4.0 out of 5 stars hallmark -bring a good story too life.
As far as T.v movies go this is a 3.5 star family fun movie. It's sort of a mix of,Plantet of the Apes(tv) Jurrassic Park,Land of the Lost (t.v if you remember those reruns or first runs). With a bit of disney live action story telling on the side. The fx is a match for JP- the Charecter Zippo is a show stealer.

3.0 out of 5 stars for the dinosaur in us all
Dinotopia will not impress you with its script and acting. In fact, these are the major points that hinder the movie. But if you are willing to look past such and enjoy the story for what it's worth, Dinotopia comes as a recommened 4 hours. I've always been a stickler for fantasy and adventure, and am even more biased towards any movie that has dinosaurs in it, so here I...

When two boys, crash into the sea :Via there small private plain. They find themselves on a island that time forgot.Where dinosaurse and humans live in harmony.Although it appears in some cases the dinos are incharge. While looking for a way home the boys must adabt too this strange newlifestyle in the process they become involed in aiding in the saving of Dinotopia-the Sun Stones(gems)that power the city and protect it from Carnovors is failing all over the island.New ones must be found. The humans &Dinos are so caught up in tradition that they are ready too let there world die.So its up too the boys ,Zippo ,the mayors daughter and a wicked shop keeper too save Dinotopia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for little kids, including the one in us, Nov 25 2002
This review is from: Dinotopia (Full Screen) (DVD)
I could go on how horrible the script was, starting with the plot holes (e.g. their plane crashes in the ocean in the middle of a hurricane, they swim the rest of the night and then walk out of the surf the next morning like they just did a slow lap around the track). The dialogue is a joke. The characters are one-dimensional, predictable and stereotypical. Perhaps the only thing worse than the script is the acting. And perhaps the only thing worse than the acting is the directing.

Having said all that, however, the bottom line is my younger kids thoroughly enjoyed it. And when I could turn off my adult critic and watch it with the eyes of an eight-year old I enjoyed it too. And that's who it's for. Eight to ten year olds (not necessarily in a chronological sense).

The truth is that the special effects are quite good -- the true star of the show. And the Dinotopia setting, after all is said and done, is enchanting. Except for one stupid scene where the lead male swims naked (apparently) with the lead female the movie is absolutely clean. That makes a four-starrer in my book, despite everything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you critics say F-A-N-T-A-S-Y?, Dec 29 2003

Jeeezzz...

Some of you are looking for logical plot endings, complex characters, and great dialog.

This movie is meant to ENTERTAIN... This is not meant to be a realistic dinosaur movie -- it's FANTASY so cut it some slack.

By the way, I thought the sets were awesome -- made me want to visit Waterfall City. And the acting wasn't that bad either.

I think that this is an entertaining, enthralling story with a few unanswered questions. Without a doubt, it has some spectacular computer graphics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertainment, Jun 18 2010
This review is from: Dinotopia (Full Screen) (DVD)
I enjoyed this movie and I happen to be an adult. Admitedly I could probably watch almost any family movie with a good review. I will agree that the movie lacked some solid logic and amazing actors, but it was an entertaining watch nontheless. The actress inside me says that the movie couldn't have chosen worse people to play the parts, but I did find that in the end they did a good enough job to keep me satisfied.
I will warn those looking for a movie that is scientifically correct that this isn't it. If you want to get facts on dinosaurs then look somewhere else. These dinos are anything but correct that way.
I would recomend this tale for children and the young at heart. If you don't qualify keep your distance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Um, Roar??, Jan 21 2004
This review is from: Dinotopia (Full Screen) (DVD)
I wasn't expecting to be blown away by this movie, but I was hoping that it might exceed my poor expectations. It didn't. I think Rex from Pixar's 'Toy Story' was a more beleivable dinosaur, and the point of the story was....well, lame. Those lame sun rocks or whatever they were weren't explained very well as to WHY the kept the carnivourous dinosaurs away, but the other ones weren't bothered by them. And why could some of the Dinosaurs talk while the others just carried people around?

The only thing I liked about this movie was that I at least got some eye candy, those brothers were pretty cute. At least my kid brother liked it.
I can't believe they even came up with the idea to make a series out of this....I thought the never ending 'Land Before Time' videos were bad...but this is live action and computer animated. Hopefully ABC will fire whoever keeps coming up with these stupid movies.

But if you are willing to look past such and enjoy the story for what it's worth, Dinotopia comes as a recommened 4 hours. I've always been a stickler for fantasy and adventure, and am even more biased towards any movie that has dinosaurs in it, so here I was able to appreciate the world being represented (if even rather poorly). Of course, if this isn't your cup of tea, know that Dinotopia includes flashy special effects. The dinosaurs, while not up to par with the BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs, are well-animated, and believable enough to get the job done. Don't be fooled by what this movie can't do, because what it can do may just as well be enough.

2.0 out of 5 stars so much wasted beauty, Dec 14 2003
By
This review is from: Dinotopia (Full Screen) (DVD)
This story was produced with every possible visual refinement, and looks splendid. It bombed. So it was re-shot with other actors. Idiots. The problem was not with the actors, who went from competent to extremely good, and all looked great (even Hollywood cannot improve, for female pulchritude, on Alice Krige and Katie Carr - who is so beautiful that she makes you wish to hug and kiss her just for being there); it was with the totally cretinous story, in which a ridiculously facile Communist utopia shades off into eco-new-age PC: "we don't approve of violence in Dinotopia" - gimme a break! What is more, the story is astonishingly old-fashioned - it reads like a rip-off of E.R. Burroughs or the more exotic bits of Conan Doyle If you want an encyclopedia of what NOT to do with a story, you could do worse than make a thorough study of this. Meanwhile, it is sad that the desire of the producers to cover their arses for this apalling miscalculation has probably blighted the careers of most of the protagonists of the first series. The problem is that people who would think that this was a story worth shooting would probably not know decent writing if it bit their whole leg off.
