Don't get me wrong, this move is a masterpiece in it's every aspects. Also the video and sound quality is there.

The problem is that the movie has English subtitles burn-in and I wish I would've known that before making this purchase. If you're looking for the clean french version of this movie, don't get the alliance release of it because you won't be able to...

How hard would it have been to get the option to turn them on or off ?

4.0 out of 5 stars fun, quirky, colorful, whimsical, stylish..., April 30 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Amelie [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
You will probably either enjoy this film or dislike it. Probably no in-between. It is neither realistic nor typical comedy. It's an adult fairy tale. It resembles "The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" in a way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jeunet's sense of humor is so refreshing, Feb 29 2012

Amelie (2001)
Comedy, Fantasy, Romance
122 minutes, French Language
Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Starring Audrey Tautou and Mathieu Kassovitz

Several of my favorite directors produce movies which have a distinct feel, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet is one of them. He can take the darkest topics and infuse them with his own brand of humor. Amelie is not one of his darker films, but it feels like part of his familiar world.

The star of Amelie is Audrey Tautou and she shines in the role. The movie isn't serious at all and is filled with amusing stories and delivered in a whimsical way. We are introduced to the characters by a narrator who tells us their likes and dislikes. I love the use of narration when it's done well.

Amelie is a young woman who accidentally discovers a box of childhood treasures left hidden in her apartment by a previous tenant. She decides to track him down to return it and resolves to do similar good deeds if the outcome is favorable. She's not completely good though. One person in particular annoys her so she decides to play a few pranks to teach him a lesson.

The movie has plenty of mystery and eventually turns into an unconventional romance. The color scheme places an emphasis on red and green and the world seems surreal. The setting is Paris, but this isn't the Paris that I know from my visits.

Audrey Tautou is an incredible actress. She can convey a lot of emotion without saying a word. Her face is one of the most expressive that I have seen. If you have only seen her in The Da Vinci Code, Amelie is a great chance to see her act in her native language.

I know people who would avoid seeing Amelie because it's in French and it's a romance. That would be a mistake. The movie is a pure delight and has a unique style. It won't appeal to everyone, but those who like it will really love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and delicious hearty movie, Dec 15 2007

This movie really touches the heart. It is hard not to walk away with a smile on your face. No wonder it was nominated for 5 Academy Awards. It is a romance but also a comedy and so much more. The introduction to the key character is unique and that playfulness continues throughout the movie. Likewise the musical score is delightful and very French and compliments the movie nicely. So yes, go out and rent this movie. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars This movie managed to melt even my hardened heart...., Nov 24 2003
This review is from: Amélie (DVD)
I watched this movie by accident. I was killing time. Soon, I found myself riveted to the movie.
It is a beautiful and sweet story. The story made me feel like a 14 year old falling in love. I am not going to go over the plot - I am going to talk about feelings. I felt light - as if a weight had been taken off my shoulders. My eyes got misty. That hasn't happened for the last 20 years. I was left with a smile and I went to sleep peacefully. This is a MUST WATCH!!

5.0 out of 5 stars even the mundane contains magic, Mar 3 2009

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a master of his craft--pure and simple. His ability to make even the most mundane situations and twist and turn them into something magical is beyond fantastic.

And if this movie doesn't want you to hop on a plane and go to Montmartre in Paris to experience this world of Amelie, then there is no hope for you.

As far as the DVD, it's well worth it for the extras (and fret not, most of the stuff is in English). The "Look of Amelie" shows how precise and prepared the director was and the cinematographer actually steals the show with his explanation of various shots and scenes. There is more--funny outtakes, screen tests (hey, why don't more DVDs thorw those on?), a couple of Q&A's with the cast and crew as well as a nice face-to-face with Jeunet himself.

The entire package is well worth having.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful!, July 25 2002
By
This review is from: Amélie (DVD)
With a delightfully playful exterior and subtle inner wisdom, Amélie reveals a world within the world of our perceptions, where not everything absolutely must be as it seems, if only you take a moment to peel away the surface layers of life’s hidden fruits and let the pulp rain in droplets onto your tongue.

A magical composition of stories within a story, Amélie challenges us through gentle suggestion and colorful detail to think past the ordinary, to see the world through our mind’s eye and, as Amelie does herself, to notice the things nobody else does. Vibrant, fascinating and compelling characters encourage us to see past the outer weave of personality and peek inside, where everyone has a little lost soul inside, waiting to be appreciated.

Most of all, perhaps, this story reminds us that a world of inspiration is often as close as our own backyard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amélie plucks heartstrings and strikes artistic gold, Aug 15 2009
This review is from: Amélie (DVD)
Amélie is a film demands to be seen more than once.
The first time around you fall in love with its story and the artistic eccentricities.
The second time, details make more sense and the puzzle pieces fall together better than they did the first time.
The third time, with a keen eye and ear, you start to notice little visual symbols and musical cues that hold the movie together and make it a legitimately artistic film--and quite a bit more.
It is fundamentally a love story, cute, but which offers so much more than the average Hollywood picture so that the senses are always dazzled. There is magic here--magic that is convincing and heartfelt. There is humour. There is originality. There is also character. Amélie is a film that deserves a spot in your movie collection.
