals that will remind you of Radiohead, U2, and Jeff Buckley (at times) coupled with melifluous arrangements, "5 Star Motel" is a MUST for anyone looking for something to keep in their CD player for a LOOOOONG time.

4.0 out of 5 stars a major "elliott", Dec 26 2002
This review is from: Five Star Motel (Audio CD)
This record is definately for fans of Elliott, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead (pre - "OK Computer"), and U2. Stochansky has an amazing voice, and while the guitar playing may not be the most technically proficient, it suits this style very well. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Andy shows his stuff, Nov 14 2002
This review is from: Five Star Motel (Audio CD)
So I'm passing through my local record store a couple months ago, and under the heading "Sounds From the Underground," I find a new record by Andy Stochansky. I knew he'd done a couple solo records since leaving Ani DiFranco's band a few years back, and try as I might, I couldn't find either of them. Then I see this sitting in front of me for pretty cheap, so I figured, "what the hell." It was a major impulse buy.

I do not regret it at all. Indeed, it's probably the best album I've bought in a long time. I'm so glad Andy got out from behind the drum kit and showed his stuff. Don't get me wrong, I've been a follower of Ani DiFranco for years and thoroughly enjoyed his work with her, including his clever banter on Ani's live "Living in Clip" album. Anyway...

When I first heard the album, I couldn't believe how much he sounds like Thom Yorke from Radiohead. After repeated listens I've noticed the differences in the two voices. My favorite songs are "Stutter," "Wonderful (It's Superman)," "22 Steps," "Miss USA," and "Mavis Said..." I know that's a lot of favorites for one album, but that's just the kind of album this is. He has a great voice, he writes incredible lyrics, he plays four or five different instruments, the arrangements of the songs are very original. What more can I say? Buy this album now.
