5.0 out of 5 stars Don't give much creedence to Amazon's Editorial Review...
I won't bore everyone with another description of this movie -- please read other positive reviews for that. This review is more of a defense against the Editorial Review written by Tom Keogh. It's a shame that his remarks are given primary visibility to any potential customers looking for a fantastic comedy that, in my and many other opinions, stands the test of time...

2.0 out of 5 stars I saw this movie in theatres once... ONCE!
I went to see this with m'pops at the local mall's mini-multiplex back in the day. Sadly, we were in for a rather rude- and stunningly stupid- awakening. This roll of wall-to-wall lameness is one of the dumbest and most unfunny attempts at parody I've ever had the misfortune of viewing! Well, aside form 'Spy Hard', anyway. The only saving grace: mob overlord Maroni's...

4.0 out of 5 stars Tom Keogh needs a humourectomy, Feb 11 2006

This is a wonderful film. The subtle humour is omnipresent. I suppose if the humour had been over-the-top Mr. Keogh would have loved it. Everything about this comedy is low-key which is why I loved it. It's nice to be able to "get it" without being hit over the head for a change. The dialogue is great, the cast is perfect. The lines spoken by the "priest" who springs Johnny from prison are just too funny. Many scenes had me in stitches. Before you think I'm a retard, I'm a big fan of British humour so I know subtlety. If you don't want to take a chance, rent it. You won't regret it. Unless you're Tom Keogh!

I won't bore everyone with another description of this movie -- please read other positive reviews for that. This review is more of a defense against the Editorial Review written by Tom Keogh. It's a shame that his remarks are given primary visibility to any potential customers looking for a fantastic comedy that, in my and many other opinions, stands the test of time. I recently re-watched this movie, for about the 7th time, as it was being re-run on one of the premium channels. As I was laughing from-my-gut at the same one-liners and scenarios I almost know-by-heart, I realized that this was definitely a film to add to my DVD library. If you are a prospective buyer that has never seen this movie, and you enjoy comedies in the vain of Mel Brooks, Monty Python, and "Amazon Women on the Moon", I can almost guarantee that you will LOVE this film. It's one Michael Keaton's best comedic works -- as good or better than "Night Shift", but in a totally different way -- and I couldn't disagree more with Tom Keogh's remarks...

One of the funniest films you will every see. Keaton is superb, and the rest of the cast ain't bad, either! Even the music soundtrack is right on the mark. I've seen it many times and look forward to many more.

I half to agree with the other reviewers. This movie was great and very well done. The way to find a good movie is to read the critics and if they don't like the movie, you can bet you'll love it. Everyone in this movie did a great job!!

4.0 out of 5 stars extremely overlooked, May 31 2004
This review is from: Johnny Dangerously (Widescreen) (DVD)
i have to admit that all a comedy needs to do for me is make me laugh. it doesnt have to be a great story or be completely dedicated to its subject matter as in a normal film. most comedys have a thinly veiled story with numerous jokes to keep the audience laughing and Johnny dangerously is one of those films. although the pinnacle of the film is the abuse of Roman Marone's foreign accent, there are so many other great jokes here. the acting is bad, and probably intentional since the fourth wall seems to be nonexistant and well thought out jokes make you laugh without thinking. they take advantage of their surroundings and the time frame of the film for some really hilarious moments. this may not be comedy royalty but its ten times funnier than some other spoofs by the Wayans Brothers (with the exception of Im Gonna Get you Sucka) or even the Hot Shots series.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the all time best comedies of all time!, Mar 14 2004
This review is from: Johnny Dangerously (Widescreen) (DVD)
Sometimes the critics need to let go of their intellectual snobbery and just go with comedic timing. The entire cast of this film works well together, the jokes are funny and some people have been using quotes from this movie for twenty years. That's got to count for something.

So go out and buy this movie, you farging iceholes.

I can't believe the bad review. My old VHS tape of this movie is so worn out that the color is blurred. My friends that have seen this movie and I still quote Roman Marone to this day. Other people think we are crazy. I can't believe the number of people that have never heard of this movie. I am not going to explain the movie because it has been explained by other reviewers. Oh, Oh, remember the part when Tommy's car lost it's brakes and the radio was playing faster with the speed and he rolled down the hill and...you will have to see. Ooooh Myy God!

I don't know who reviewed this movie for Amazon, but they're WAY off the mark... get a sense of humor!
This movie was hilarious when it came out, and it's just as funny now. Hey, earth to reviewer! It's SUPPOSED to be silly! It's not a biting satire of '30s gangster movies, it's a slapstick comedy that happens to be set in the '30s gangster culture.
If you haven't seen this movie, you need to. Those of you who have seen it know it's great (just check out the 32 reviews below with a 4.5 star average rating).

4.0 out of 5 stars Fargin' Hillarious!, Aug 31 2003

Scott Leopold "Scott Leopold" (Dayton, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Johnny Dangerously (Widescreen) (DVD)
Johnny Dangerously still holds up well as one of the best comedies of the early to mid 80's. Starring Michael Keaton in perhaps his greatest comedic role, this is the story of gangster Johnny Dangerously. Johnny's basically a good guy who finds himself forced into a life of crime in order to pay to treat his mother's increasingly bizarre ailments. Marilu Henner is great as Johnny's love interest, Lil, while Peter Boyle is hilarious as mob boss Jocko Dundee. Griffin Dunne plays Johnny's naieve, optimistic brother, who follows a different path to the district attorney's office, and Joe Piscopo is at his funniest as rival gangster, Danny Vermin. All in all, this is a hilarious send-up of the classic gangster genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good Movie, Jun 24 2003
By

This review is from: Johnny Dangerously (VHS Tape)
That guy that played Batman is a pet shop owner. One day a kid comes in to try and steal a puppy, only he doesn't make it out of the store, and is subjected to cruel and inhumane torture... listening to the petshop owner (Michael Keaton) reminisce on his own childhood, and how he went from mild mannered paper boy, to notorious gangster Johnny Dangerously. Of course as he reminisces, the movie flashes back to the era, which is set in the days of Al Capone. This movie has really great dialogue. Whoever directed, wrote, and produced this film, did a good job. I love it, and when I get enough money I plan to buy it. I would not recommend it for the whole family, unless of course you are all over 18 or very liberal. It has brief nudity, action, suspense, adult language, and sexual innuendo. If you like comedies like Blazing Saddles, Naked Gun, or Scary Movie, you'll more than likely love this movie as well. It's a first class comedy in my book.
