5.0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the most haunting soundtrack ever...
I remember seeing the movie for the first time, how it superbly impressed me. The images and acting was top notch, the story was really great and the style and setting was so wonderful...but one thing beat all the rest. The Music. If I`d to vote for the most beautiful soundtracks ever, this would be my vote.

27 tracks. What are the odds. You figure half would be good or great. I found only 2 tracks that were good. Quantity over quality? More tracks does not equal better soundtrack. 2 for 27 is baaaaddddd! Bottom line... not a very great soundtrack.

Great movie though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the most haunting soundtrack ever..., Feb 19 2003

I remember seeing the movie for the first time, how it superbly impressed me. The images and acting was top notch, the story was really great and the style and setting was so wonderful...but one thing beat all the rest. The Music. If I`d to vote for the most beautiful soundtracks ever, this would be my vote.

Thomas Newman, known for works on American Beauty....has done a quite different soundtrack now. Its not your ordinary symphonyorchestra, it sounds more...personal. Haunting pianos and sad strings fill the air on the slower pieces, while unusual sounds and instruments are used for the more actionfilled songs. Its no surprise that the slow and quiet songs are my favorite, "The Farm" being the ABSOLUTELY best song on the album. The melody itself is not very varied, but it is so wonderful and relaxing, just like the time they had on the farm. The way it goes from a deep major to a sad higher tone never fails to wake up all my memories from the movie, and I just cant stop listening to it. Its beautiful. Simply.

Of course there are several incredible songs there. The title song Road to Perdition is stunning! Both sad, mystical but yet filled with a little hope. Meet Maguire is the very strange, very spooky and a bit jazzy. Its jawbreaking. Then we have other wonderful pieces like "Grave Drive", "Ghosts", "Just the Feller", "Rock Island, 1931" and "Cathedral". They are all so great, its hard to describe it. This album is an obvious buy if you loved the movie, and even if you havent seen it, you will be so amazed and taken away by its magical sound, that you`ll end up next with the upcoming Road to Perdition DVD..

I`d say, that this soundtrack is one of the best ever. Compare it to whatever you like, but this one wins with what counts the most.....soul.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exellent orchestrated compilation, Mar 25 2009

I prefer to put this on when alone to avoid distractions while savouring the exceptional music quality. Use of some less common instruments add a uniqueness to this compilation (could it be the uilleann pipes?? or the Irish bouzouki?? or perhaps the hurdy-gurdy??). Only 3 tracks do not appeal to me personally (a vocal number and 30's "flapper" music - if I can refer to it as such) but rest assured, there are plenty of remaining tracks that bring out the best of this soundtrack. A worthy consideration for those who enjoy fine music.

I've probably seen this movie 6 times, not only because of the movie it self, but for the sound track, every scene in this movie has it's own interpretation of the sound track, both the sound track and the scene make you cry, i got to the point that when i listen to the Audio CD, i visualize the movie for that specific movie scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars A far cry from his "Revenge of the Nerds" soundtrack., Jan 20 2004

After having this over a year, I still find myself coming back to this one. Haunting and melodic, it invokes images from the movie but is able to set itself apart to be something different. I play this in my cubicle at work and more than once someone has asked me what it was and if they could borrow it for the day. It's one of the few soundtracks that does not continually play a variation on the same theme, like "Braveheart" or "Last of the Mohicans". Thomas Newman keeps getting better and better. He is one of the few instantly recognizable composers by using more string and woodwind than brass. A definite must-have for soundtrack collectors.

From simple, beautiful melodies to gorgeously lush - and sometimes otherworldly - orchestrations, this is a work of amazing power. Stunningly evocative, it's an aural pipeline directly to the seat of your emotions. This CD is a true gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Soundtrack, Nov 26 2003
By
This review is from: Road To Perdition (Audio CD)
If you are a 'soundtrack junkie' like me, then you will not want to be without this one. I spend a good part of my time hunting for great soundtracks that I can listen to while I read or study. This is one of the better ones I have a found in a long time.

There are several features that set this soundtrack apart from others that I have collected:

First, it has a lot of music. Many soundtracks have little music and the songs are short, making the soundtrack even shorter since the selection is slim as well.

Second, it has a good variety of music. I have purchased or heard soundtracks where there is one song used but played or arranged a dozen different ways. That gets boring quite fast.

Third, (and this is merely a personal preference of my own), the songs are emotional and moving. Many of the these songs are very emotional, soothing, or have a cajoling effect.

Having collected many different soundtracks over the years, I can safely say that this one is a very nice addition to my collection. By the way, especially good tracks on this collection are, 2 - "Wake;" 13 - "The Farm;" 16 - "A Blind Eye;" 22 - "Cathedral" (a scene in the movie which convinced me to get the soundtrack), and 26 - "Road to Perdition."

Other suggested soundtracks - "My Dog Skip;" and "A Map of the World" (which is probably my all time favorite).

Wow. This score is incredible. I could listen to it endlessly. Especially track 7 "The Road to Chicago". For such a violent movie, the music is haunting and beautiful. Close your eyes and imagine. Where it will take you is a personal journey.

Because of the incredible beauty of this music, I have ordered other CD's from Thomas Newman (without so much as a listen in advance) and have not been disappointed. The Horse Whisperer has a similar quality. Amazing and beautiful - you won't tire of listening again and again.
